Here is the backpacking cook kit that I used all last year and plan on using again this year. Best ultralight option out there for most backpacking meals.

An OldTimer here......Glad to see a video that closes with the reviewer being "Humble" rather than a know it all. You asked your audience to critique, assist in better gear, and better ideas to improve an outstanding setup as is. That's helps you......and others to customize a kit to a specific needs and opens possabilities we/you may not have thought or seen before. HUMBLE.....GREAT VIDEO !!!

Awesome kit! Question: why use hotlips? If your pot is too hot for lips then it means the water is too hot and thus will burn you, right? I use my lips as a temperature gage, not to burn the rest of my mouth or esophagus. Drinking too hot liquids and foods has been associated with esophagus cancer, maybe mouth cancers too.

Just a safety thing for me and it weights nothing. I typically do not like super duper hot drinks in general. I currently use a Jetboil MicroMo nowadays. But if I were to take titanium, I'd probably still include the hotlips. Old habits die hard. Happy adventuring!

Nice kit you put together. I would find one other thing very helpful if you were to measure Height and Width and Depth when "fully packaged up". A lot of us use a waist pack instead of a backpack for day trekking. Just think it would help since sometimes the measurements are wrong on the web pages. Doing that would help to make it "real world" for us. Nice video, learned a lot as I am new to the whole ultra- lite gear.

Great video. I have the same pot for my kit, but considering adding the 400 mug as well. Do you happen to know if the soto windmaster(4-prong) will fit in there instead of the stove you have now? Seems it might be a bit too tight
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 2 жыл бұрын
Hello there. I can verify that the Soto Windmaster does not fit on the side of the 400 cup. The only way to carry that stove in this setup is to move the fuel canister to another location in your pack and set the stove in the 400 cup. I will say this though. That the fit is very tight, so I would think over time, you will mar the inside of your 400 cup. Hope that information helps. Take care.

You could save some weight and space by buying the titanium BRS-3000T on Amazon. I use the Snowpeak Litemax, too, but thought I’d try the BRS. I was amazed at the size and weight of the Litemax... until I saw/used the BRS. It’s unbelievable how small and light it is. With that said, I still use my Snow Peak. I love it too much... but if you’re more gear/brand agnostic, you’d probably like it.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Mr. Tangent. I have the BRS and it has completely failed to grow on me...I know people have traveled up and down with it without a problem but the few times I used it and watched a few of my friends use theirs I have not been impressed what-so-ever. Maybe I got a bunk unit but the legs are all cockeyed, seems like it was wisked together in a rush, its super inefficient when compared to other stoves, its uglier than crap (sorry its just is..lol), and I watched a buddy of mine attempt to boil water for ever and a day in colder conditions where my Snow Peak Gigapower cooked up a hot meal for me in just a couple of minutes. I want to love the BRS, but I just can't. I know its kind of faux pas to say it in our backpacking community but I'll carry the extra ounce and just use the Snow Peak. Take care my friend.

@TubaSolotheHiker

I bounce between this one and my Titan Kettle. In the Titan Kettle I'll take the cup from this kit as it nests perfectly. But yeah, this kit is still very much in my rotation. The only difference is that I'm using the Soto Windmaster stove which unfortunately can't fit with the canister inside but that's an easy fix. I put the Soto Windmaster into the cup and find a different place for my fuel. Take care my friend.

Great video. I have been thinking about trying a fat pot like this, all my cook kits are cups, 900, 700, 450, etc. One note, for the weight of the cook kit you have to count the weight of the fuel container,.. so empty weight of the canister (not the fuel weight). Just like if you use alcohol stove, you count the weight of your fuel bottle, but the fuel is consumable weight. That is the one area where canister stove have a little more weight then an alcohol stove because the fuel container for alcohol is a thin plastic bottle, but for a canister stove it's a metal container.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 6 жыл бұрын
You certainly brought up a concept that I have not thought of. I've never once considered to weigh the canister its self empty. Certainly make sense. I'll have to explore this concept more and see if others are considering that in their overall weight of a cook kit. I guess I just figured that the canister as a whole as the consumable/cost of doing business. hmmmmm got me thinking. Good stuff.
@flashmanv3260
@flashmanv3260 6 жыл бұрын
I think most don't count the weight. And if using the weight only as a direct comparison form one persons canister cook set to another it keeps the comparison even if everyone excludes it (I guess). It becomes more of an issue if you compare an alcohol set up to a canister setup. For alcohol my fuel bottle is .3 oz and hold about 4.5 oz. For a canister you have about 3.5 oz of fuel but the canister has a weight of 3.5oz. That is the same weight as a small TI cooking pot. You always have that weight with you, overnight trip or 4 days,.. even if it runs out, you carry it out,.. it's the container, not a consumable. The fact that you get rid of the can does not make it correct to say that 3.5 oz is consumable. My friend refiles his canister because he does not do long trip, usually 2 nights or so, and then is stuck with 1/2 empty cans, so in his case it is a reusable can. Anyway, not my knock on you personally,.. everyone seems to do it. It's less of an issue for someone who has a heavy jet boil. It's just dishonest when it part of a cook kit that someone has gone the extra mile to make "ultralight" TI pots, lightest burner, Cuban fiber stuff sack to save grams and then there is really 3.5 oz added to the weight of the kit that is hidden. I ultra light pack at times, my friend is at base weight of 4.9999 lbs, so he says he is under 5lb. He carries his heavy iPhone in his pocket, so he says it is not part of his "base weight" I carry my phone in my pack hip belt so I need to count it :-) Just reminds me of that kind of mentality. Again no knock to you personally, I like you videos, I now have a msr lid on my snow peak 900 from a video you did awhile back. Also not an alcohol vs canister fanboy dig, I carry a canister about 50% of the time, alcohol the other 1/2, I like both systems, they both have a plus and neg.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 6 жыл бұрын
flashman V Certainly no offense taken, you brought out a very good point and I’m have one of them light bulb moments. On a lighter note, maybe, once the canister is empty I’ll carry it in my pocket, then it won’t count. Lol. Good stuff.

are you able to put 220g canister a bigger version of the canister you showed on video on .9 litre pot? I'm getting the nonstick pot a set, 0.6 and 0.9 and wonder if the bigger version canister can fit on these two pot
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 4 жыл бұрын
I am of the belief that that the bigger canister will be too tall to nest but that doesn't mean you can't put the lid below the pot and just let the bigger canister stick out above the lip. If you pick up the DCF bag there may be just enough play to allow the bigger canister with the lid under the pot and it stays together (for the most part).

@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 4 жыл бұрын
The only, and I mean the only non-stick that has ever worked for me was the GSI brand Pinnacle products (i.e. GSI Pinnacle Soloist). Nothing comes close to that. Since I'm somewhat unwilling to carry the weight for the function, I've gone bare titanium and adjusted my backpacking food to things that are better suited for bare titanium. Like soups, minute rice, or boiling water for dehydrated meals. But if you are willing to carry the weight of the Pinnacle Soloist, there really is no better pot. I wish they made it in a squaty-wide version like the .9 Evernew. Then I would seriously consider carrying that pot. It would open up so many different options for backpacking food. Oh well. Hope that all helps.

Hello there. Unfortunately this is not a set but the cup can be easily purchased at this link (not affiliate link): a.co/fCuwvgS. The only draw back so far is that the flame can lick up the side of the cup and disfigure the red handles if you are not careful how you place the cup on the stove you have. But beyond that its a solid little piece of kit. As far as the pot goes, its the .9L version. Been very good to me...very very good.

Hello there. You can get a non-stick version of this pot but the one in the video is a titanium with no addition "non-stick" properties. Simply put, if you ain't stirring, its very likely actual food will stick. And if that isn't funny enough, even if you stir, food will stick. Its the unfortunate trade off for the light weight properties of this pot. For what its worth, very hearty soups and minute rice based meals should be fine in this pot with some olive oil, but if you are looking to cook eggs (no matter how much butter or oil you use) it will stick.
