Got to agree with you, it was bulletproof. I loved mine and it never missed a beat. I only sold the car because it has some accident damage and was gutted to lose it. It was the last fantastic Audi VW engine IMO before the world went eco friendly and everything is run by computers and gadgets.

If you're interested in a K04 and you already have a K03s keep looking. If you somehow feel the desire for more power then go big turbo. The reality is most people and I can't stress it enough don't need anything more than a tuned K03s with full supported boltons. A fwd car like a vdub with a huge low tq curve just waste energy spinning your tires in the first two gears. There's nothing wrong with a working N75 and unless you're a mechanical engineer the so called performance N75 is the same as the one in your dub. It simply has the screw turned full left inviting spikes and other shenanigans that kill your turbo and or motor, just leave certain things alone. The best information is what applies to how you're going to drive your car decide wisely it's your money, your license and always your life that's at stake.

I love my 2004 VW Passat GL Wagon. It has the not as favorited AWM 1.8T, 5-Speed Manual. USA variant. It has almost 230k on it, but it doesn't burn a lick of oil between changes. Ever since it came into the family we have kept up with oil changes religiously as well as the appropriate belt and water pump replacements as well as kept an eye on the pcv system and common steering issues that accure with the multi-link suspension design. I'm going to be bringing it out again this year to VolksFest in Milwaukee. It is shaping up to be a great year for the ride after putting the work I've done, restoring it, being in my hands after getting it from my X-wife. Such a reliable motor not causing much of a fuss after the 18 years of its life being in and through the brutal Wisconsin winters.

I own an AUQ in a 2002 Leon cupra and have done over 40k miles on a ko4 no problems! People go on about the BAM but a stage two AUQ with a KO4 turbo you can reliably push 260BPH, The BAM engine has no secondary air meaning the moment you change anything from the original you’ll have to put a resistor across the plug, as BAM engines do not have that part most people think not having to blank anything off is great, but the reality is that although a hassle having to blank off here and there on the AUQ, it makes it’s 19mm rods at 260BPH almost indestructible while the BAM’s 20mm rods at 260 wouldn’t last due to not having that part, even with the resistor across the plug, hence why the Cupra r’s are not very valuable, while the only reason the AUQ isn’t valuable is due to a name stamped on a bumper. The fact is, the AUQ is the better engine and most don’t know it’s forged malhe, if the VW group intended for its customers to tune their r’s and rs cars they would of used there AUQs on there fancy named cars, BAM is only intended to be stock hence the reason why they decided to go with no secondary air. The AUQ discreetly placed in cupra and not Cupra r for example’, was INTENTIONAL! For those who have expert know how about mechanical engineering to keep tunes on the go and legal, it’s a legal mechanical loophole to keep tunes on the go and away from protesters! Your welcome!

That sounds like a real beast of an engine. Do you have any traction issues from that setup? Sounds amazing.
@sniperviperman64002 жыл бұрын
@@torquecars I only lose traction in the wet, in the dry wheelspin starting from 6000 rpm in 2'nd gear to 7500. It's quiet a heavy car so the power is good handling. I don't remember they sold the Sharan in the US. Of course I have upgraded brakes, single mass light flywheel with upgraded clutch, replaced the tiny stock intercooler with a much bigger version. Deleted all the EGR, 2'nd airpump and other obsolete engine junk. Peak boost is 1.7bar / 24.6 psi. 560cc injectors, R8 3.0T red top coils. The stock crankcase has been balanced as well, all new race bearings for better oil flow. The car has a much stronger diesel gearbox with upgraded driveshafts to handle more torque. Upgraded duel inlet and outlet springs and race valves. upgraded cam followers ARP heads and bolts, a stronger water and oil pump. Race distribution belt to handle the torque. catch can without venting to air, DW 65V drop in fuel pomp. ST coil overs back and front and probably whole lot more . you can check my channel with the 1'st engine start after new build and a few dyno sessions.

Turbo inlet with a turbo silicone breather kit and fmic with forged diverter valve and new n75 along with a down pipe are on my list so I can remap it with some decent results. I plan on a tranny rebuild and clutch way before the map though. One thing I can say is the ko3s feels great comes on fast and hard but definitely feels like it's being choked up a lot by the stock inlet and outlet (down pipe) side of things getting to the upper rpm range. Low end torque is great though for daily driving around the city.

It depends on what you need, personally I avoid those with a DPF as I do lots of short journeys. The TSi is better suited to me and I like the wide power band but my 2.0TDi pulled like a train and gave great fuel economy. With the same power the TSi will generally win in a race but the TDI running costs are generally lower and more reliable.

Great video, but a bit confused about the injectors discussed around 27 minutes. I have an APX engine, K04 turbo, 2000 Audi TT quattro 225bhp/165kw. I'm thinking of a remap. Your video says that the APX usually have the Bosch 315cc injectors, but also says the K04 turbo models typically had 386cc injectors. How do I tell what my engine is fitted with, before I get the larger injectors? Thanks.
@torquecars2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is extremely confusing. Different cars from the VAG group in different regions met different specs and some years had other parts thrown in. Understandably the info online is very contradictory and I rewrote this script quite a number of times but this still slipped through :( ! Any injector quoted capacity on these is generally - or + 28ccm at 3 bar. The rail pressure has a bearing on how much an injector delivers so raising the rail pressure will extract more, and a worn engine may report much lower when measured. From what I can find your 225HP APX with a K04 used 06A906031J with an average flow as per the listing in ETKA and ELSA : 358cc so between 330cc and 386cc. Your local dealer should be able to confirm your part number based on region year and model spec.

Hi, nice video , I have a question, if I install a solid mass clutch instead the floated bi mass clutch could it generate more vibration or any issues? Audi a3 1.8T 8L
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the support and encouragement my friend. You will get more vibration, but these engines are fairly smooth and the transmissions are fairly strong. Ask around and see what feedback you get from the many forums, personally I would go for it but not too light on a road car.

I recently got a Leon 20v cupra and it’s solid but there’s an engine light. When I scanned it it said the MAF signal is too high. Do you think cleaning out the maf will help or would you replace it? It’s at 120k miles

Had I 04 passat 4mo with a decent amount of work, stage 2 ra4 clutch conversion, ko4, 550cc injectors, 5 bar fpr, fmic, stage 2 tune with a local company. Full evap delete and and cold air intake with a box to cover the heat from the turbo and downpipe. Man she was mean sleeper that's for sure. But sadly trying to find massive boost leak led to a bad rear main seal. Before I could get to fixing it I made the stupid decision to race a car worker and through a hard misfire in 4th gear at 22psi and blew the motor. Just picked up a bone stock 03 passat with low miles but sadly it's fwd so I'm limited on how much power I can put to the wheels this time around

you talking about the conrods the block it's over 1000 horsepower rods 400 Newton metres is the max then it will bend
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
I am actually talking about the "entire engine block assembly" for ALL 1.8T engines but I had to go with the weakest common denominator for what is a very general introduction guide to tuning these engines, otherwise people will complain that my advice broke their engine or they didn't achieve the power I told them to expect. (NB: We include Seat and Skoda brand cars with this engine here in the Uk also.) Most will see power far above 350hp on this amazing engine without any problems at all usually around 500-600hp in my experience. I have a few reports from our members of issues around 400hp but these seem to be the exception rather than the rule and when I look into it there were other factors involved, typically poor tunes or low quality parts. I do tend towards a cautious approach to upgrades, so if your target is 350 don't worry strengthening anything, if you are going higher you need to do your research carefully especially on the parts fitted inside your block. I am working on some more in depth guides to these engines especially since there is more data and information for me to work from now. Regionally there are quite a few differences. Your comments and pointers will certainly be taken into account in the next video and I thank you sincerely for taking the time to pass this on to me.

I'll be dropping a video on the TT very soon and I'll make sure I cover the 225. The Mk1 was a lovely car, probably one of the last fantastic Audi sports cars before they went emissions compliant crazy.

A simple remap/tune will do quite a lot for a relatively small outlay, after that you are looking at turbo upgrades and turbo swaps, the K03s is a pretty good cheap upgrade from the K03 if it doesn't have this already in there or a K04 but this is probably a bit too extreme for you if you want to keep it simple.

I have a 1999 Audi TT mk1 AJQ engine with a K03 turbo. I want to upgrade the turbo. Will a K04 be a direct fit?? Thank you! Also from my understanding, I'll also need a FMIC, good turbo oil lines, wastegate, CAI, BOV, larger fuel injectors, upgraded fuel rail and a wide-band O2 sensor. Also I'm planning to get a stage 2 remap with REVO. Am I missing anything? Thanks again
@torquecars2 жыл бұрын
K03 to K04 swaps are quite popular but beware there are subtly different versions of the K04. So an early K04 will usually bolt straight on to replace an early K03. On some K04 swaps you might need to relocate some of the turbo ancillaries. Transverse and longitudinal engines had different turbo pipework and layouts. Your list seems pretty good to me but the air intake MAP/MAF will probably need an upgrade to. Hope that helps and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable that me on this will spot your question and add their experiences and tips.

Check out the K04-001. It’s apparently the K03 with 04 internals and like the man says bolts right onto the og manifold. Never met anyone yet who can say they did this successfully though. Won’t be an off the shelf tune as the cars they came in were very low power.

Hey there brother, how's it going? Your description in clean and the video is good thank you for taking your time to compose the information. I drive a Audi TT 1.8T Quattro 225 and I'm now getting a new exhaust and I'm thinking about putting a 3inch on the downpipe and a slightly smaller exhaust by the midpipe then keeping the back box and exhaust tips stock what do you think about that?
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
They are great options as long as you can avoid steps in the pipe and have gradual changes it should flow nicely it is the cats on the early ones that are quite restrictive, I see we have quite a few TT owners on here, so I must put together a guide for this great car.
