I have had home made external SSDs of various descriptions for several years and used them as external boot drives via Thunderbolt for my 27" iMac. Having just bought a MacBook Pro 14" M1 I'll be making a fast external M.2 SSD as work storage connected via one of the 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports. Currently I use a 256gb USB C flash drive but want something faster. Its just a matter of waiting till I see the appropriate M.2 drive and case, so your choices were interesting.

When you mentioned durability, you didn't at all talk about the enclosure itself. It can fail, it did for me. The company did replace it for me. The heat (which you also didn't mention) the enclosure generates is high and was likely the cause of its failure.
@elephantbirdlord11 ай бұрын
You need to peel off the brown plastic film from the white heat pad. Otherwise the heat from the drive overheat the board chipset and damage it over time.

I needed this video. Thanks. I just ordered one of these enclosures and I used your link. You helped me build my first PC a couple years ago with your video with the Ryzen 5 3600 and b450 gaming plus max (the 3600 was sold out so I went with the 2600 but I used the same motherboard). Anyway I needed this enclosure so I can swap out the slower Intel 660p 512GB that came with my HP Pavilion Aero 13 laptop (Ryzen 7 5800u version) and put in the XPG SX8200 Pro 512GB leftover from my first build since it's literally double the speed of the 660p.

I have this setup using a similar SSK enclosure, and an OEM 256GB WD SN730 which had 3000+ Read / ~2220 Write in the PC I pulled it out of. Unfortunately all of my other devices max out at USB 3.1 Gen 1, which tops out at 500-600MB/sec. Still slightly faster (and cheaper) than the average SSD based external drive, but most people probably don't realize their speeds will be limited below USB 3.1 Gen 2, and only around 1000MB/sec even with Gen 2.

Still the option of 2TB or even 4, if you wanna pay a premium for any more than 2TB, is pretty solid. You also need to think about latency and slower speeds if it were possible to have multiple NVMes in one enclosure. I'd assume they would be a factor.

One more thing. I'd looked into WD SSDs a while ago and, from my understanding, the WD Blue NVMes don't have a DRAM cache. That seems to be the case with cheaper SSDs in general (though the Intel 660p does have DRAM but only 100TBW endurance rating). Has that ever been an issue?
