By request from many TNPrs is a comprehensive AR-15 (or any other tac rifle) scope buying vid, single part. Here I will show you the best value scopes that we have purchased and shot over a period of five years in TNP. Short discussion on irons and reflex sights included but intended for good civilians who have determined a variable power scope will cover most of their needs (it will, discussed). A scope helps make up for old eys, helps indentify your foe, and makes you more precise. Most AR-15s intended beyond for beyond 100 yds can benefit from one. Many specific options given, get your note pad ready. No longer do you have to spend $1000 for an excellent scope that is reliable, tough, lightweight, and bright. I concentrate on mid-range (50m-300m) options that won't break your wallet and that will still impress you.///////////////////////////////////I rec' www.natchezss.com for optics buying. alpha numeric Oh yeah....I'll see if I can get that loaded into a separate vid for ease of reference. An interesting AR build guide would be kinda cool to show all the ones we've run around here. Generally, 18" barrels and midlength gas systems seem to take it. -Doodle

757optim It is, and it is a shame. I'd like to have the extra two inches, but how much of a difference does it make in accuracy, muzzle velocity and weight? I run a Smith, with a stock 16in floated barrel and at 100 yards and less, I can draw pictures on paper. I've never stretched it out though. If I can find that Pony Express maybe I'll see what 16 inches and I are capable of.

For me, the very best AR optics are hands down, the Trijicon ACOGs in the 4x32 configs. They're unbelievably simple, light weight, almost indestructible and enjoy fantastic light transmission. I'm not in to variable 1-4x. Just seems too complicated and long when you could simplify it with an ACOG. But thats just my opinion. I basically like to stick with what the military uses but I'm not into red dot sights, so the most obvious option for me are the ACOGs.
@TheDoug76
@TheDoug76 10 жыл бұрын
I went through the gamut of scopes and red dots. My main POU is hunting with my AR, primarily wild hogs, and practically all shots are within 100yds. But it's often getting dim when they come out, so a scope works best. But I like the FOV provided by a red dot. So I split the difference, and went with a fixed power, low power scope. I chose the Nikon P 223 3x32, built for the AR carbine. I'm very happy with it. It does all I need, and still gives me beyond 100yd capability.

I absolutely love the Burris 2-7 Compact on my Mini-14, at 2x it's good for CQB and on out to 7x it's good to 300yds easy. Optics are totally clear and crisp.

I actually bought the LWRC M6A2 in black because of your review on it and how much you praised it. It also came with the single piece bolt carrier and after a long time on lay away I finally got an ACOG (Ta31F-RMR) on top. The 4x32 ACOG , with the ability to shoot with both eyes open (BAC), gives the perfect balance between CQB and mid range shooting. Beyond that it has the RMR for quick acquisition at close range. Most incredible rifle setup I have ever put my hands on. I now understand why they both cost so much. Thanks for the reviews, they have helped me to get the correct equipment without spending too much on equipment just to find out it is not right for me.

nutnfancy Nutn, what eye relief is in your opinion the ideal eye relief for a midrange rifle set up 0-300yrds? Ive been looking at the Vortex 1.75-5x32 diamondback. Its 3.5-3.7" eye relieve and 12.8ozs. Also been looking at the vortex strike eagle 1-6x24x. 17.6ozs with lighted reticle the is also etched. Good option you think? thank you also what one piece mounts do you recommend ? thanks again

For the medium range category of scopes I've been pretty impressed with the Nikon fixed 3X P-223. I found one at a pawnshop for $90, and I've been liking it a lot. Its simple and it works. It seems to offer excellent optical clarity, a BDC reticle, and good eye relief. I like to think of it as my poor man's ACOG.

I've been having a Leupold Mark AR on my AR-15. 3 x 9 with the dials "calibrated" for 55 grain .223 for $400. After shooting through that leupold, I don't think I will go to other brands when it comes to actual scopes. The clarity was out of this world. I see why my dad always had a leupold on his deer rifle. They are just so CLEAR.

I just shot my 16 inch barrel AR15 at 300 yards the other day for the first time. I only have an eotech on it and was more than pleasantly surprised with my grouping! Don't expect as tight of groups as you will get with a scope, but you can shoot out to 300 easily. Plus with a nice sturdy red dot you can drop the rifle on it and not have to worry about losing zero.

He takes his time and is extremely thorough with his research and reviews. If you want a 5 minute video from some wanna be tactical junkie that reviewed something for 20 mins; go for it. But just know when you watch one of these videos you are getting far better research and information than any other channel out there. I watch A LOTTTTTT of Nutnfancy episodes. For the most part you guys do great, I like the details, etc. BUT...but dude.... You've gotta cut the B.S talking and get to the point. You talk waaaaay to much unnecessary shit....like you're just chatting with yourself. For first 10-12 minutes is sooo boring and stupid talk talk talk... I know you have serious stuff to talk about, so get to it .... Thanks.

I'm happy with my burris AR332 sight. 3x zoom is enough for me and I'm hitting targets at about 500 yards with a 16" barrel. It all depends on what you want to do with your AR and what would work best for you

Thank you! As always, a LOT of info packed into this video! Rifle optics are something that we obviously can spend about as much as we're able and this helps me understand SOME of the reasons why prices vary so widely. I appreciate your work, Nutn!

52 mins of a well done video. GREAT info. I'm a casual weekend shooter and I appreciate the bottom-line-up-front opinions on the wide range of scopes out there. This gave me a lot of brain food to digest when I start thinking about what scope to put on my bolt action.

I think this is very informative and gives a lot of information for shooters on a budget. One small critique is that the Nightforce is criticized for having "critical eye relief" while other cheaper scopes are praised for a range of eye relief. What is completely missed here is that the variable eye relief listed means that the eye relief shifts on these cheap scopes based on your power setting. The Nightforce remains static, and the eye relief is actually better on it than the others. Shoot it.

Just thought I would point out that with an AR15 shooting 55gr fmj ammo you don't need a whole lot of elevation adjustment. Do the math and at 59F at sea level a 55gr round going 2800fps goes subsonic at 650 yards with ~24.6MOA drop. So 50 MOA of adjustment out of a 1" tube will fine. Also a 30mm tube will not let in more light, that's the objective's job, 30mm just gives you more adjustment. Hope this info helps and thanks for all your hard work in the project.

to compensate for the left spin and wind that day. I finally took two good shots at the second redicule and they hit consistently about six inches apart and my third one missed entirely because the wind changed. When I finally calculated the shot I and later I brought another person back and both of us confirmed it was ~1,128 yards for a .30-06. This is damn near impressive for what was a $300 gun with a $200 scope.

I have to thank you again Nutnfancy, you raved so much about your 2x7 scope I gave it a try on my last 3-gun build. I was using 1x4 and that works just fine out to 100yrds but for those 200yrd stop plates the 7x is perfect. I went with Burris and love their ballistic plex, much less busy than others and works at least out to 400yrds. Never have had the time to learn and practice with mil-dots so the Burris method is perfect for targets at known distances. And not having to play with turrets, + +

Something you guys need to look into for an SPR type optic, is the SWFA Super Sniper scope. It's a fixed 10x42, it's got mildot reticle with 1/10 MRAD turrets, its design comes from a gov't contract. 30mm tube. $300. Honestly, the simpler you keep it, the more you will get for your money. The thing is built like an $1100 variable power optic, with glass to compete.

I think the best all around optic for a non "precision" AR is something in the 1-4x or 1-6x family. I have used Leupold and Vortex 1-4x's and a Weaver Tactical 1-5x to shoot out to 600 yards. All of them were great for a close to mid range type AR, but on my SPR, I chose a Weaver Tactical 2-10x for more precision at the mid to longer range shots. The Weaver Tactical series is the very best you can get for under a grand with the Vortex PST series coming in a very close second.

I'm a private military contractor and for a .223, I would not use magnification over 10x. I actually shoot 6x at 300m. Whats important is being able to track your target at that range. A higher power scope is impractical. You need that field of view especially tracking targets moving at higher speeds. 6x is sufficient using tracking or ambushing technique at even 300 meters. For home defense...I don't bother using optics...Iron sights is the choice of most operators at close range.

I liked the RCOs we had in the Marines. Just had to put a piece of electrical tape over the fiber optic to dim the illumination. If you didn't, the chevron would get too fat and make it more difficult to find the tip. a lot of guys would cover it up completely on the range so all you had was a thin black chevron

For getting trigger time, the cheaper the better for me! I'm going to be cleaning after the range anyway, so no worries if its dirty. Just bear in mind that sights need to be adjusted for the load in the mag when its time to shoot. Goes for long guns, too.

most common setup like that is an Aimpoint T-1 or CompM4 with a 3x magnifier with a twist QD mount. Or an Eotech with a flip to side 3x magnifier. Use the Red dot for most CQB to 50-100yd (depending on your vision) & flip the magnifier for targets from 50-300yd. Handy thing about the Aimpoint 3x mount is you can keep it off in your pocket or a pouch until you need it then twist it on. Or you can run a 3-9x24 scope with a small Reflex Red Dot on a 1 o'clock rail mount & cant for CQB shots.

@skyhop 11 жыл бұрын
Where red dots shine is when wearing body armor or shooting from less than ideal positions. If that isn't a concern, go for daylight visible illumination in a scope, use a flip front cover, and learn how to shoot 2 eyes open and how to use it as an OEG.

in the USMC we were required to hit a Echo target at 500m Iron sights. Not saying that optics are not necessary, I have a 3-9 power illumminated scope on mine on a QD that works fantastic, and I use the USMC back up irons with range adjust made by ma-tech. Currently the scope is in the case and a reflex sight is on the rail. The nice thing about that is if the reflex dies the flip up irons allow you to look through the glass with not problems.

I was about to question the lack of Redfield and then you brought one out. They are now produced by Leopold. They have also been around a very long time. I am a Leopold fan but recently purchased a new hunting rifle packaged with a Redfield. I am very impressed with the scope. Before this I would not have considered one however they are now on my list of awesome scopes. I could say I have recently had a similar experience with Bushnel. I always thought they were a lower budget scope. One of my old buds had one and wanted very little for it. I put it on my 22 and wonder why I never owned one before. There are some amazing deals on great products these days. I recently purchased a Barska illuminated 3-9 that has also proven a surprise. Cheap and very clear and bright for my expectations. I am glad you posted this info. It re-enforced my latest experiences with new tech and pricing. Cheers!!!

I know in my heart of hearts I will always be a long distance shooter. I own pistols and have my CPL, and do carry but I LOVE my long range rifles. About two, maybe three years ago now I took my .30-06 out and did some target practice in an area I knew nobody was at. I found a man sized rock about 1,000 yards and I had to shoot over a little river running off the lake. I dialed everything in right, I found that I needed to be about 245 feet off target tall, and about ~200 feet off to the right

I had a trijicon 3.5x TA11HG, I loved it, the .223 ballistic donut. But it wasn't precise, and my rife, a budget LWRC, ie S&W M&P15OR+AApiston system, + VLTOR Emod + Ergo Z-float rail past the gas block + Ergo grip + Magpul Aluminum Winter Trigger guard + Roller Cam Pin + Heavy H3 buffer = $1200 quality piston gun that hasn't had a malfunction yet in 5 years! This rifle is very accurate. The Trijicon was great for close quarters target work and steel plates all the way out to 800 yards, but I know the rifle can shoot a .5 inch group at 100 yards but the low power of the TA11HG and the super bright reticle made it really hard to do precision work. Then I came across the Redfield Revolution, which is made in the USA and is 2-7x33, super clear glass and at 7x I can do precision work all the way out to 600yards which is the limit for the rifle. And the cost of the Redfield is just a fraction of the Trijicon. So I'm running the Redfield now and sold the ACOG. The only thing that I would prefer for the Revolution is a Mildot reticle. The Revolution is super light weight. On my precision rifle, Remington 700p another nice low priced accurate rifle, I have the weaver tactical 3-15x50 FFP EMD reticle, very good glass, under $1000 bucks, rugged, the caps work fine for me, and the mildots are always accurate at any power. A really good budget precision rifle scope.

First, I want to say that this is an awesome video. I am an old school guy that just purchased a Leopold VXR 3-9X50 CDS Firedot to go on my 30-378 Weatherby (Fire Snorter). The only AR 15 platform that I am familiar with is my 2 years in Vietnam with the M-16. My wife has watched way too much Walking Dead and has gotten into Zombie shooters. I bought her a S&W M&P Sport 5.56 mainly because of the low recoil. I didn't really like the 5.56 because I recall the debatable stopping power that it had and still has. It has iron sights which I can't see through anymore. After some research I decided on buying her the Stag Arms 6.8 SPC (Mil-Spec). I want to use the 5.56 as a learning tool for her, but want to build the 6.8 for both short and long range shooting. I have been looking at compact scopes (2-7X40 or 3-9X40) with illumination and the pop up reticle, or whatever you call that top mount gadget. Based on the above what can you recommend? Again, thank you for the great video.

I love my 6.8 SPC, I just need to go out and bu a shitload of ammunition, but I will and do plan on getting a 5.56 barrel or upper so I can shoot the cheaper ammunition. I see everything on these videos and I know now that the people who do the bulk of these videos spent time in the military, they spent time in some police unit. They now have money, expertise to do these kinds of videos. I had a video back on how to shoot and do some CQB but I am thankful there are other people doing these.

I put an ACOP TA11 on an AR and it's a great optic. My favorite though is the military grade Hensodlt ZF-24. It's a compact rugged scope with fantastic optics. They pop up on various sites for around $400/450. I set up mine on an ARMS throw lever mount and to me it's the perfect AR scope.

I am always researching the topic this video covers. It's this simple guys... If you need a tough scope that's fast, get an acog in the magnification you need. The TA33 or TA11 should cover everything you will ever need, if that's too much magnification, a TA44SG-10 is amazing. If you don't need durability, get a HUNTING optic, I have used a leupold VXR 2-7 for a long time with success. It's still far faster for me than an aimpoint, and it was only $420.

This is also why the military designates different "point target" ranges for both the M16 and M4, with the M4 being shorter. Both are capable at hitting a man sized target at 500m but the groupings will be worse due to barrel length with the M4.

Leatherwood / Hi-Lux 1-4x24 CMR optic I have had for over a year now and it's awesome! It's as close to a true 1 power as I have seen on the 1-4x range. It has great glass for the money and has illuminated reticle, so on 1x it's a red dot for CQB and 4x to get out 100-200 yards too. Has BDC for the AR15 and zero stop on the elevation turret. When I bought mine, it was $300 so it is a great value too. You can spend $800-900 or more easily and in now way get a scope that's 3 times better than the CMR. Awesome optic all the way around!

I bought a Vortex Crossfire 2 4-12 on my AR for shooting out to 400 and it is perfect. I think they can be picked up for $180ish without rings. 4x works for sub 100 yards, 12x with BDC reticule makes it so easy for longer range shots.
