I love how you put your money where your moth is Mac. You talk a lot about being a good FPS quake player back in the day and it really shines through with your Overwatch play. You are very good at the game. Just wanted to say that I really respect you for not only saying you are used to be good at quake etc but you also show it in the modern FPS of today. Nice one man, keep it up. Also really hope everything is working out for you in your new house. Times must be pretty tough but hopefully with the support of your fans it will make things a little easier. I felt like he only really focused on the combat and largely ignored the story, characters, world, and rpg elements. The combat definitely leaves some things to be improved but it isn't the only thing that makes up the Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3 with all DLC are my game of the year. The dodge and block thingy is not a problem for me. I know you push a button you dodge and block. But you are playing a story driven game. You did not create the character. So Geralt is a witcher he can move fast and block anything because he is a mutated super human killer. So you are role playing a guy that can dodge fast and block and hear anything you don't role play as fat guy with sword who's name fuck face. And you cannot compare it to Skyrim because Skyrim is like a RPG sandbox. You create your character and choose to be anything in game. While Witcher you are following a certain path of a witcher. This is my opinion. Because i play so much of the Witcher 3 and until now i'm still get bit and pieces of surprise in so many different outcomes. An with a developers that listen to its fan base and proving that money is not their goal. I say this is a "Game of the Century for Story driven Role playing games"

"Rimworld is limitless." what utter shite. i think Rimworld is as great as any indie game but to call it limitless is ignorance or stupidity. for one, you could have a 1000+ NPC prison in PA. you can simulate massive amounts of people living and working in a prison facility. whereas Rimworld is optimized for colonies of under 20 pawns. the game is balanced around that maximum number, and while I have pushed some savegames beyond 30 (Randy), the game quickly goes from being fun to being a resource management chore because the game map is designed to provide for a much lower population count. even with caravans and trading added in A16, it's still very much optimized (hardware) and balanced (design) as a small colony sim. so that's just ONE major limitation of Rimworld you obviously didn't know about as a fanboy. don't even get me started on your bullshit argument that Rimworld puts in a constant stream of content whereas PA doesn't. prior to their final release, the PA crew were doing CONSTANT MONTHLY updates for YEARS. i don't think they missed even one month or went on holiday. the rate of their content development has been on par and at times even higher than Rimworld's substantial updates every few months or so (few months between A15 and A16?). just because a prison-themed management game isn't particularly your taste, you decide to be blindly vitriolic towards that game and stupidly declare your planet-survival one the king of all trades "limitless" management/sim game. nice try. want to compare it to other great sim games just to see how "limitless" an individual game actually is?

Dwarf Fortress, the game that Rimworld is taken from, was limitless. Rimworld only has about 1% complexity that Dwarf fortress had, and to learn the game mechanics took brains, and years to master.

I really do not get why you are so obsessed with only first person being, the only way to play games. You have gothic, you have morrowind, you have legacy of kain, you have kotor, you have mass effect, those all are the third person games and yet they are good games. I really do not get why so much hate for third person, they always were a thing.

Third person is great in many types of games but not when it's a tactical shooter as it allows you to see around corners and over obstacles which kind of ruins the whole sense of sneaking around for me.

I agree you on that, i tried playing fallout3/fallout nv, couldn't hit anything in third person using range weapon, i didn't have any problems using first person. But disagree. Deus Ex HR, is first person/third person game, still a great game. I personally have an opinion that not including third person mode is developer lazyness because they do not want to include proper moving/atacking animation. Example of it are borderland and dead island, using hacks/cheats you could enable third person, but using it, isn't optimal for me, it is clunky, looks horrible. That's my viewpoint, it always was, hope it make my reasoning more crearly now.

You have jedi knight/jedi academy. I played tons of that games multiplayer in my youth and it add to the immersion. The thing that you could duel with people for half an hour and didn't get hit once or redirect rocket comming your way and the person atacking you was epic. Addition of force powers and first person pawns any multiplayer to this day. You die too freaking quick in todays multiplayer games. It is a shame.

I totally dissagree with you mack on Doom. It's way way better than Doom 3. That game was basically jumpscare : the game, doom edition. Scary, but as a shooter not as great as Doom 1-2. And the flashlight thing was HATED by pretty much a huge majority of Doom Fans, there was even a "Duct tape" mod that enabled flashlight to every weapon, because at the time game engine couldn't handle the flashlight and other effects, not so advanced as you would like to believe. I know you have a dear spot for D3, because you and your pal were the first let's players on youtube, but nostalgia is clouding your mind, making original doom 3 seem more than it actually is. Doom 4 is a much better shooter- hard, fast paced and totally awesome. Dumb in places, but that is what it was in 90's. Also, if you pay attention and read the journal entries ( doom 3 also had those) the story is much better than it seems on the surface.

Naa I thought D3 was more immersive, more story driven and although it degenerated into a series of predictability in the final few levels the whole experience with the torch was amazing. The only people who hated the torch thing were the twitch shooter brigade who wanted a fast paced "Quake" like experience.

Worth A Buy I would respectfully disagree, but i see where you are coming from - the begining of Doom 3 was very immersive, but that was because it had taken HEAVY inspiration from Half Life 1, which also had survival horror elements in the begining. But unlike D3, HL horror slowly faded away, while Doom 3 awesome horror begining overstayed its welcome and was quite annoying after first few levels, and this is coming from a guy who started with HL series as my first shooters. Doom on the other hand , is pretty much HD version of Brutal Doom and imo it's really worthy of Doom title.

Nah, mate it's because it didn't even made sense for the in-game lore. So in the far future nobody got it into their heads that it be easier to get some scotch-tape or something and tie it to a gun or his armor. Yeah fuck that logic, even actual HL which is set in the real world which had it's fair share of scary moments had a flashlight ready and available at all times. And HL1 was pretty much a structural remake of Doom 1.

Doom (2016) was a dumb shooter just like Doom 1 and Doom 2, hence, people loved it as majority of humans are dumb, it is scientifically proven, Doom 3 was and actual Horror FPS and required a little amount of effort to be put on the brain and hence was not appreciated by all these dumb gamers who wanted to blow up stuff with their mouse left click more than think about approaching the level with caution, but Doom 3 is still considered the few elite intelligent humans as a Masterpiece, I can replay Doom 3 and still enjoy my time but I can never replay Doom (2016) as it will be repetitive as hell

Im an old school gamer and I have the same complaints as you do with video games these days. Especially the ability to see enemies through walls. Games are so damn dumbed down these days. That's why I stick to strategy and rpg's for PC. Even when I play DayZ I use first person mlde so that I dont see enemies around corners or over walls.

Doom and XCOM 2. Fuck everything else. But Steam is OVERFLOWING with garbage now. According to Jim, 40% of ALL Steam games came out 2016, with 80% if you include the last 2 years. It's just a growing tidal wave of GARBAGE. This is why it's so hard to find decent games on Steam now. You have to dig through 1,000 piles of shit for each one. Getting on Steam used to mean something. And as a Steam user, you knew games on Steam were decent. Now it means NOTHING. Steam has become the ONE store on Earth with 0 regulation or quality control. I've been saying all this for years, just like Jim, and ignored. Now look where we're at. Normally any store will reject bad products and refuse to sell it. They won't sell broken toys, ripped shirts, rotten food, and so on. But Steam? They'll sell ANYTHING.

You're still giving money to Valve unless the key was stolen. But they're getting less than if you bought it from them directly. They are getting less money. I recommend Opium Pulses or CDkeys for buying Steam games. They'll undercut Steam. So on top of reducing Valve's cut, you're paying less too.

For me, it would be XCOM 2 and Total War: Warhammer. DLC is a shitty corporate move, but the base game has been my favourite TW game since Napoleon. You're very right, though, Steam needs a lot more quality control, or at least more categorization in order to sift though the garbage to find the gems. You can basically only rely on Mack, Joe, Jim and ACG now in order to see what's shit and what isn't. You cant go 3 games into your exploration queue without finding some broken meme-infused RPGMaker game.

Couldn't agree more about Steam. I am already used to Steam being a ocean of shit, with a few scattered beautiful islands of actual good games in it. Where I have to to accept the help of Navigators, who explore the ocean of shit as a full time job, like for example Mack or Totalbiscuit. But Steam is getting worse and worse and worse, the ocean is growing ever larger while the number of islands stays about the same. I think we are close to the point where even the Navigators will get lost and be unable to find anything good.

Which is sad considering PCs have the superior technology and thus should have superior games. Yet we'll build a super computer, then use it to play 15$ indie games because those are the best games on the market. Whatever we do get that's high end, is designed for consoles first, so they typically require very little to run off expensive machines. The days of games being made for PC first, then watered down for consoles, if ported at all, are long gone. Now it's console first, then shovelware PC second.

I find controllers are much better for driving games. mostly because a keyboard is either on or off. i use a controller for racing games on the PC (only have a few) as I don't have a wheel as of yet, I would like to get one but I have the problem of setting it up as I have to use my mums PC for games that are hardware intensive like BeamNG, as my laptop doesn't cut it.

I didn’t get far enough into Dishonored 2 for the time traveling mission you mentioned. I loved the first game and got distracted that year and never finished Dishonored 2 but Titanfalls time traveling mission impressed me so much because I’ve never seen that done so well and smoothly in a game before and the level design was brilliant like the mission you get to watch the boss fight stage being created in a factory every step of the way. Turns out I missed out on something even better. I need to revisit Dishonored 2.

Third person RPG games work better on M+K take wow for example or any other MMO. Platformers are better on keyboard, fighting games are great on keyboard, space games are awesome with mouse aiming but better with flight stick.

I agree with MMOs, because you tend to have many abilities, so keyboard. Platformers work pretty well on both. But fighting games and space sims are way better on a controller. I tried playing space sim with M+K and I found it really bad. Also, just to let you know, I grew up on playing games with M+K, never had a console up until 2016. So if anything, my preference is more biased towards M+K. Yet I still prefer controller for the games I listed.

Top down, platformers and 3rd person rpg's are superior on M+K. There's only one argument that needs to be mentioned. Amount of hotkeys, but then again, developers seem to lack the knowledge of how to let one use them. I remember actually downloading mods for Skyrim to be able to bind everything to different hotkeys, no pause the game to change weapons/armor or use different potions etc. That made the combat a bit funnier, faster and less repetetive even though it was bad overall.

I was in 2 closed access events for it and both times I HAD to use controller because it was just so much better on one. And HOLY SHIT is x ray Vision one of the biggest pieces of shit in gaming. But I do have to say that I loved 7 days to die and the progress it has made, but it's ok to disagree with that :p

Pedro Carneiro Batista a game does not have to be original to be good. Overwatch took the hero shooter genre and perfected the gameplay. I also enjoy competitive in games like csgo and overwatch has that going for it

Noize true that :') driving still 'works' im used to it, i use the arrow keys for driving in race games, because i grew up with it like that, my first game ever was nfs underground and was for pc, but it certainly is nicer on a controller it's also the only thing i would ever use a controller for i think, together with platformer games etc like nintendo games

WASD is too lurchy to give me a smooth cinematic camera movement to match the sweet graphics... That and walking is like run,stop,run ,stop.... i like to inch forward sometimes, can't do that with a keyboard.

I know from a friend who have contact inside Arkhane Studio that they really struggled to debug , polish and optimize the game for the release date (wich they couldn't change). Surprised about some choices (thought you'd have come down harder on Dishonored 2 and Overwatch), but I totally understand your choices, and now I'm even second guessing some of the more villified titles this year. I hope more developers follow suit and do what Yacht Club did. Look at a genre (platformers) work out what makes it good, adapt it, put their own spin on it, and release a "renaissance" (Shovel Knight- though it's probably not your cup of tea). The industry crash will come, and when it does, we need people like you to remind and inspire us with the best of the past, to teach the future (both new developers and consumers). Keep up the great work man, keep demanding better.

I think my favorite games of 2016 would be...(of the ones I played last year). 1. Witcher 3: Blood and Wine 2. Overwatch 3. World of Warcraft: Legion 4. Fire Emblem Fates 5. Total War: Warhammer 6. Rise of the Tomb Raider (my only issue with it is they keep painting white on climbable surfaces). 7. Valiant Hearts (only played the game this year) 8. South Park Stick of Truth 9. Tokyo Mirage Sessions 10. Pokemon Sun My favorite indie games of 2016 would be.. 1. That travel in time in dishonored 2 is very well done and looks very nice. But I'm surprised you don't see it for what it is : A cloaking gimmick. It's just "push to become invisible" :) Cool video.

Hey Mack, there are three characters with X-Ray vision in Overwatch. The first two were Hanzo and Widowmaker. Hanzo can shoot a small-area X-Ray vision arrow once every 15 seconds or so, and Widowmaker's ultimate gives 15 seconds or so of X-Ray vision, and both of these give the vision to your whole team. The newest one is Sombra, who gets passive X-Ray vision on enemies who are on low health, I think
