Great video. I have the Anytone AT-5888UV version of this radio. I bought it three years ago when I started getting licensed and it was my first mobile radio. Thank you for doing what you are doing. It is greatly appreciated.

Hey buddy, thanks for your kind words. I love this radio! It is REALLY well built - the menus are a little bit challenging but for the price - it's pretty unbeatable... audio is great, and the power out is awesome.

I need a rig for my truck. Lorene's truck has a dual band Icom and I pulled the Kenwood out of my truck to put in the camper. How dare you do a rig review. I just ordered this radio after seeing your video. Please, please be careful what you review next as I'm running out of radio funds. LOL Good job on the video and the review. 73's buddy

I used a PVC pipe like you did four years ago on an Icom IC-7100 control head and uploaded my install on KZbin and caught crap from a viewer that it was cheap and tacky. I guess I can’t win them all. Thanks for the video Simon!

Hi Simon, been away from your channel for some time. But back watching again. Best wishes to you and family and your dogs. Just replaced my old UHF/VHF antenna and coax. My old antenna has been up for 21 years so I thought it was time to replace it with a more efficient antenna. David M0DUU

@@thehamjazz Thanks Simon, the new antenna is a Diamond X200 with 12 meters of Ultraflex 10 from Messi and Paloni. Worked DX Commander Holy Farm, UK, 5/9 last weekend on 2 meters. He had a open day at his work place were he manufactures the DX Commander vertical antennas. The mobile radio looks like a nice piece of kit. The Chinese radio's are catching up with Japanese manufacturers.

Yeah, I have the Anytone AT-5888UV version. I like it very much. Some have tested it for spurious emissions and it's a bit dirty, but not enough to make me care.

Not only have I heard of it, I own a tri-band model. I know it isn’t a ham band in most of the world outside of region 2 but it also has the 1.25 meter band. Jack / KF5SGC. 73.

These Chinese rip off clones of Yaesu mobiles are cheaper than the real thing but it would be my guess that they have many cheap parts that are not specked out to handle the hot and cold temperatures that the real deal does.. Same goes for vibration and general durability is most likely much lower.. There were a bunch of the quad band mobiles that were failing at very high rates and with little to no service and support they are basically throw aways.. So when your cheap radio does not hold frequency or the audio deviation varies with temperature you got exactly what you paid for..

They are clones, yes... But some are very well designed and constructed. I have had the Anytone 5888UV for several years, and it's covered under the optional "lifetime" warranty Amazon offers on all my purchases. I needed a 50-watt dual band rig in a hurry for emcomms, and being on Social Security was on a limited budget. At the time, adding another $600 Icom 5100 as a backup radio was not within my means. I assumed it would be a short term throw away purchase. Instead, it has proved itself a real workhorse, being mounted in a Kawasaki Mule. Since the venerable FT-8900R is copied was no longer available, it made sense. Not a fan of Anytone, but this one has been so rock reliable under hard use that the county bought us five more just like it, and they are also holding up and performing well. Yes, buying Chinese radios can be a hit or miss proposition... But when on a budget and the Japanese manufacturer fails to offer a product you want at a price within your budget, the risk is often justified. I have a Radtel HT sent to me for review and evaluation at no cost that has become my EDC. Both the Anytone and the Radtel tested clean on the service monitor and have held up under hard use, I'm not inclined to paint all Chinese radios with such broad brush strokes. Just don't ask me about the Radioddity GA-510 handheld that is a complete disaster. ;)
