I just picked up a case of them. It seems like despite it being marketed as a target load, it would work with a deer. No hogs where I live but we do have deer.

Since 1962 I’ve used the .357 ctg and to this day still do ! I’ve hunted deer for a long time using that ctg and the ctg has done well ! I use bullet weights from 158 grain to the 180 grain ! Mostly the Keith design in 170 grain for hunting and like the results ! I have not used the Nosler 158 gr HP to hunt with just yet!! Remington 158 grain is one very tough bullet and I’ve used them for years ! The Nosler makes tough hunting bullets so once I get out there to hunt I put a lot of faith in their bullets !!

Good morning george and group. I took two northern whitetails with a marlin cowbow special 24” bbl at 75 and 125 yds, both in the boiler room and they were down within 50 yds. Very happy and confident within 150 yds. I believe the loads were federal big game loads.

I love my 357 levers. I had a stainless, 20" Rossi M92, a beautiful rifle with great fit and finish, very accurate and smooth BUT with my aging eyes I needed a rifle to mount a red dot on. Traded it (must of had 5000 rounds through it) for a 20", 357 Henry Big Boy All Weather. Again a real winner and I mounted a RMR red dot on it. What a blast to shoot. I had taken a few deer with the Rossi and I'm sure the Henry is just as capable especially with my heavy handloads. For a defense gun I can load 11 38 Special 158gr +P's, coming out of that 20" barrel and they are running just over 1350fps, formidable. Did I mention it's dirt cheap to shoot ? I load hand cast and powder coated 158gr Lee flat points with 5gr or so of just about any pistol powder I might have a surplus of for 1100fps plinkers. Brass is range pickup, free. Lead is scrap, free. Picked up 5lbs of scrap paint powder (kind of a bluish green) from a local coater, free. I picked up cases of small pistol primers before Covid at $30/k, .03c/round and 4lb's of of PB powder was a C note on sale with tax, 1lb = 1,400 rounds. At 5.0gr/round that's a nickel for the powder, it's .08c/round and my time but my Dillon SDB cuts that down but the grandkids love it. There's not a water filled beer can safe within 100 yards with them pulling the trigger.

My children and I have killed a couple dozen deer with the 357 Mag. The Hornady XTP bullet in 125, 158, and 180 is a great performer. We have also taken deer with the Barnes 110gr XPB, the Remington 125 jhp. Last year we started using the Hornady 140 FTX and have only taken 2 deer with it so far. For the short range eastern woods hunting we do it has proven to be the perfect fit for us. The kids practice with 38 special and hunt with 357.

According to trajectory charts for .357 bullets. I would say the max accurate range would be about 125 yards. After that the rounds downward swoop would be hard to guesstimate accuracy wise. Expansion would still be there even during the downward swoop though. On most rounds. For long range I would prefer a spitzer pointed bullet.

Those Hammerdown bullets say they are “molecularly bonded” according to the box. But others have demonstrated as you have that they seem prone to separating. Which is a shame, they seemed perfect to me, and they were hard to come by for the longest time so I stocked up when I was able to find some. But I think I’ll use my Barnes 180s for hunting instead. Why .357 Magnun? Cause they are cool!! Because they are still relevant to todays rifleman and hunters. I think this is one of your best videos. I really liked how you presented and used the balistic gel. The top view side by side comparison coupled with the use of the moving measurements really showed how they each perform. Then you topped it off with the bullets on a stick. That wrapped up the entire sequence and comparison/test. The end was even great. You knew you had already stated the info and instead of ending with more of the same you added what viewers might be thinking. Perfect Pitch for the .357 or any round. You found a way to reinvent yourself, I love it!!

I have the Miroku Winchester 1892 saddle ring version also 357 mag. Japanese Winchesters are very nicely built. I also have a "Remlin" 1894 in 357 that has worked out amazingly well after breaking it in. However a Ruger-Marlin is definitely on my wish list. I'm always amazed with the performance of the 357 magnum in a carbine. I don't know if many people are aware of the almost ridiculous performance increase you get 357 revolver vs carbine! Thanks for your presentations. Always intelligent and informative. You're a good representative for the shooting sports community 👍

In loads using slower burning propellant (such as 2400), the velocity with a hot load vs. 4 inch revolver is usually double, if not a bit more. There's a good deal of consideration with that, because pistol projectiles aren't built to stand up to high speed impact. Either one finds a tougher projectile, or simply enjoy the much extended range the rifle gives, essentially extending 4-inch pistol ballistics an additional 160yd.
@drsmokeybones
@drsmokeybones 15 күн бұрын
@exothermal.sprocket True. Nosler does or at east did Make their partition bullet For handgun hunting. For sure Somebody would need to find a tough enough handgun bullet for those kind of velocities.

@@drsmokeybones Swift A-frame, Hawk, XTP Magnum (only available in 45 cal), Sierra Sportsmaster, Speer Deep Curl, there's probably others. I've no experience one way or another with Nosler's Sporting Handgun projectiles. It's easy to get a hardcast to hold up, but if you want expansion and very good shock transfer, it pretty much requires a jacketed projectile.

The federal load is called a "target" load because some knucklehead will climb all over Federal because there was only a little deformation out of his 2" revolver on milk jugs. If you avoid Texas heart shots, regardless of bullet, it will work just fine on deer. Just be realistic about the distances for which a 357 carbine is useful.

Great to see a new video from Target Suite and that other guy. The stick mounted bullets were good. I think that Marlin and Winchester need a Henry for competition. For hunting the only limit on the 357 Mag is how fast it loses velocity and energy as it goes down range. Hornady Leverevolution rounds help the bullets keep their speed, but not sure if they are hunting bullets. You may have to spend some time and have some fun at the range testing that Federal target ammo and the Leverevolution stuff

@TargetSuite

@minerblue9641
@minerblue9641 2 ай бұрын
I agree. 16" to 20" of barrel for almost any magnum pistol round really boosts velocities. Short stubby rounds like 9mm and 45 acp don't gain anywhere near the amount of velocity a .357 Mag or a 44Mag gain. Using Magnum pistol rounds out of rifle barrels for hunting is when you should really get selective about ammo. A sturdy bullet is needed. In case you are presented with a very short range shot. Also any round nose or flat point bullet (wheather it is a HP or not) is limited in range due to massive velocity loss. Even though expansion still ocurrs. Because when the bullet is on its downward drop at the furthest ranges of its effective accuracy. Accuracy is very hard to achieve. Since all bullets never travel at exactly the same velocity the faster ones will shoot to a higher point of aim. Thats why the 30-30 is effective only to about 150 yds. Even though a good 150 gr. or 170gr. bullet out of a 30-30 starts out traveling roughly, at about 2300 to (optimistically) 2400 fps. Is only recommended effective out to 150 yds. And the recommendarion is correct and should be stuck to. Spitzer bullets and higher velocity are needed for accuracty to about 200 yards and over. If more range is needed or desired then a caliber with extra velocity and spitzer bullets is needed. A round nose or flat point bullet usually won't go much past 225yds to 250yds even when loaded in the 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge. So the notion of loading pistol bullets to dangerous pressures to increase velocity should be resisted. You'll only wear out your expensive rifle faster and accuracy may be destroyed in an effort to gain a measly 50fps more. Its not worth it. So to make a long story short; don't try to turn a .357 Magnum into a 30-30. I just isn't worth the hassle.

@minerblue9641 I agree except when it comes to the 45 ACP + p. That ammo really gains a boost in a carbine length barrel. I posted a video about the Ruger LC Carbine in that cartridge and the Boost in power level was amazing!

Several projectiles I'd consider in various weight: Swift A-frame, Hornady XTP, Speer Deep Curl. Grizzly makes a 180 and 200 gr hardcast that would penetrate silly distances, but it wouldn't have quite the same shock energy transfer.

Question for you about the Marlin rifle. Did you have any trouble stuffing the cartridges into the tube? I got a new 1894 Marlin and it's all I can do to get more than a couple into it. Also the tip of the bullet seems to want to head down into the gate as opposed to forward into the tube. You too ?
