/ @kb9vbrantennas ,
Welcome to an exciting new chapter in amateur radio technology! I'm thrilled to introduce the 'Fara-J' - a cutting-edge 2m-70cm ham radio antenna crafted from Faraday cloth.
Join me as I explore the potential of Faraday cloth as a viable alternative to traditional antenna materials. Inspired by the innovative use of Faraday materials discussed on channels like / @kb9vbrantennas , I've developed the 'Fara-J', which combines the durability and flexibility of fabric with the conductivity of Faraday tape.
Throughout this video, I take you through the step-by-step process of creating this unique antenna, from selecting the right fabric to sewing and fine-tuning the design for optimal performance. See it in action as I perform a series of radio checks, demonstrating its impressive range and clarity, even in challenging environments with significant obstructions.
But that's not all - the 'Fara-J' is not just about functionality; it's about convenience too. Weighing a mere 1.4 ounces, this antenna is ultra-portable, easy to ship, and can be effortlessly hoisted into position, making it an ideal choice for field operations or emergency communication setups.
For the DIY enthusiasts, I will share detailed plans on my Patreon, 'Ham Radio Rookie', so you can build your own 'Fara-J'. And for those who prefer a ready-made solution, stay tuned for updates on availability and pricing.
Don't forget to subscribe for more innovative ham radio solutions and insights. Together, let's push the boundaries of amateur radio technology!

Someone said in a comment that, " And you'd have a hard time trying to find the actual values anywhere, other than doing experiments like these, and measuring / calculating it for yourself." Actially, as you have shown, it is easy not hard to figure the correct length. With today's analyzers the process is easy and logical. You can lay out a length of the intended material. Physically measure its lenth. Then electrically measure its length. It will be a little shorer as you demonstrate. That means it will have a VF of some number like 95%. Ben thanks for the innovative videos. They are fun to watch and learn. 73, Jim W6LG

Thank you Jim! every time one of the people I respect and watch online, comes and comments on my videos it's a thrill. :) And yes you are correct on using the theVNA. I am struggling to find the actual VF of this stuff though as with all my (albeit likely wrong) calculations the VF is over 1 or over parity. This is s a physical impossibility so I need to really dive into the calculations and figure out what this actually is.

I think the difference has to do with the width of the tape. I used two tape measures to make an adjustable dipole. I discovered the length for the different bands was considerably shorter due to the width of the tape measures compared to wire. Great idea and video. KF6EWO

Gosh Ben, this is fun stuff... I love it. I wasn't aware of the Faraday tape or cloth. Thank you for sharing that!... I've been using copper and aluminium tape for my prototypes, and bridging the flex points where the foil would tear, with ground/shield braid and clamps, (which is also usable as an antenna)... The only thing I wondered about in this super neat design, is the effect of having coiled the coax into a loop at the base of the antenna. I know it was likely there just to keep things tidy, but I wondered if it may have reduced the performance of the system or forced the change to the antenna length, to accommodate the added inductance or choking effect at higher frequencies.... Love it! Keep them coming!
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie
@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie 9 ай бұрын
The coil in the shot is just a choke to keep any reflected signals from my radios. I have tried with a straight line and you are correct it performs better. I am just doing it out of a abundance of caution and because others recommend you do this.

Oh and using the cloth for hinge points does work. You will see in coming videos. I have found though that it kills bandwith on a slot antenna. However I have yet to try other configurations.

Is the cloth available locally in Calgary? In my application, I'm using a pop up MFJ non- conductive polycarbonate pole, and using the foil as the conductive outer layer. The goal with the larger diameter, is to broaden the band width at HF frequencies. I also needed the rigidity of the polycarbonate to withstand flex at high speeds and high winds when travelling. In it's travelling position, bent forward above the truck @ approx 12ft, if the antenna bounces while at speed, the variables of the antenna tuning change with the distance to ground and the vehicle. The pole is also very light, which makes a bunch of things better... However, I've managed to damage the whip with the actuator, while extending it at the stop, to check into the 40m net.... Question about the cloth... Could it be used as a replacement to fibber-glass cloth for a repair or build? ... Your timely post and my unfortunate accident, may the a solution in my next build. Makes sense that you would need more length. The way the material is constructed would inevitably mean it has a different velocity factor. And you'd have a hard time trying to find the actual values anywhere, other than doing experiments like these, and measuring / calculating it for yourself ;) Would be nice if somebody were to make tables of values like this for all sorts of conductive materials, so others who like to experiment have the data too ;) If you want a sturdy base material for these things; used seat belts are great for all sorts of hobby projects! When I replaced mine, I used the old ones to make belt-loops and screwed on 3D printed locking mechanism's for my radio's.

@@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie, while it could well be a velocity factor difference due to the odd material being used, I'd tend to think it could also be due to the much lower capacitance of the elements due to it being flat. Larger diameter radials always end up shorter due to capacitance increase of larger diameter elements, in particular out at the end where the voltage is the highest, and therefore the surface area has more affect. I'd like to see a signal strength comparison of this antenna against a copper cactus mounted at the same location.

Totally! Remember I’m the ‘Rookie’ still in my first year of ham so a lot of this testing equipment is out of my reach. But the local clubs are helping me with some of this. The capacitive concept you point out here definitely helps gel some of what I’m seeing with using this fabric though. Now can you help me understand why the thinner elements have the same bandwidth as the wider one does? Keep in mind the final thinner version length went from 1500mm to 1795mm. Copper foil versions that are narrow elements have very narrow bandwidth and wider have wide bandwidth but the length stays the same. So suffice to say your capacitive idea is likely the effect I need to be chasing not the velocity factor. There are some other new interesting effects that take place with yagi and slot versions using the faraday tape. But let’s focus on one thing here first and dive into others after we sort out this one first. I love your mind, curiosity and hypotheses on this! Your comments by far have me doubly curious over the physics of this antenna.

Not an amateur radio operator. However, I set up an 80 meter antenna for an amateur radio operator. 2060 centimetres on each leg of the horizontal dipole, set up 7 meters off the ground, the result looked like a giant laundry line. But, with 5 watts he was able to make a contact from Northern Saskatchewan to a ship off the coast of South Africa. I told him it would work. I used electric fence wire to make the enormous dipole. I really wanted to try the transmitter myself. But, I can only transmit into dummy loads when doing repairs, modifications, and changing from other radio services to amateur radio service bands.

@@VE6SFX_HamRadioRookie I made my antenna based on the plans, for some odd reason the SWR on 70cm was over 2, but it was 1.4 on the 1.25 meter band. I had to shorten a bit the long element and add a bit of tape to the short element. That helped with SWR and it was a lot of fun to tune since all it takes is to add tape or cut tape... really fun project. Thank you for sharing. Since I don't have a 3d pinter at home I cut a piece of white cutting board from the dolar store slipped the top end if the ribbon through a slit and use the contact cement to glue the ribbon to itself and the piece of plastic.

I make amplifiers, high current power supplies, manual antenna tuners, antennas, band pass filters, notch filters, AC hum filters, low pass filters, high pass, filters, I convert radios from one service, to different services, modify radios for improved function, programme radios, and install repeater networks, antennas, and complete stations. I likely know more than most amateur radio operators. I simply can not hold a conversation that does not make me sound synthetic, or mechanical. Thus, I just enjoy the technical aspect of the radio hobby and only transmit into dummy loads when servicing equipment. I grew up without amicable, nor amorous, interpersonal, social connections nor interactions. There is no procedural manual defining customs and protocols associated with successful social conversational exchanges. Bit there are plenty of technical transceiver schematics and diagrams. I've done this before with panels of fabric, small-gauge wire, and a sail needle to weave the wire into the fabric. Such a convenient way to make an antenna. They're pretty much indestructible too, they aren't fiddly or tangley like their ladder line counterparts. Your additional length most likely is velocity factor, good thinking. Most online j-pole calculators are meant for copper wire which has a pretty damn good velocity factor. Nickel isn't as good as copper and I'm sure the adhesive junctions aren't as conductive as the surrounding nickel.

Hey Ben, Another great idea 👍. Several thoughts… yes I think velocity factor probably plays into the tuning and resonance points. The faraday fabric will have what I’d call porosity (voids) that cause radio waves to act funny. RF loves flat wide spaces, it dislikes corner and curves. It tends to fly off a bit like lightning. Does the antenna still work oh yes but the RF just acts funny. I’m guessing by now you’ve heard of the Slim Jim antenna. Very similar to a J-Pole but with a second 1/2 wave element folded back (IN PHASE) with the original 1/2wave. There are many voices saying they are no better than a J-pole. How can you have 2x the square Cm of surface area for RF to radiate from and get equal results? I think not 😅 I digress… with your Fara-J , a Faraday- Slim might give your antenna more surface area to compensate for the porosity effect. I’ll post a second comment below 👇

I just received 6 plastic 8x10 sheets to create that folded box antenna you created with foam board. I got 1/8 inch pieces. I ordered the two extras "just in case" I screw something up. I ordered from Tapplastics. They cut them to size according to your order. And they're not expensive at all. Now that I have them, I think I could have paid a little less because I think 1/16 inch would work just as well.
