I lived there for 15,years. I found it to be a warm welcoming city, the only bad thing is the urban decline. The people there deserve so much better.

+ellwick Sadly the city has suffered like so many others, I moved to Budapest (new job) but I miss the place each and every day, I was made feel welcome from the first minute I arrived, sure it has its assholes just like anywhere else, but overall the people there deserve so much better.

What brings Stoke on Trent down, and working class people in particular, is the low pay and assistance from both National Tory Parties and Local Labour to hold down the lowest paid by means of huge immigration and import of southern citizens hoarded in from London as they couldn't afford to live there. The place reeks with low paid jobs that companies use to their fat wealthy profit making advantage

Calling Hanley a sewer is a compliment. I have lived in Stoke all my life I am in my sixties and I have never seen Hanley looking so glum and depressing. I am proud to be a stokie but things need to change for the better not just for today but also for future generations and make this city great and proud again.

I moved up from London with my father's job in 1966, I was only 14 then. I do remember Stoke as being dirty and slag heaps every where, but when I left school jobs were plentiful on the pot banks, industrial engineering, steel works, Michelin, the coal mines and other types of jobs, but over the years I've seen Stoke on trent gradually go into decline, especially in the Thatcher years when virtually all factorys, mines and other were closed down, some moved abroad and our coal started to come from Poland. Thatcher did not like unions or the working class, which were the backbone for making money for this country, she as all conservatives were a sort of Robin Hood, but in reverse. Rob from the poor and give the rich. I've seen Hanley and Newcastle go from bad to worse, that I don't shop in any of them. There's a good working force in stoke on trent, but alas, know one wants to invest here, so now it's mainly just warehouses and services. It's a shame to see a once prosperous city and jobs for everyone virtually disappear. My happy days were when I used to go to the Place a couple of times a week, but the they ruined that by making it larger. The people here are friendly enough, although they still call me a Cockney, even if I do come from North London and not the east end. Lol

Moved here 3 and a half yrs ago and for a second city, the people are really friendly in spite industrial decline and neglect from local government and businesses . A sense of optimism and good humour on the main, prevails. Still not bad for shops, cafes, restaurants, theatres and a few clubs.

Councils have destroyed the 5 towns, knock stuff down and then leave derelict for years!! The Dunrobin pub in Longton is a prime example, a grand piece of history right there and now gone since 1986!! Nothing done with it and no good reason for demolition!!!😡😡

Stoke on Trent is a strange place as the town centre is called Hanley, and the second town is Newcastle under Lyme. Stoke is the area where the railway station is.

The best and worst things about Stoke on Trent are it's people. Growing up there I met some incredibly intelligent, regardless of their background, people but I left partly through the lack of work and because the people were becoming more and more stupid and, I hate to say it, nasty. I've lived in lots of places in the UK and Europe and found far better placed but also far worse.

My honest opinion on stoke-on-trent as a Stokie, it's a dump hole! There is bugger all work apart from retail due to industries being shut down, majority of the area is run down due to the council not doing their jobs in keeping it maintained, the roads don't exist as they are just potholes, jobs are poorly paid, full of druggies and bums because the benefit system is so good that people would actually be out of pocket if they worked full time, the police don't give a damn about stopping crime unless it's just to give a covid fine, elderly are rude and obnoxious, full of students who think the world owes them everything and their politics is the only way the world have to think (extreme left), social housing (mainly aspire) cannot uphold to their contracts in maintaining buildings to correct standards, the list goes on...... The only good things left about stoke-on-trent...... Is oatcakes and the rich history of Stoke City FC and their manager MoN. 😂
