"Precision AR-15: Concept SPR" by Nutnfancy

The SPR Concept has validity. A lightweight 5.56mm 18" barreled precision AR-15 or M16 variant rifle will offer somewhat improved ballistics, more lethality, and perhaps better precision. Most identify with the SPR as the US Army or US Navy Crane produced Mark 12 SPR in its various iterations. "Concept SPR" begins with an interesting discussion on the Special Purpose AR-15/M16 Rifle and its application, delineating fact from fiction on the SPR. Special emphasis is placed on the limitations of the .223/5.56mm cartridge in long range engagements. I concentrate my efforts and build is in Real World Application of the Special Purpose Rifle; gladly abandoning any attempt to duplicate a Mk 12 in the process. I am not in agreement with several of the component choices of the Mk 12 based on both cost and ergonomic considerations. Moreover I remain a non-worshiper of military adoptions realizing the innovative and unconstrained civilian market is superior in almost all respects. Instead I look to lightness, accuracy, durability, and top shelf ergonomics in the modifications of this rifle. This version of a TNP SPR, built on the Sabre Defense SPR #90116 model, achieves all of that as shown and weighs in at 6 lbs 14 oz with BUIS. This below most other 16" barreled AR-15 carbines. Components are shown and discussed in detail and its two years of shooting performance in TNP is the foundation of the review. Some will spend extraordinary levels of money to replicate a military Mk 12 Mod 0 or 1. I consider this a fool's errand unless the individual throws out the Second Kind of Cool flag (criticisms off limits then). You'd be better off to focus your build along this concepts shown here. In terms of capabilities and ergonomics, this super lightweight, fast, reliable, and accurate SPR meets and/or surpasses the vaunted Mk 12.//////////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale on TNP SPR: 10 out of 10

I still love the 20" barrel with fixed stock. You dont see it very much because its not as cool looking as all the others. I hate when you ask for a 20" at a gun shop they look you and ask why would you want that over a 16"/18". I say its what I shot as a Marine then they like oh ok. I know what it can do and I trust it. Just keep it clean. Every Marine can hit a man sized target at 500 yards with iron sights. Cant wait to start my next build.

coolhomedog 18 inch barrel is trendy right now lol. its for people who recognize the benefits of a longer barrel, but don't want to accept that the 20" barrel was right the first time (at least ballistics speaking). Nutn brings up good ideas some times, but he tends to be very "hip" with the industry, and that's not always good. ar15 rifles aren't cool enough, so carbines are in. I understand that there is a place for carbines, but they are definitely not a catch all platform that it seems like everyone claims (especially not in 5.56); I for one have never been overly impressed with the m4. the industry has come up with some good stuff over the years, but I see an increasing amount of gimmicky crap (gear) / "training" being pushed. All you need for a DMR is a good accurate rifle, a good rifleman, and some decent glass (if you can get it).

wildrangeringreen It's funny that you mention he's "hip" in the industry, because lately I've been noticing a lot of stuff that crops up on TNP quickly coming in vogue elsewhere in the KZbin gun community. When he did that review of the Canik TP9? It was IMMEDIATELY on every other KZbin channel. Stock dropped. Prices went up. He did the review of the C93 Sporter, stock dropped, prices went up. I think he might be setting the hip, not following it, in a lot of ways. For my applications, I don't need anything other than a 16" carbine. I live in Michigan, where we don't have a lot of open spaces that aren't wooded. a realistic engagement distance, for me, is less than 300 yards maximum, likely less than 150 yards. I can understand why people, especially people in wooded or urban areas, use the shorter barrel lengths. However, I'm also realistic, and if I lived in Utah, or Idaho, or Colorado, I would opt for a lengthier barrel to maximize my distance. You can run around in circles talking about optimal builds for different situations, but it really boils down to if it works for you, and a 16" carbine usually does for most people.

Ive recently built an SPR inspired by this video. Biggest difference, mines a 16" barrel. BCM Enhanced Lightweight with a 13" KMR. Talk about SAWC, the friggin upper weighs 3lbs... Just put a leupold ar mark 1 3-9x40 (got a good deal on it, $250 with some leu. rings) Another super lightweight component for what you get 12 oz!!! I think you would really like that scope nutn. Comes in a 4-14x variation too but get ready to spend an extra $300... wasnt worth it to me. Also weighs an additional 2 point something ozs. Anywho keep up the good work nutnfancy, You keep giving me data points ill keep giving u thumbs up.

I put that same Mark AR scope on my coyote build. Lo-Pro DPMS 16" heavy barrel, talk about heavy though. 10 lbs on the nuts with the Harris bi-pod, but schwackin yotes out at 200yds and being able to send follow-up shots quick with no recoil is my tradeoff!

Anndd the video should end abruptly right there because most of us with AR carbines can just throw a scope on it and call it good. A 2 inch barrel increase is truly marginal considering the .223 max eff range and also because size, weight and mobility is the goal of the carbine rifle. Chamber a rifle like this in 7.62 and you have a big winner (CSASS).

I've had my version of an SPR for years now and it's not far from his. I do run an 18in, 7 twist SS fluted Shilen match barrel that was a blank barrel. I had it worked by a guy who does awesome work on barrels and builds plenty of nice custom precision rifles. I went with billet receivers, 3.5lbs adjustable Jard trigger (which I run on every AR I own as they're awesome) 15in Troy alpha rail, custom made brake/flash hider that's threaded so I can screw a suppressor on quickly with an ACS-L buttstock. I've got my hand loads as close as I can get them too MK 262 mod1 rounds as I own quite a few, then worked my hand loads close to that round and to what the rifle likes. With the 77gr's, either my hand loads or the MK 262's, shooting in the prone with a bipod and a shooter sock, it's a sub MOA rifle and I feel confident too 700m max with the rifle, which I've heard of an confirmed kill using the 77gr's @ 864m in azzcrackastain and I know guys that's shot 1000yrds with the same combo, but that was under perfect weather conditions, (it's not ideal). When I first joined the Army (11B) we would shoot out too 500m with iron sights from an M16a2 and M4's, then came optics which made everything easier. The SPR is great all around weapon. If you're gonna build one, build it right, use the right ammo and you'll be shocked at the wound cavity a 77gr round will do... If I haven't had seen what it does to flesh with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. If the Army used 77gr ammo instead of 62gr, it would stop all the 22cal size holes going into bad guys, just to have them run off unless you hit the brain stem or spinal cord. I can vouch for the new M855A1's, but the M855's suck. Oh yeah, I run a 2.5-12x for optics.. Mil-Mil, illuminated reticle so it works well for everything. I hate fixed stocks, especially if I have a rack on as the armor makes it a bitch too get the proper LOP.

longtime follower. I watched this video countless times along with a few others to build my first AR build, specifically a SPR. I watched the ounces in fear of the lbs. I also break the bank on the build. Happy to say i built a 18" non fluted SPR that came in at 115oz (no glass, no mount, no mag). I'm very happy with build and keep it minimalist as possible for POU. The DMR actually started out as a upper receiver issued to platoon marksmen to give added ranged precision fire capabilities. It later evolved into a dedicated rifle. Because it was issued as a receiver there are numerous variations of the rifle known as the DMR. The dedicated rifle was first introduced in SOCOM units like SEALs and Army special forces units. It has since been issued to Army scout snipers in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is simply an amazing demo of the .223 and the AR platform. Simply amazing. There is no doubt that this design achieves a high degree of accuracy while utilizing light weight materials in design. The 5.56 cartridge, at approx 1800 Joules +/- provides a flat trajectory which lends itself well to a DMR setup such as this (collimator). The consistency of shooting over 300 meters in this demo is rarely documented on youtube videos with this degree of attention to detail. ~An AK74 shooter.

As an SDM in the army, we had to take the 5.56 out to 600m both with iron sights and optics. Known and unknown distance. Yes you have to know what the wind is doing the very second you send a round but it's not all that hard to get the hang of. Our final qual was shooting out to 600m unknown distance and we had a 15-20mph wind that day. Once you learn your rifle and how to call wind, it becomes second nature

Thank you! I'm sure your DPMS is a great gun, hang on to it. Just throw on a Troy Alpha rail when you get money. You'll need a low profile gas block and perhaps BUIS to complete. I remained amazed at how much difference the Alpha rail makes. It also "rescued" the RRA Elite Operator 2, reviewed.

Totally agree about the hand guard rail system. The only one maybe necessary full length is on top. Lightens the guns and reduces the width of the hand guard, and is comfortable in the hand, and no rail covers required. I installed one on my AR, love it.

Nobody is doubting the accuracy of the M-16/M-4 with iron sights - it's a fantastic shooter. However, adding a match barrel, good glass, and heavy grain match 5.56 loads gives you the same accuracy and consistency you just described, but at 2 and 3 times the distance you were shooting at. That's where the MK12/SPR really shines.

I always enjoy your videos , The Army came up with the SPR for " Sniper work " for the squad usage of the D.M. One of the tests was out of a hovering helo into a window 10x12inches .But too much vibration . But for that usage the 20 inch M-16 rifle is just as handy

the filipinos have a similar concept, it called the mssr (marine scout sniper rifle), basically an upgraded m16 (scope, better barrel, free floating barrel and a bipod). they use it for up to 800 meters. i think the mssr has been there for a longer time than the mk12

Great video. For those watching, keep in mind that the extra 2" on the 18" barrel do give on average an extra 50 FPS in muzzle velocity (about 25 FPS per inch), however, at 300 yards that only equates to about two-thirds an inch of less drop, a third an inch of less wind drift in a 10 MPH wind, and 20 more ft/lbs of energy delivered to the target (source JBM ballistics, 3000ft elev, PMC .223 FMJ load at 2950 and 3000 fps). I think consideration should first be given to shooting a stouter load, eg. upgrading from PMC Bronze .223 to XM193, which can give you a much larger increase in muzzle velocity. Especially if you already have a 16" barrel that you're happy with or have difficulty finding 18" barrels.

I dont like the components on the Mk12.... used a mod 1 in baghdad, while i love the concept and it works well for what it is designed for, when using mk262 which the 18 inch barrel offers vast improvement over the 14.5 inch barrel (remember military) in terms of effective range and is still nice compact and capable enough for HALO insertion, it still has plenty of potential on target up to around 500m. It was intended for precision fire while maintaining a small unit fluidity. People carrying same mags using same ammunition (mk262) has a more versatile and fluid dynamic in the battlefield. It is great for taking out trip men (guys triggering IEDs) MGs and the like. The military rifle and ammunition is just under 1 moa. My own SPR with handloads is under 3/4. I also didnt use anything that the military mk12 uses. Mine weighs 7-14 the one i was issued overseas with can and scope was near 14. I used a nitrided douglass barrel, rifle length gas, and for now a YHM can... 100% VA rating doesnt pay enough for a better can right now lol

Good video! I like your comment about a DI gun vs a piston gun. I have been shooting the AR-15/M-16/A-4, etc... since 1982. I shot this gun in competition and in combat, as well as in civilian life. I have a Walmart-bought Olympic Arms stock M-4 with 640 documented russian steel cased ammo fired, with no malfunctions and no cleaning whatover . I have had scant problems with a DI gun. Just maintain the piece!!! No problem. I had my AK-47 jam two months ago!!!! Yep, failure to eject. Imagine that, a piston gun that has a malfunction. Egads!!!!! Not a competitor, I just shoot lots of guns about 42 months out of the year. Cheers, Boys!!!

I recently picked up a DDMk12, which is obviously their interpretation of the mk12. It has a CHFSS 16" barrel, which makes the the gun very front heavy with the addition of a bipod. I chose a TA11F for my optic, and it is as far back on the rail as I could put it (it has great eye relief, but I was trying to balance the weight a bit). However, with all of that said, I can shoot from standing at 100 yrds with pretty good accuracy (pretty good to me was about 2-2.5" groups; shot 200 rounds). Firing from prone using the bipod, I feel comfortable saying that I could actually drive tacks with it.

Did the same in 2010 with same rifle and distance. Only thing different is we were shooting known distances with known wind speed and direction... Things are different when you're up against a rock, or laying in the bushes trying to hit a man sized target at ~500m. Putting an ACOG with 4x magnification or any other magnified optic with range estimation built in is VERY handy when you're in the middle of nowhere trying to get lead on target. Semper Fi

I put a troy alpha rail on my AR-15 and it lightened the whole system up tremendously. It also, like Nutn says, is user configurable, and so I only have the rails on it that I need and I love it. the flip up front sight comes with the rail built right in too, and it free floats the barrel. I can't say enough good things about it.

Just placed an order for an 18" Mid-Length 1-8" Rainier Select SS barrel with 5R polygonal rifling, it has the most PERFECT profile, goes from a FULL Medium Contour/ .875 to .750 at the gas block and then tapers gently to around .675-.700 at the last 3"-4". Exact same weight as a 16" Medium Contour..DROOL MUCH, gonna put that on a Vltor MUR 1 receiver on a Spikes Multi-Cal 'Punisher' lower, so excited about that build!! Looking at RRA 2-stage trigger and another Spikes FailZero coat BCG. YES!!

Nutn that is a truly sweet gun, but changing out so many components on what was already an expensive gun seems like a bad value too me. If you had started with a cheaper model, or better yet build the gun from the ground up yourself I bet you could get the same gun for well under 1500 (minus glass).

For anyone that's interested, if you have a rifle length gas system on an 18 inch barrel the velocity loss over a 20 inch barrel with 55 grain fmj is like 9 fps. once the bullet passes the gas port the pressure drops off drastically, hence the negligible velocity loss. good video nutn

Was thinking same thing, they come with a very trim and user configurable....Samson rail I think, my local shop had one I was OGLING, and it's LIGHT! I am SOO glad Troy hit it out of the park with the TRX, think it only adds about 3 ounces over a polymer mid-length rail! Seems like a great gun, (but an assembled rifle is gonna cost QUITE a bit more, glad I built my own BCM/Spikes) like seeing how accurate a C.L.'d barrel can be, amazes me. PISTON GOIN DOWN, MID-LENGTHS' IN TOWN! Great vid!

Just wanted to give some data points here. The 5.56 was designed to tumble on impact. The issue with 14-16 in barrels is the m855 leaves teh barrel at subpar velocities to create effective tumbling upon impact. This is one of the issues the 77gr was suppose to solve. The longer barrels, 18-22in, can keep the bullet above 3000 ft/s at longer ranges, allowing the bullet to effectively tumble upon impact. So the velocity difference between 16 and 18in is 2900ft/s to 3100ft/s thus the bullet tumbles

Would love to build my own mk-12 SPR kinda rifle, and throw a surpressor on it. I live near a range, where the longest we can shoot is 300 meters, and i think for 300 meters it'd be awesome to have a 223 / 556 rifle. And of course, just throwing the surpressor in there, because i can haha. But, you gotta be 21 to own semi-autos here in denmark, so i'm gonna have to wait a little while.

Gratitude for a gun vid. I also built a Mk12-inspired Stoner Special. The barrel is key. I went with a Lothar Walther, mid-length, .75-inch. I have recorded a solid 150fps increase in MV vs my 16.5-inch SIG 556 in any cartridge I care to shoot though them. Mine is a bit different since I am a Fat Old Fart. Since the longest look in my area is 300 meters, I went with a PRS stock. I don't run about any more. My glass is a Leupold LRT with the TMR reticle. You can't hit what you can't see.

If you're not satisfied with the 5.56 performance past 300 yards, I can understand, but on the issue of weight, there's no denying that you get more rounds per pound. Go 7.62 NATO? Ouchy in the rucksack. What is the right balance for the SPR concept? Do we go 6.5 Grendel?

I didnt bother trying to replicate a Mk12. I simply assembled a C3 defense lover receiver. I don't have the space to explain why I love this lower. Rather than build an upper, I purchased a Rock River Arms Predator pursuit upper. I didn't bother with any fancy butt stock. Just simple A2. added a vortex optic and an SWFA S.S.A.L.T(single solution AR light tactical) mount and called it done. with my 75 BTHP hand load I can hit anything I can see from the muzzle to 700 yards. This is my Rifle....

I think, for me and my new upcoming build, that an 18", rifle-length gas system, 'SPR style' barrel a 410 SS bbl with a 1-8" twist is IDEAL. Like the other barrel Sabre Defence offered was a 410 1-8" bbl, you REALLY get the entire spectrum of ammunition capabilities, will shoot 55 grain's AND 77 grain's very accurately, probably my favorite bbl twist rate. Love 1-9, love 1-7, different strokes for different folks, but the 1-8 gives both!......... Need to call BCM 4 their 18" 1-8 410SS bbl!

I swear TNP snooped inside my safe with that build. Only difference is that my upper is a RRA ATH 18" and an FDE CTR (not black). Mine will shoot 3/4" all day with a few 1/2'' occassionaly (100yds). i recall a monsoon with high wind and we had to qualify in Okinawa Japan in 1988 when i was a Lance Corporal, and i shot EXPERT. and was getting hits on target in "FULL VALUE WIND" with the range flags dancing all over the place.. but i still made great hits consistently as did the majority of my Battery that qualified that week. these were M16A2'S with Iron sights no fancy high speed whiz bang optics. just Marksmanship

The SPR typically sports a muzzle brake, rifle length gas system, and a rifle/A5 receiver extension and spring/buffer. The goal is a controllable rifle. Just food for thought. I've shot standard carbines with high power glass side by side with a true SPR clone (BCM Mk12) and the latter is far, far preferable.

Just using match sights, a match barrel, and a well prepped trigger group on my DPMS match rifle and MK262mod0 ammo blew me away. I never thought I could be that accurate at 600 yards with an AR-15. Shocked the hell out of me during my first CMP match, I still suck, but when I do my job, the gun puts the shot exactly where it should be, and that's a crappy DPMS.

The SPR is a pretty interesting concept for sure. I saw a guy at my gun club about a year ago that had a DPMS AR chambered in 6.5 x 55 Swedish. Was shooting really good groups at 300 yards. Had a fluted barrel at 18" that was free floated. A really nice rifle. Great video and as always I really appreciate the time you take to produce these

In Indochina we used a scoped Springfield 03-A3. An excellent and deadly rifle out to 500 yards. Why in these modern times converting an assault rifle into a sniper rifle is a mystery. All you gotta do is be there first. You win.

I've been wanting a faster twist barrel so I can work up some long-range loads with the high BC bullets. If I step up to an 18" from my 16", my ballistic software indicates that another 100fps that I MIGHT get from the extra 2" only extends the supersonic range by ~40yds. I'd have to single feed these loads either way. The mag length is the true limitation of this platform's capabilities! I'll embrace its limitations and stick with a 16" barrel. Still a 1000yd supersonic range load, however ;-)

nutn, If you want a GREAT solution to mounting a bipod to the Alpha rail, take a look at the QD stud that Noveske offers: at less than $7, the price is right and it allows the bipod to sit flush with the rail which adds stability. I have one and it is rock solid.

The 20" rifle gas system is excellent, mid-length close behind. Even the 16" carbine, though departure from the original, works extremely well, proven in 1000s of SA rds here in TNP. Watch my philosophy vid on DI vs Piston, it's all there. Posted it three years ago. The LaRue OBR is $2245 and it's DI. John Paul over at JP Rifles uses DI for his most popular guns, no complaints. Hmmmm. I wonder what that says. Piston good too but I performance HERE shows DI guns run xlnt yr after yr.

MILDOT adjustments are feasible and were the standard in Sniper school classes about 8 or 10 years ago so yes the graduates from a good sniper course should completely be well versed in how to do a "MIL DOT HOLD" to achieve hit's at various ranges.

I hate that dudes spend all this money for a gun that shoots a .223 and act like they are gonna be doing explosive headshots at a 1000 yards. In your dreams man. I love the idea of an accurate .223 with precision as the POU but dont kid yourself. Everything has limitations and practicalities. that is why the POU is so important. Great review Nutnfancy. I really appreciate your emphasis on weight saving. I wish I had discovered your videos before I built my precision AR. I have a varmint rifle I put together with Rock River stuff, PRS from magpul, etc. With optics and bipod that sucker is just over 14 pounds on the ups scale at work. I bought it one part at a time over about a year,(poor man style) and I didn't realize the trouble I was getting into weight-wise. It's sub moa with 60 grain v-max loads and hell on gophers

M16 A1 is 6.5 lbs naked. 7.96 lbs loaded with sling. 3,250 fps with M193 ball, 1300 ft-lbs. Sustained rate of fire: 12 to 15 rounds per minute. It has no glass but blows away the SPR in velocity and weight. Build it with a flat top and match barrel with no forward assist and bam! Super light super accurate and they called it the meat axe.

agreed, it makes no sense to me either. i think lot of those guys are doing it hoping more gadgets will make them better shots, but they haven't realized if u don't have skills, no gadget will help. I just got my 1st AR (Stag Model 2) and I'm keepin it uber simple. A flashlight, red dot, sling, and maybe a VFG & that's it! no quad rails, just either the std M4 Handaurds or a Magpul MOE handguard. the KISS principle should always be our guide when modding guns for actual defensive use IMO.

Medium weight soft points can retain more lethality at range. I really like 65 gr Sierra Game King. Sure, 5.56mm won't retain as much lethality at distance as 7.62x51mm but it's not as though they turn into Nerf darts at 350m. Any hit on the target is better than not having holes in the bad guy.

You were talking about all the rails. I agree....I also think that they should start going without the full length rail on top of the foreguard. Unless you are running night vision or a Surefire and mounting it on the 12 o'clock position you don't need a full length rail on it. You could add one later if you decided to go that config. I like the carbon fiber foreguards myself.

Oh a trick to line up the alpha rail is to bridge the rail/upper receiver with a carry handle, then tighten the 3 bolts.

I remember reading a while back a review in Tactical Operator (Shooting Times) saying that the Mod 0 had a continuous rail on top vs the Mod 1 so the scope could be better placed on the rail. The author criticized the Mod 1 design. That was about the biggest feature I can remember.

Also, the PMC X-TAC 62 grain LAP's are really just M855's, and that is what the military used till newest M855A1, and it's steel core is VERY HARD to get the concentric, which is why the barrel accuracy requirement's for the M16 is like 3"-4" from the factory. Instead of PMC .223 or X-TAC LAP, try the 5.56 XM193, it's more accurate and has more velocity. Might not buck wind as much, but it's uniform since it has no steel core. X-Tac/M855 is just M.O.Man, XM193 is usually 1MOA w/1-7 better w/1-9!

Try a Midwest Industries rail. I forget which model, but it is a user configurable with a dedicated full length rail at the 12' oclock position. Comes in at 7 oz for a carbine length and 9 oz for mid length. Here's the kicker... $150, made in the heart of the USA... WISCONSIN! Give em' a look.

Check out his video on the Smith and Wesson M&P15 Sport. They also make a version with a factory installed quad rail and Magpul BIUS (back-up-iron-sights). The quad rail version is known as the M&P15T. They also make state specific compliant models. I have a California complaint M&P15T with about 1500 rounds through it and I love it. The only comlaint I have (and Nutfancy disagrees with me here), is that it's a heavy rifle. It has a heavy barrel which makes the front end very heavy.

I agree, if you want to shoot groups and measure you should use the good ammo. And if you reload that is find and dandy. But in the context of the video, testing the rifle and using it in the philosophy you intend to employ it I don't think it is necessary. If you want to take the time to load up a couple hundered rounds or more of good stuff and let me blast through it, be my guest. But for what Nutnfancy is doing I do not disagree that using 55 gr. is the way to go. Especially if buying bulk.

Great job. You are right the SPR has validity and purpose within reason. I choose to go with the 7.62 AR platform instead of the 5.56 for longer ranges. IMHO just a much better option all the way around. But the way you have configured your rifle opens up a lot of options and is a good practical choice for many people. Nutn, my POU for an SPR actually starts with a different SPC. There is too much data showing a 556 cartridge just doesn't do the job so I bought a 6.8 topped with an ACOG, I would bet my life on that setup. There was little difference between this setup and carrying my M16, ammo and all. I'm using Silver State Armory 6.8 110gr Nosler Accubond which has proven to be very accurate in my Wilson Combat rifle.

Mine is at 7lbs without glass. This is with the m16 style bcg, 18" RA medcon select barrel, troy alpha 11" rail, yhm gasblock, compensator and front sight, milspec charging handle. The lower is a cmmg lpk, milspec buffer tube with CTR stock.
