T SEARS POINT, NEAR THE Gila River in Arizona, around two miles of basalt cliff edges are filled with ancient art. There are more than 2,000 panels of rock art, with an estimated 10,000 petroglyphs elements. The area also contains a number of geoglyphs and other features of archaeological interest.
Archaeologists consider Sears Point one of the most significant collections of rock art in the American Southwest. This is due to the sheer density of petroglyphs, as well as the unique style of art. Many of the petroglyphs have been attributed to the Patayan culture tradition. Many different design elements are visible on these panels, including curvilinear, rectilinear, anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, abstract, and stylistic figures. In some places, flat basalt rocks were used for petroglyphs to mark trails. Several major petroglyph panels may be associated with Native American myths and legends. This area around Sears Point has been utilized for centuries by many cultures. Today, there are 15 tribes that claim cultural affiliation with the area.Download oin this chann/Users/jeffreyschreckler/Desktop/License_823483 - 2022-2025-2.pdfel to get access to perks:

Sears Point is likely the premier petroglyph site in southwest Arizona. I have been visiting it regularly during the past 31 years. There are als o 10-12 other impressive sites along the Gila between Sears Piont and Buckeye, several of which have been featured on this channel. These sites are being properly protected by existing antiquities laws and BLM management along with the public respect for their significance. National Monument designation would do more harm than good. The proposal to designate 330,000 acres is excessively greedy. The worthy sites could be protected by 10-12 parcels, each from 20 to 800 acres in size; so a total of maybe 4000 or 5000 acres. If you imagine that our right to access these sites would be maintained that would be a very risky assumption. Consider the nearby Sonora Desert National Monument. Over the 2+ decades since Clinton designated it the only significant management has been to keep us citizens who "own" it from entering the backcountry. It has almost all been designated wilderness or "temporary closure ". The proposed National Monument would be something that all of us who love this backcountry and history will ultimately regret.
