Last week, we compared the Apple Studio Display to the much cheaper and feature rich Samsung M8 Display, and the comparison was popular with MacRumors readers, so we thought we'd pit the Studio Display against yet another competing option, Dell's UltraSharp 27-inch "U2723QE" 4K USB-C Hub Monitor.

I got this model about a month ago for my Mac Mini, and Im in awe. It’s such a fantastic screen for my needs - it has a beautiful display, it’s minimalistic (which for me is the equivalent of a good design, I hate all those Bells and whistles), it has plethora of ports, more then I will ever need, it turns on very quickly, doesn’t wobble, plenty of brightness (I keep it around 70-75% bright), simple menu with good access via button on the back side panel. I also don’t use monitor speakers ever so it’s great that I don’t have to pay for that and use my iPhone as a continuity camera so I don’t need a build in one. The image via USB c is phenomenal, this lets me use my Mac mini hdmi post to connect another screen. There is no issue with scaling on Mac, contrary to what some people been saying. It’s stable, the stand is flat so I can put stuff on it. Plus 27” turned out to be so much better then 32 or 34” which would be waaaaay to big. Overall 10/10. Seriously. For me.:)

Hello. I have Macbook pro 13", i want to connect it big monitor for editing photo and video. I watch many reviews about Samsung M8, Dell U2723, Lenovo Qreator 27, Samsung S80UA. I cannot decide to buy one of them. Please help me about it.

@@ElchinJavadov I'm no expert, however I am an expert in being overly "researcherous" and I can only suggest this - if you already have narrowed your search to these 4 then there is only one thing to do. Just PICK ONE AND BE DONE wit it :) Seriously. Just make a decision, get it, test it in your environment and if you're happy with it, keep it. If not, send it back and choose something else. There is NO PERFECT MONITOR. And there is not much sense in wasting time (like I did) to keep narrowing forever. There will always be something and the truth is, it doesn't matter. We are not curing cancer here, and it's not a major life decision. It's just a monitor.:) I for one didn't like Samsung M8 because it seem plasticky. I also narrowed my search to the companies that make a product that is suppose to do one thing but do it well, that's why I picked Dell - no crazy features, no speakers. It's a monitor, not a coffee maker and a lawn mower in one. I am super happy with my Dell. It's minimalistic, no fuss with any features, tons of ports, great stand, sharp as a scalpel in terms of picture quality. And it's enough.

I've been using this monitor for about a year now with a M1 MacBook and my new M3 MacBook. It looks great, it has wonderful color and accuracy. However, the famous Mac scaling problem...Your Mac will want to run this monitor with the UI sized at 1080p, which makes everything sharp but the UI is really big. The next best thing is running the UI scaled to 1440, which looks correct but the text is not great. It's readable, and it's fine, but if you spend the entire day reading it's not all that sharp and might annoy you with time. You can look up videos as to why this is, but basically Macs don't like 4k monitors. To get the UI right, it runs at 5k, then scales down to 4k. If you plug in this monitor and ask your Mac what resolution it's running, it will say 5k. The scaling down to 4k costs some of your performance, a few %, and the text suffers a bit. Maybe you won't mind, but you should know you're making a compromise on a 4k monitor to save some money, and it's an expensive monitor. I wish I wasn't misled by reviewers. This is a fantastic monitor for my Windows computer, and mediocre for my Mac.

Its a great question, all I can figure is one should get the Studio Display if you have the means, otherwise this monitor is good. You just have to be ok with the compromises and know what you're getting so you're not mad and wish you got the Studio Display. You aren't going to get this monitor and plug it in and be like "hey this monitor is trash" cause it isn't, but you also aren't going to plug it in and be like "hey this monitor is perfect for my mac and really shows its full potential" cause it doesn't do that either.@@Lexlugr

I have the 32" and 27" versions. 332 in landscape and 27 in portrait. I have and M1 Macbook pro and there are scaling issues. Unless you want it tiny you'll have to take the resolution down a notch, which is a problem the studio display doesn't have. That being said these monitors work great. @Andrew Hamilton I just got myself a Dell 27" Ultrasharp. I changed the 4k resolution one step down because everything was super small. If I scaled one more step I can see now what people mean by "scaling issues". The text is indeed a tiny tiny bit less sharp, but to be honest? I couldn't care less! :) This "scaling issue" is NOT an issue at all! And I have no idea why people so exaggerate this issue, as many other for that matter. The M Processor Macs begin to flicker in dark mode or while running websites with black backgrounds and after a while it gets bad. Once it starts it doesn't stop. The Intel Mac has no issues with flickering. IF YOU HAVE AN APPLE SILICON MAC, DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL. Dell's website says this, among other 27" 4K models are unsupported on MAC OS. With monitors, It seems like it is with HiFi purists: ordinary people (like most of us including me) won't notice the difference between setups differing in costs by a thousand percent like those purists do. It's the case with the Apple Studio Display and any other 4k monitor - the higher resolution isn't that much noticeable as you can run a 4k monitor in a 1440 scale like the Studio Display is giving you without any practical disadvantage (aside from theoretical scale-down artifacts that I yet failed to notice - and I did some screenshots to investigate). Brightness (max, min) in general may be a noticeable difference (comparing an iPad, an MacBook Pro Display and a BenQ 4k Monitor for my Macs) as it adds significantly to contrast in (especially) HDR content - but if you aren't into looking movies all the time it doesn't matter. Most Apple displays excel on max brightness. They can make the light of a car blinding you on screen if it appears in a movie. Not relevant for my work doing on apple devices. Displaying black? My BenQ P2700U (promoted by BenQ for its color accuracy to photographers) does display black as black as its bezel with a simple IPS panel - if you see black as "more black" on an Apple display, it is for the additional brightness of those parts of the frame that aren't black. But in general with current consumer technology: black is black. That wasn't the case a few years ago, where background lighting of ordinary displays turned anything black into grey.

The Dell was on my shortlist and I almost almost got it.... until I took the plunge and went for the ASD instead I come from a 5kimac I just love the glossy screen experience and just didn't want to buy something that I might regret, and I agree with your comments about the fit and finish comparisons between the ASD and the rest, knowing that I will be staring at the next screen I buy for the next 6 to 7 years. I also read somewhere how macOS doesn't scale down well with 4k displays resulting in blurry text according to some users (compared to text which is scaled down on 5k and 2k displays). Has anyone noticed blurrier text? The dell is probably the best bang in the current market for Mac owners. It's kinda like choosing which camera to buy or any other tech. You can spend exponentially more for a only slightly better tech, but sometimes that's worth it to the user.

@@BrandonMilner tried to post a link but was deleted. There is a yt video and online charts that compare macos scaling on 5k, 4k and 2k displays. Im not a tech guy but my understanding is this: 1) macos is more suited for downscaling to 5K or 2K displays (at the resolution that people "ideally" use i.e. not massive or too small icons/text) compared to 4K displays 2) for 4K displays, whilst downscaling is definitely possible, macos has to work "harder" (something like it has to reduce the resolution by half for each cycle) to downscale the "ideal" resolution to fit 4K screens. 3) This may result in a loss of performance - as the core is already performing the downscaling (on 4K monitors) in the first instance, in addition to other cpu/gpu intensive tasks that you might be doing at that time, like video editing etc. There is a loss in performance overall. You may not notice this if you are using general office apps. There is also another video that compares text resolution on 4K vs 5K, and there is a notable difference - at least if you come from a 5K imac.

I bought the 27-inch version of this monitor. There wasn't setup documentation out of the box. I had to call technical support right off the bat, which didn't make me happy because you have to provide a "service tag" or serial number before they will even help you. For example, I had no idea how to get past the black menu that appeared on the monitor. It wasn't clear if the menu was controlled by some downloadable software or the monitor itself. To control monitor functions, there is a "joystick" button on the back. It's an okay monitor, but I expected more for this price point. I couldn't readily find the user documentation online. The instructions I did find, didn't match my display dialog box on my 2021 MacBook Pro, so the display setup was very confusing. You have to download a software manager to really control the display. I'm not real wild about the contrast on this display. This is why I like Apple so much because there is no futzing around to figure out to use something. It just works out of the box. I do like the ports hub on the back and the USB-C connection to the MacBook Pro is working well. I have also plugged in my Epson scanner to the back of the monitor. But, it's going to take some time to learn about and optimize the features of this display.

You say this is a great monitor but not great at HDR. The apple monitor doesn't do HDR AT ALL so is this a negative? Wouldn't turning HDR off entirely be equivalent? Concerning the resolution, this is the best fit for Mac Users because the resolution here is 2560x1440p, which suits the native macOS resolution without getting tiny letters when rescaling from 4k. So, if you can’t get a 5k monitor for your Mac, the best next choice is something like this: 2560x1440p.

I have been looking for a screen suitable for mac mini recently, with a budget of less than 400pounds (you don’t want to buy a screen that is much higher than the price of the host) and it must have a beautiful appearance and high image quality. At first I found Samsung M8, and MSI Modern MD271UL, but in the end I may still buy Dell. The picture quality of M8 is not good, and the MSI stand cannot be adjusted. Because I often use phtotshop, I have always used Mac screens, and it is difficult to find alternatives. One reason is that glossy monitors are rare in the market, and then they have to meet high nits, preferably IPS panels, and can also use USBC , I dare not try OLED because it has the problem of screen burning after long-term use. U2723QE is around 623pounds S2722QC is a cheaper one.

4K scaling on Mac OS still looks terrible. 1440P seems to be a better resolution than 4K if you are not buying the LG ultra fine or studio display. Re: "...the 5k is probably quite a difference". My Apple Studio Monitor arrived about two weeks ago. Let's put it to you this way - using the Apple Studio will never disappoint you for as long as you own it. The clarity of it is everything and its speakers are a delight. (Speaking of sound, if I REALLY want to hear great sound with my computer based video content, I just "AirPlay switch" the audio content to my HomePod stereo pair that are located basically behind me - enough said about a speaker pair that has appreciated dramatically in price every since Apple discontinued them. That should indicate something about their sound quality.) I don't doubt the Dell is a very good monitor - but - you will always be reminded of the fact that it is a "compromise". It is a very good to great compromised design but it will never delight you as the Apple Studio Monitor will. Is the Apple Studio Monitor worth $1000 more than the Dell. I don't know, honestly. How much do you value your eyesight? Your choice of monitor will impact your enjoyment over the next seven to eight years so ultimately, it is the consumer's call to make.
