I feel like a light pollution map is a pretty accurate way of doing this. The darkest region of the state also probably has the least people and the least development. You could go to the middle of a cornfield where no one is around but i would still consider it near stuff since it is human developed; a light pollution map would still show unpopulated developed areas having some light

@@jonathansykes4986 it is interesting that you can clearly see some country borders just from the light pollution. North Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan all have their neighbors lit up right to the border, but then their own countries are dark. Seems like the correlation between these countries is they are communist or dictatorships/monarchies until recently or still are.

I'm from Wyoming, and while I had admittedly not visited Araminto, it's fascinating how many ghost towns there are from the oil booms and busts, among other things. It's definitely sad, but also really intriguing. My parents took us on a "see the state" road trip as a kid about 20 years ago and I learned so much!

Earlier in the 1960's my father, who was a minister, held Summer religious revivals in Doe Hill, which is an even smaller town in Highland County. On another occasion in the early 1970's I drove through Highland County returning home to Staunton very early in the morning after playing in a band at a dance in West Virginia and only encountered one other car on the road in the whole county. Very interesting video. It seems like some entries are more subjective based on the geologic/ecologic/economic status of a part of the state, and others are based more on statistics. I'd love to see a brief look at the least densely populated county in each state and see how that compares with the entries in a video like this one. Also, since you just recently took a drive through New England, you might appreciate this. Suffolk County, in Massachusetts, home to Boston, has a population density of 13,879/sq mi. I recently moved to Franklin County, which is the second-least-densely populated county in Massachusetts, with a density of only 100.5 per sq. mi. In this video, for Massachusetts, you mentioned Barre, which is right by the Quabbin Reservoir, which is a hotspot for day-hikers and casual boaters. It has a population of just over 5000 and is located in Worcester County, which has a population density of 536 per sq. mi. It's a common town to pass through if you're visiting the Quabbin from Worcester, Holden, or Rutland, so it gets fairly crowded in the spring and summer. If I had to pick a town to represent Massachusetts, I'd go with Rowe, located in western Franklin County.

I live just down the road from Lowville, NY (sometimes we call it 'Cowville') and think it's a great choice. The population drops off very quickly as you ascend up to the Tug Hill to the east or into the Adirondack Park to the west, although it does get quite busy in the winter with snowmobilers seeking lake effect snow. Personally I would say the northwestern Adirondacks feel even more remote, with places like Degrasse, Santa Clara, Oswegatchie, and especially Newton Falls feeling closer to ghost towns surrounded by large tracts of not-so-touristed wilderness. Honorable mention: 30 miles east of Lowville, at the end of Stillwater Reservoir, you'll find the hamlet of Beaver River. There's still a handful of permanent residents, and it's not even connected to the road system! The only way to reach it is by boat, snowmobile, or a 7 mile hiking trail.

This channel has made me appreciate how dense my home state of Ohio actually is. I always remember people saying they live in the middle of nowhere growing up but in reality there’s a lot of people in the rural areas of Ohio compared to the rest of the country. One would have to travel to a park or the really remote parts of Appalachian Ohio to not at least be looking at one homestead in your driving sight.

Fellow Ohioan here. I had the same experience growing up, being led to believe that Ohio is the middle of nowhere and nothing but a flyover state - That couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re 7th in population and it’s not because we have a NYC or a Chicago. Yes, we have some sizable cities, but our population is truly dispersed very well for our size. We have a lot to offer in most areas of the state, it makes a lot of sense.

I grew up in southeast Ohio which is usually considered the most rural area along some of northwest Ohio. Even so I think it has about a million people scattered in lots of small towns. I probably would have picked Vinton county for this list myself. Morgan county could make a claim too but Malta/McConnellsville feel like a decent sized town taken together.

I love this series! My next idea for a video like this would be most popular, or visited parks in each state, or you could go a little deeper and pick a off the beaten in Trail low visited park. That’s nonetheless beautiful. For example, north cascades national park in Washington doesn’t get near the number of visitors as Mount Rainier or Olympic.

I live in New Mexico now in Hidalgo County (the bootheel). I thought sure we would get picked for this list....but you managed to find a less populated county! Creative video as always, Geography king! However, I must make a correction! Up here in Massachusetts, we aren’t much like your native south: we have no townships-just towns and cities. So as strange as it might sound, Barre is just called Barre, like the guy. However, at its founding it may have been referred to as a township, but that terminology has become colloquially defunct. Unlike Southern New England, though, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire do have townships, and they are usually unorganized and technically unincorporated. Also, you’d be surprised how many places on Cape Cod are free of tourists year-round. Typically the outer Cape before you reach North Truro and Provincetown can be more or less empty away from the beaches, Route 6, and trails and camping grounds. Towns like Truro and Wellfleet are more expansive than they seem, so it can be easy to avoid these areas. And forget about it in the winter: you may not see a soul the whole time. But I must say, even just avoiding people in Massachusetts can be a seasonal endeavor. However, Central Mass where Barre is located definitely gets basically no tourists ever and isn’t as populated as the eastern part of the state.

For Texas, I would say King County, county seat Guthrie (along US 82 between Wichita Falls and Lubbock) or Kent County, county seat Jayton (on US 380 southeast of Lubbock). Incredibly desolate and miles from anything. Honestly, just about all of US 380 between Post and Graham is pretty otherworldly.

What a great idea for a video . . . I'm definitely looking forward to this one, and will comment as I watch. . . . . Wow, With over 3000 counties in the US, it was interesting to see that one of our least celebrated presidents, Warren Harding, was the namesake of two of the counties that showed up on your list.. . . . I also wonder, with so many of these towns near state borders (for understandable reasons) I wonder what two points on your list are the closest to each other? . . . . And you said it, you (or the alphabet) saved the best for last!

I was expecting to see Frenchglen, OR on the list and i saw Frenchglen, OR on the list. Good job sir. There is an interesting story about how the founder got such a massive tract of land. The state was basically giving away land if it was swamp and he reported he had traversed this entire SE Oregon area while in a boat, thus receiving the land. The boat he was in was sitting in his horse-drawn wagon on dry land, though.

I loved the Alvord. When I went through Fields, a plane landed on the highway and taxied up to the store while I was gassing up. Fields has the only non-ethanol gas for hundreds of miles around and pilots regularly stop to gas up there. Almost.....almost moved to Jordan Valley when I retired. But the lack of medical facilities and like he said, two hours one way to get groceries, deterred me.

I think we drove through Monterey, VA not too many years ago trying to get to Snowshoe Resort when we had some snow issues on a road further north. Finally, I don't think I've ever been to Arthur, NE, but I did notice it being the only town in the county many years ago. It is possible, I was there long ago with my grandfather while he was working, or drove through it with my grandparents.

Lol I KNEW you’d pick Highland County for Virginia. My grandparents bought 138 acres (half a mountain and beautiful rolling hills) in highland County in the 1980s. And ever since then it’s been the summer/fall getaway for our entire extended family. It truly is the most gorgeous scenery I’ve ever seen. It’s my favorite place on earth. If you didn’t know, Highland County’s nickname is “Little Switzerland” because of the breathtaking mountain scenery in the area. Also, one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to is in downtown Monterey. High’s Restaurant is phenomenal and if you look online you’ll see hundreds of 5 star reviews from all over the country. Pretty insane for a restaurant in a town with only 140 people. There are 5 times the amount of reviews as there are residents in town. It looks like a typical small town joint, but the staff there really knock it out of the park. It’s almost inexplicable how good the food is there. People who travel across the eastern seaboard go out of their way to take the scenic route to travel through highland county to see the landscape and to eat there hahaha Another interesting fact about Highland County is that while TODAY the population currently is around 2,000 people, back during the civil war the population was closer to 4,000. It’s one of those few places in the US that is VASTLY less populated today, compared to the 1860s

This was a fun video. I disagree with you about CT, though. True, it's hard to find anyplace really isolated in southern New England, but I'd have picked someplace in northeastern CT, e.g. Woodstock or Ashford. Litchfield County just has too many vacation homes. Summer weekends the traffic there can be a pain. Even more so during leaf-peeping season.

North-central Pennsylvania is so desolate that it has an International Dark Sky Park. Cherry Springs State Park is so dark that, on a clear night, not only can you see the Milky Way galaxy with the naked eye, but you can also see zodiacal light ("false dawn") near the horizon, and "gegenschein" at the antisolar point in the night sky. The worst tornado outbreak in Pennsylvania history produced a violent, long-track, two-mile-wide F4 tornado that screamed for 70 miles across the Moshannon and Sproul State Forests in north-central Pennsylvania on May 31, 1985. After destroying a shed and another small building in the first mile of its path, the only other building the tornado hit in the next 69 miles was a cabin. Otherwise, nothing but trees, and the occasional power line near the few roads it crossed. Take a drive on PA 144 from near Snow Shoe to Renovo, and there's literally nothing for more than 30 miles. The few roads that intersect it aren't even paved, and at one point the nearest paved road is eight miles away. Even Google hasn't bothered sending Street View that way since 2008. On that drive, it becomes hard to believe that Pennsylvania has a population of 13,000,000. Farther east is the appropriately-named World's End State Park. At the vista in the park, it really feels like you're standing at the edge of the earth.
