Using ISO to auto meter your exposure while shooting everything else Manual is a awesome. It means you can not worry about re-adjusting when vlogging or shooting 2 or 3 different lighting scenes all in the same take. Like when walking from inside to outside. Not only does it auto adjust for you, you can set the maximum ISO so that you don't go too high with it and then introduce a bunch of ISO noise. It's a game changer. The Canon 5D Mark IV has so many hidden treasures like this. Did I tell you that I love this camera!?

Great video, but can you give me any tips on how to avoid the clicking noises from the lens auto focusing? I have the 5d iv 24-70, and 70-200. I've heard the external mic won't make much difference. Is there any zoom lens that works on a EF mount that is equal to STM?

Hi Michael, really appreciate the wealth of knowledge you are sharing. Question about C-log. Shooting in Manual with C Log enabled. when in 4k C log is displayed on the rear display as solid. In all the HD modes C LOG is flashing on the rear display. is there a reason for this? Thanks

Will Heap Hi Will. Thanks mate, appreciate you checking out my videos. You want to ensure it isn’t blinking at all. In HD to stop it blinking you need to turn off peripheral illumination under lens aberration correction. It blinks in HD to tell you it is on and as it can introduce noise and banding if on during clog shooting it’s best practice to turn it off to avoid any issues. When you switch to 4K peripheral illumination is automatically set to off as it’s not available in 4K due to the crop factor. So that’s why it doesn’t flash when you are shooting 4K! I have Cannon 5D Mark IV but dont' have the same menu settings available. It's currently on FHD 23.98P ALL-I , but no option for FHD 25P ALL-I? Is there another setting that needs to be changed first to give those options?

Yeah, find the setting to switch from PAL to NTSC (or vise versus) and switch that. I think it’s in the yellow wrench menu 4 or 5.

Hi Michael! Love your videos. Quick question, on my Mk IV I can't get the touchscreen to Autofocus when in video mode. It works in still mode. The only way I can use the screen for AF is to turn on the servo AF mode but then the camera continually refocuses as I move around. Is this normal or do you think I have some whacky setting on that's stopping touchscreen focus?

Hey Michael, quick question. You talked about using slo mo on the Canon 5D Mark IV at 720P then upping it to 1080P for output. At what point is the video file upscaled? Do you just drag it in to the timeline in Premiere and adjust it to fit? Or is there another step that needs to be done before exporting?

Ken Foster Yes, this is for 120p slo mo. firstly you you just drag it into your 1080 timeline in premiere and then scale it up to frame size. There is a lossless upscale feature in After Effects but I found the quality difference almost negligible between processing first to 1080 and just up scaling to the timeline in premiere.

I find the ISO 3200 limit works really well with my f1.2 and f1.4 lenses even at night. Just bought a 14mm f2.8 and have to bump up the ISO into the noisy range when shooting at night.

Miles Trevelyan-Johnson Thanks for the input Miles! 14mm would be super wide but how does it work in 4K? Would be pretty solid I reckon.

Yeah 14mm with the 1.7x crop ends up around 24mm which is a very useful wide angle. I swapped my 16 to 35 f2.8Lii for the Canon 24mm f1.4ii which was a great decision because the 24mm is fantastic and is so much better than the zoom. Since I invested in 256gb cards shooting alot more 4k and the 24mm was giving around a 40mm with the 1.7 crop which was not wide enough for quite a bit of the shooting I do. I am currently based in South India so shooting 4k gives more options for selling stock even though 1080 is the resolution I will render to. So picked up the new Samyang f2.8 14mm autofocus lens specifically for 4k shooting on the 5dmk4 which has great centre sharpness and very little chromatic abberation and distortion. I prefer its bokeh as well to the Canon zoom. The only zoom I like is my Canon 70 to 200 f2.8L other than that, just use primes now.

ipavetv hey mate, thanks for your comments. Not sure why it’s just doing it’s own thing. Remember there are 2 settings, one for 4K mode and one for HD settings. Could that be the issue? On the stop recording I had that when my card speed was too low (wrong card in there). You need CF or an SD that can do above 90MB/s. What cards are you using?

Yeah you can, it outputs 4.2.2 8 bit 1920 x 1080.

Yeah, Log is a bit of a process to get exposure spot on, so I would suggest a bit more care when using log and Canon have obviously not allowed the camera to self expose when it comes to log. As an example. When you shoot outdoors with Log compared to indoors the settings for exposure are massively different. I haven't really covered this, but I have done a video you can find in my 5D Mk IV playlist on getting the exposure right for log. And for that you want your ISO to be locked down at 400 to get the full range of stops available with the log feature. Any higher and the image blows out and gets really noisy. Hope that helps!

Akira Y. I think it’s down to cLOG being optimised for native ISO 400 to gain the full dynamic range increase that LOG provides. Going over native 400 ISO introduces a greater amount of noises so perhaps that’s the reason for the restriction.

NJ Family hey yeah, you will pick up some focusing noise for sure. You may need to go off camera mic solution. The Rode videomicpro will help a lot but not eliminate it all-together. I think some of the EF-S STM lenses work on the 5D for 4K. I just work with primes for my work so the focus noise isn’t as noticeable if at all. The 50mm f1.8 and the 24mm f1.4 are my go to’s.

NJ Family Thabks so much for the kind words! The micro is great but just check reviews of the rycote Mount it comes with. The pre-amps in the 5D4 are actually not that bad so the added boost setting of the videomicpro is such a good feature of that mic but the micro should still get you great results for an off camera mic!
