Looking for a video on what you need to know about working around a hot track for safety, unspoken rules, things to watch for, what equipment I should wear, do i need a radio? Those kind of things. Tips for working automotive racing photographers at tracks would be great.
@JDanielV27
@JDanielV27 23 күн бұрын
Hey, hope you are well, that is on my list, but as I haven't had too much involved inside the tracks I don't want to speak about something I don't have a lot experience of. However, each track has its own rules in terms of how one can get the media pass and how easy o difficult the request process can be. There are some things you need. 1) Liability insurance (in case of accident) 2) You can move freely on the track as far is safe to do so (there are some areas you can not stand to take picture for safety reasons) However whenever you are in the track always look for a quick exit or be safe as an incident can happen. 3) They will provide you a Media hi vis vest. 4) the radio it will depend if you are working with a team or someone else, or if you want to listen the circuit channel to know what is happening. I hope this can help and get you an idea of what you need to start with. Please, if you have any other enquiry let me know. Happy to help. Hopefully I can make a video with more details soon.

@@MannsWoodlandPerspective It sounds incredible, last year I went to a historic circuit at Brands Hatch. I made a video about the history of Silverstone and it's really interesting the history and what the cars were like back then.

I'm a beginner, and in my first events I took my photos in 1/2000, and I was never happy with the result, so I'm going to try between 1/60@1/160! thanks for the advice my friend!

Oooh nooo! I know the feeling 🤦‍♂️. When all the photos are ruined for the shutter speed.... adjust the shutter depending on the car's speed and you're ability on panning to achieve great results. Hope you can get amazing photos this time, I'd love to see the results. Best regards my friend

Great video! As an additional tip: turn off your image stabilization if your lens doesn’t have a panning setting. I forgot at the first event I went to to try panning and I had only a few nice photos.

Yes, that is a great tip and practice when the lens doesn't have stabilisation. Thanks for mentioning it. I am sure it will help someone else too. It is a shame you missed some shots in the first event, now you are ready for the next one 😎

When panning if would go on full manual. As you said the motion during the exposure is giving you the background blur. But having a wide open lense will make more parts off the car blurry and potential the part you aim for. Depending of the angle the car intercepts the depth which is focused, the car might be quickly out of this small band of sharp ranges. Also the OS might have a separate mode for panning. Thnaks for the video Did Rallycross and DTM.

That's awesome. Happy you learned a lot, thank you for your comment. I use the sigma 24mm f1.4 for wide shots, the Canon 50mm f1.4 lens for more details and compressed shots and the Canon RF 100-500mm for track racing. I used before the Canon EF 75 - 300mm. In the description are the links if you want to have a look the other gear I use. I could make a comparison tutorial with the lenses if you need more information. When shooting at night does the same settings work or you need a speedlite?
@JDanielV27
@JDanielV27 7 ай бұрын
At night is quite tricky, you will need to bring up the ISO, too much will start getting some noise in the image, you can fix it after in post with denoise, but try not to increase it too a crazy levels. Lower aperture will help a lot too, Shutter speed will be similar. Try to find a good light spot so it will help to light the car. The Flash won't help at all as the cars are a bit far from the camera and the light will lose power over the distances, and if you use a more powerful flash you could dazzle the driver and that is not good. I hope this helps

I thought we have to use a maximum speed possible in shutter speed
@JDanielV27
@JDanielV27 9 ай бұрын
Not at all times. When cars are facing to the camera where you can't see the wheels, you'll need a higher shutter speed to be able to freeze the car. In other circumstances we want to preserve the movement of the wheels; Otherwise, it will look like nothing is happening in the shot. There are some photographers that use the shutter speed at 1/15 sec in some shots (for more creative shots).
