Porto has SO many amazing things you can do and is one of our favorite cities in Portugal. On this trip, we're only passing through Porto to the rest of Portugal. It got us wondering, how would we spend one day if we were on a budget? Get ready for some walking! We'll see some incredible azulejos (blue & white tiles), try the delicious Pastel da Nata, enter the Harry Potter bookstore, climb the Clerigos Tower (as a splurge option) and of course we'll try some Port. Yes, there's room in the budget for some port tasting!
The Casa da Guitarra has excellent Fado concerts most nights. They also have a wide selection of traditional stringed instruments and will be happy to tell you more about traditional music in Portugal. The guitarrista seen in the video is Alfredo Teixeira. He and his brother Serafim will be happy to help. Alfredo also builds Portuguese guitars by hand as a luthier.

@@TalesFromOurPocket We have enjoyed France mostly just because it gives us easy access to all of Europe. We are not fans of the food here in southern France, nor the culture. We hope that Portugal will be more to our liking. Of course we will visit Porto and Braga, but our new home is close to Lisbon so we will explore there first.

I would like to add that visitors should not miss visiting Jardins do Palácio de Cristal. This is a wonderful park in Porto that has great views and is overflowing with beautiful foliage. Strolling along the walking paths, one is surrounded by peacocks. They won’t poop on your head.

When we went to Porto we stayed across the river in Cais De Gaia. There are several restaurants along the river including a small market with several stalls. There was one stall that served the Francesinha sandwich, which is something porto is known for. I have been craving that sandwich ever since.

I don't know if someone told you or if you found out while you were there but Vila Nova de Gaia is a completeley different city and county, so all the wine cellars are located in Gaia. Porto is only on the north bank of the Douro river. 😉

Do the Port cellars? wineries? ship to the states? We're heading to London after Porto and don't want to check luggage (thanks, EasyJet), but I'd love to have some as a souvenir. I've been to bodegas in Spain that will ship to your home country if you purchase after their tour/tasting.

Anything is possible for a cost! 😉 Yes, they will ship to your home, but it's not cheap because they wrap up everything *really* well for shipment. I believe they even insure it so if it breaks in transit, they'll send you a new one. It's worth asking about when you're there!

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. It was a good compromise on cost vs location and included free breakfast. We like AirB&Bs if we're staying for 4+ nights and the cleaning fee is reasonable and the place has recent good reviews. It's a great way to have more space and get a load of clothes washed. 😉 A great alternative is a managed apartment that can be booked through Agoda, hotels.com, or booking.com (just filter to apartments). Sometimes their cleaning fees are less! We've stayed in both types of accommodations in Porto, and both have their place. On this most recent trip, we redeemed some hotel points for our stay. 😊

We'll have 10 days exploring Beira and Alentejo regions with a car but we're not returning to the same place we pick it up so we'll need one of the bigger agencies. Any experience here? We have rented cars in Portugal a few times! I think they were always planned. My favorite website for one way rentals in Europe is Holiday Autos. They include one way drop off fees (which can be expensive, even within the same country!) up front within the price.
