Best Bedbug Solution for Camino de Santiago

Many pilgrims fear bedbugs while walking Camino de Santiago. Though they are mostly just an annoyance for those who do not have a severe allergy, the bites are very unpleasant and can itch for many days. This is the best solution that I have found for bedbugs while on Camino de Santiago. Learn how I treat my gear to prevent bites.

When I did my Camino a few years ago, in addition to treating my sleeping bag liner, I treated my backpack with Permethrin. Whether it helped or not I can’t say but I didn’t have any trouble with bed bugs on that Camino.

Please note, permethrin does not repel bed bugs. It will, however, kill bed bugs which have been in contact with it for approximately 30 minutes.

I think it is also pretty effective at repelling them because they can sense the toxins. It definitely works that way with mosquitos. But honestly I mostly like it because I can feel confident not spending a day at the laundromat if we have a bedbug night. The pack, clothes, and bag being treated give me some confidence that they would die.

I spray my backpack and fanny pack and hat-- anything that is sitting in the room that is exposed at night.

I've been lucky to never have had them. I have been at albergues where others were bitten and when a small group had brought all their stuff to heat up in a clothes dryer because of bedbugs. I used tea-tree oil to line my backpack and all of clothes were kept in lightweight, airtight bags - which were also waterproof. Whether this helped or not I can't say, but I didn't get bitten while on two Caminos.

if you were in albergues where others were biten, check your home. If you brought one female in your bagpack home you can have already a whole colony behind your wallpaper and so on

@@felesamabilis all OK, I've been home a few years since then, without any problems. I also put all my stuff into a black bin liner and checked it all in a hot dryer before bringing it into the house.

@@markdonovan1540 that's perfect :) Many people just think the worst problem with bedbugs are the bites on the Camino. But there are really bad stories about bringing them home I heard even from specialists. That's why I try to warn everyone

What would you say to also spraying it on clothes turned inside-out? Aside from the sensitive skin issue. Is it unnecessary?

I did spray all my clothes inside out with the one mentioned.. did not notice any side effects.

Lo de los chinches en el Camino , en España,es casi una leyenda . Lo que no es una leyenda son las garrapatas en USA. Que se enganchan dentro del cuerpo incluso las de las Montañas Rocosas pueden matarte. En España no hay problema de mosquitos. Excepto en ciertos lugares , pocos. Alguna charca ????? En el Camino es zona seca y la húmeda y fría del Cantábrico tampoco. Mosquitos hay en el Canadá que pueden matar a un alce . En España no existen animales, insectos peligrosos, en los campos y bosques a menos que tengas alergia a la picada. Las serpientes son inofensivas. Se puede dormir en el bosque ,o en el campo. No hay peligro. En España hay osos en las montañas del Norte y lobos.

I bought a light weight down blanket. Should this be enough or will you end up sleeping on a matrass with no fitted sheet on it? Do you think a sleeping bag will be the better option?

All the albergues give you a disposable paper sheet to cover the bed. If you are okay with disposable sheet and down blanket, then this is enough. Or, the blanket is long enough to wrap around you like a taco…also would be enough.

It's possible that other unknowing pilgrims carry them from bed to bed, even to the best accommodations. That's my only concern about staying at a communal place. I am guessing that bedbugs are difficult to "control" because so many pilgrims come nightly and might reinfect the beds.

It's permethrin, but it's not a deterrent, nor will it kill them on contact. It will kill them over an hour or so. That's why I use it so that I'm not transporting the little buggers from albergue to albergue.

It's not a tropical trail. But the "toxic" nature of the chemicals is equally exaggerated. I'm glad to not worry about bedbugs!

Yep and when I get out of the shower I use a few squirts under my armpits and on my fruit to keep those pesky fruit flies away.
