Just had a compressor failure on a Platinum system after 2 1/2 years of service. My cost to replace was $2300. Took almost a month to get a new compressor from AS. Failure happened during highest temps ever in TX. We've had 105+ degrees for days on end when it happened. Had to run portable units throughout the house. Monitored my utility voltage for about 3 weeks and found it would drop to 210 from a normal of 245 at various times during the day or night. This probably led to the failure. Installed a Kool-Guard surge device at the condenser disconnect the day after it was back in service. Can't afford this to happen again.

is it true that they say american standard platinum series is a very best hvac systems in the entire world??? does anyone know????

We put a new AS system in 2019. Had to replace the coil already last month.

What happened? Leaked? Which coil? Inside or outside? I heard the inside ones are the fragile microchannel, is it true? I thought they would have learned their lesson by now...

Why would the Gold 17 and Platinum 18 have a "high installation cost" compared to any other condensing unit made by American Standard or other manufacturer? And what is the "double fan motor" feature on the Platinum units?

They don't whoever created this video is inexperienced and probably has never cut an HVAC system in their life I've spent the last week with about 4 different HVAC contractors and I've been tossing up between a variable speed or a dual stage system the only difference is is the cost of the unit installation is the same for all three..

@@Brad.W That statement in this video just never made any sense to me. The units look the same, are about the same size and weigh about the same, so how could one cost more than the other to install. Stupid stuff. I'm trying to decide right now between 2-stage and variable speed, so let me know what you end up with and why you chose it.

@@omcbob37 I mean me and the wife pretty much want to do a variable speed but man those things are expensive as hell and all of the hvac contractors around here like to use American standard or Goodman and the one that has been recommended to us by more than one place is the 5 ton AccuComfort™ Variable Speed Platinum 18 Air Conditioner and air handler it's like $12k plus install.

@@Brad.W Yeah, the Platinum 18 is the one I was looking at and I got a ballpark quote of like $18 to 20K installed including the air handler. That's just crazy.

@@omcbob37 ironically I just had that exact same system installed your $20,000 ballpark is about dead on for me it was $30,000 they finished construction yesterday I had to have some of my ductwork redone which pushed my total cost to $30k my $30K price tag also included $9k in parts and labor needed to complete the job which included things like a few supply registers from my old system that was rusted out also 2 25x30 filter box return registers plus a handful of other things needed to complete my job. Was only $12K for the air handler and Platinum 18 heat pump plus another $10K for some ductwork repair/replacement.. And I just happened to mention to my project manager that someone told me that the cost of these units are more than their Gold and Silver series counterparts. Ol mate laughed at me and told me it's partially true price of the units themselves are roughly about the same with the exception of about $1,000 give or take what makes them more expensive is the repairs if something breaks down on a platinum it cost twice as much to fix than the same part on a two stage the same also applies between a two stage and a single stage as well as between a heat pump and a non heat pump system that's where the higher price comes from. Something tells me whoever created these videos didn't do their homework because all Gold series including the Gold 17 are heat pumps as well as two stage they are not classified as an air conditioner.
