I smiled when you mentioned Maine authors at least twice! I've lived in Maine for over 30 years and these two men are legends here. It's amazing how much we can grow in what many people consider "way up north". I like to remind people that there's a perfectly lovely country further north, above us, where people also grow productive gardens. A few years ago my husband and I listened to a talk Will Bonsall gave about growing your own wheat. He knows his stuff! (he was giving a class at the Common Ground Fair, held yearly in Unity, Maine.) Also, we built a greenhouse similar to that which Elliot Coleman describes in his book, Four Season Harvest. We had fresh veggies from mid April to the end of November...in Maine, zone 4, in an unheated greenhouse.

I find it fascinating also that two of the best authors on gardening are from Maine.

I have all of those but after learning more about landrace farming my ideas about seed saving and breeding has changed. I think I would keep Resilient Gardener, Seed to Seed and Will Bonsall's book but I would add Landrace Gardening by Joseph Lofthouse.

It's interesting to see several authors/gardeners are from the great state of Maine (my home state 😉). I suppose if you can grow there you can grow anywhere! Thank you so much for this. I've been scouring the internet for the best homesteading books and have found that a lot of them just don't pertain to our lifestyle. I'm off to add many of these to my Amazon cart. Keep up the great work!

For sure, if you can make it in Maine you can make it most places in the lower 48. I love Maine, beautiful state.

Great list! One additional book I would consider is "The Mittleider Gardening course". If I had only two books I would want this one and along with "The resilient gardener"

I think this book is the absolute best: "The Mittleider Gardening Course" January 1, 2021. Using Jacob R. Mittleider's methods, one pallet of mineral fertilizers would last 10 years for a family of four.
