BEST Base Material for a Retaining Wall | Dense or Open Graded Base

In this video we talk about choosing the right base material for the application of your retaining wall. The choices for us are always between a dense or open graded base. Though you can use synthetic base for a retaining wall up to 18" in height, we have not found an application that is suitable for this.
When choosing between an open graded base and a dense graded base for your retaining wall we are looking for where we can drain any water from behind the retaining wall to. If the slope is moving up to the retaining wall, we have a lower area to drain water to so we can opt for an open graded base. However, if the slope is moving down towards the retaining wall there is no area to drain to then we opt for a dense graded base because we can raise the drainage pipe behind the wall and drain through the face of the wall.
