Im glad you guys showed the face from the persective you would as a golfer, everyone else only shows the head from a shelf perspective. I found the white lines on the AI Smoke 7 Wood allowed me to turn off my brain and be confident of where the club was. I couldnt hit ANY of the other brands except maybe the Ping, but the Callaway was truly a zero thought swing for me and an immediate in the bag trajectory for my swing from swing #1. I didnt know I was such a visually dependent golfer until I got a club fitting and could try everything and find out it wasnt me, it was the club ;)

I just stumbled onto this video. Excellent, really enjoyed it to the point where I decided I was going to buy a 7 wood then remembered I had a Callaway Steelhead III which I barely used. I took to the range and was surprised how good a club that came out in 2002 performed. I tested it against the Titleist TSR2, as I recently bought Titleist woods and a hybrid. Although I’m itching to buy the new TSR2, the old Callaway performed so well, I’ve decided that before I purchase, I will get some Trackman data because with the naked eye, I could not see a material difference in length between the two.

@@unknownKnownunknowns We had a Titleist demo day where I’m a member and I tried the Titleist TSR2 21 degree and the shaft that worked best for me was the HZRDUS red CB TSR 5.5. Its been a while so I don’t have all the data such as spin rate. From memory when comparing, the two things highlighted were dispersion and carry. The dispersion on the Titleist was tighter, however, carry on the Steelhead III was a couple of yards longer, 5 at best. I asked the Titleist rep his opinion as to why the Steelhead III was slightly longer and he said perhaps it’s the weight. I decided that although the dispersion on the Titleist was tighter, it was not sufficient to justify the cost. In terms of aesthetics although my Steelhead III is virtually new the Titleist is a better looking club but that’s progress. If I did not have the 7 wood Steelhead III I would have bought the Titleist. One final point is a few people, decent golfers, asked to try my Steelhead III they were surprised by the performance.

Have played forged blades with traditional lofts (34 degree 7 iron) for decades and still do though will be 83 this June. But it became crystal clear a couple of years ago that I no longer had the swing speed needed to play long irons in terms of distance, trajectory and gaps, and that my 31 degree 6 iron was probably the last iron I should play. I get the same distance, height and descent angle with it as from the 29 to 30.5 degree lofted 7 irons in the TM P790, Ping i530, Mizuno Pro 245 or Wilson forged Dynapower. Also concluded that I needed to change from stiff to regular flex in my woods. So in late 2022 I got Callaway Epic Max 3W, 5W and a 21 degree 7W. Then last year I added a Callaway Paradym 24 degree 9W. I replaced my 3, 4 and 5 irons with the 7W and 9W. Easier to hit, get height and distance. Also great for hitting out of rough alongside fairways. Highly recommend for much younger players with faster swing speeds as well. Often let a fellow player try mine out during a round and its fun to see the eyes pop out. Used to think 7 and 9 woods were for little old ladies and senior men who really needed help. But changed completely after reading that Dustin Johnson had both a 7w and 9w, and other pros as well. As you point out, they use them for long approaches of 240+ yards with very high trajectories and steep descent angles that will stop the ball on small hard and fast greens over forced carries. Kind of like giant 8 or 9 irons. They could hit 2 irons or driving irons the same distance, but with low trajectories and descent angles that would not stop on the green. If playing on a links course with high winds, they can of course change back to the long irons, hit the same distance, but with low trajectories out of the wind and run onto greens.

Thanks for watching and the comment! We'd love that too, believe me. It's almost impossible however because the different brands offer a different package of both stock and premium shafts with all their products. And it's especially difficult with 7-woods because some of them are bonded, and others are adjustable. We have in the past, when possible, utilized the same shaft if we can. I hope this doesn't deter you from watching our content in the future! - Drew

The 3wood is really good but the 7 wood is something else. I'm a +4, was a 2 iron user for 20+ years, but don't have the game for a real 2 iron anymore. I have also NEVER gotten along with any hybrid or utility iron long term except for my Gen 6 PXG but it tendes to be to low spin at times. I can do anything I need to with this 7 wood. I had been toying with the idea of a 7 wood for a few years but never pulled the trigger as I never could find one to demo with a shaft in the weight and profile range I like. Lost me when there was no PXG 7 wood I'm gaming the gen 6 and would put it against any of the 6 clubs you highlighted. I have personally tried the Ai smoke, Qi and Tsr offerings and found the PXG to be better. That's before you throw the black ops into the mix.

St-max is the best, you should test 2024 clubs not 2023 against 2024

It isn't the lofts; it's the tech and materials in the faces and shafts. The technology and optimization of club performance over the last 3-4 years eclipses the last 30, possibly the last 50. There is no comparison between clubs of today and the 1980s. Even forged muscle backs have improved exponentially.
