I could see the excitement in your eyes when you announced at the beginning that you are going in July. 😀 Very happy for you. You didn't mention how much of the Way you are planning to cover, nor your starting point, so I'm looking forward to hear in your next videos. This was really good, Jeremiah. I've been watching others' packing videos, giving me some context for your presentation, and what you have to say makes sense. I like the "3 of" - another mentioned this - good not just to have a day off from laundry but to also have the option of something fresh/different to wear in the evening or to sleep in. You are the first to suggest a down blanket rather than a bag and I think I like that. Buen Camino!

Thanks for the feedback! I will start in Logrono and walk as far as I can in 11 days. I'm considering cranking out some big days and going all the way to Leon. But that is more than I think is best for a pilgrimage...so we shall see. Regardless of where I am, on the morning of the 24th I will take train to Santiago to see the festivities in Santiago for the 24-26. I plan on telling the story here on the channel so folks can see a lot of my trip!

Packing can make or break your Camino, so it needs a bit of thought and practice to get it right for each individual. I've always set an upper limit of backpack weight at 10% of body weight, but usually try to get under that by 1 of 1.5 kg, which allows me to carry water and still stay under my 10% top limit. My first Camino, SJPP to Finisterre, was made using a 22L Deuter backpack. By not going for a bigger size, it forced me to be much more selective in what to carry. I walked in the summer/autumn period, so I didn't need heavy clothing. If you walk in the cooler months, then a little bit more weight will be a consequence of carrying heavier clothing - although lightweight puffer jacket and a Merino wool underlayer should keep you warm while walking. Hand laundry every day, or every other day, will enable you to carry less clothing. (Machine laundry on wetter or colder days). Technical clothing materials are super light, breathable and have great wicking to keep you comfortable; although they are quite expensive. In my opinion 2 very good quality tops will be money well spent. The cheaper ones just don't do the same job. I try to buy the more expensive, good quality outdoor clothing at end of season when there are significant discounts to be had.

This is excellent advice Mark! Thanks for sharing with folks here. You don’t need much to make this walk, but it’s important that you have the right items.

I find that IBuprofen makes my pain and inflammation worse because it destroys the gut lining and the gut is the first line of immune defense. A good alternative is curcummin supplement. Curcumin has been shown to block NF-κB activation increased by several different inflammatory stimuli [10]. Curcumin has also been shown to suppress inflammation through many different mechanisms beyond the scope of this review, thereby supporting its mechanism of action as a potential anti-inflammatory agent

I’m a fan of ibuprofen and I’ve had no problems with it for the 3-4 weeks at a time that I’m on Camino. But honestly I think ANY anti-inflammatory will help when you are walking 15-20 miles/day!!!

@@CaminoGuide I'm inclined to agree. I suffered quite a bit with stomach problems when I bust out the ibuprofen (most popular brand is Neurofen here in the UK) on Day 2 of the Camino Ingles and took it pretty much every 6 hours thereafter until we finished the Camino 5 days later. That and all those rather nice cafe con leches played havoc with my stomach. This time, I'm much wiser and my doctor has prescribed Omeprazole to take twice a day for the duration of the Camino - that will see off any stomach issues from regular doses of Neurofen and coffee!

Shoes on sandals on the bag. 1 warm top and 1 set of water proofs. Wash every day. 400gram sleeping bag and a woolie hat for cold weather. I walked Frances April 1 to April 24 . Hi there Jeremiah. Have walked 5 x caminos over the past 4 years but this May I am walking the Via de La Plata and for the first time, I am trying out a specially designed camino umbrella (like the one used by Efren). Like you, I have fallen out of favour with ponchos and rain jackets. Also included though is a pair of lite gaiters to keep the rain out of my shoes. Any comments; great video BTW, thanks for your time to put it together.

I actually still use a poncho for the rain. I really only use the umbrella for sun. I think if I were depending on it for rain, I may consider one of these rain skirts that I’ve seen people wear rather than gaiters. I’ve had rain pants and literally ever put them on!

Now that I'm home from my Camino... This video showed having a little bag to take to the supermarket to carry the stuff you bought...I did this but I only used it 1 - 2 times, so I could have save several dollars by just spending the 10 cent euro to buy the store bag. Mostly I just carried the few items I bought in my hands. I should have just carried 1 pair of pants and 1 shorts. I even question the rain pants I went with, had I got stuck in the elements overnight but that never happened and I found them too hot wearing when we did incur rain, I got too sweaty.

Great info in general except the fact that you say that Spain is very humid and clothes don’t dry. Well that sounds more like England than Spain. Specially if you a are walking in July or August. I guarantee you won’t be seeing to much humidity and rain on the Meseta. You may catch a rain shower or two crossing the Pyrenees and through Navarra but from there on and past Leon it’s going to be more dessert hot than jungle humid. Obviously I am speaking about the Camino Frances. The Primitivo, the Inglés or the Camino del Norte usually have more rainfall since they touch the coastline on many stretches. But summer months are pretty dry usually too. What you carry varies depending not only on the season but on the Camino you choose to walk. But be sure that if your Camino is the Frances, 70% will be very very hot and dry… and the chances of bad rainy weather for the rest are low in July and August.
@CaminoGuide3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point. I missed that. I am normally walking in Galicia in May. I’m sure you are right that moisture is not a problem inland in July. My only July Camino really only had rain in the Pyrenees. So those going in the summer months probably have some different concerns with regard to clothing.

@@stevendanielson8104 Hi! Steven, in light of how hot I saw it was in Spain in the summer, I am very happy for going in April/May. I think during the first week or so there were about 2 or 3 days of "soaking rain" where that condition persisted all day. Other than that, the weather was mostly cool in the morning and warming throughout the day. @CaminoGuide3 жыл бұрын
Good question. When mine is not packed full, I don't have problems with the airline, but normally the limit is about 40L on carryon. I have never been told this was too large because I don't pack it full. Additionally, though I think trekking poles are not technically TSA compliant, if I pack them inside the pack I have not had them turned away. For me, I always leave myself time that if my pole threw up TSA flags, then I would just go check the bag. But so far I can get through TSA on the way to Spain, which I prefer so that I don't have to delay a Camino start because of a lost bag. Spain WILL NOT let you through an airport with poles though. I've been caught every time I have tried. So coming home, I always check the bag. I've done a few things there. Sometimes I have tightened all straps as tight as possible and then tied them all into a tight knot together so they are less likely to get caught in machinery. That has never been a problem but it's not a good method. Straps could still get caught and damaged. Sometimes I have brought a very lightweight large duffel and put the whole pack in there. I really only do that when I am with a group though. We use the duffel as a checked bag for problem items outgoing. Then I put my pack and problem items in it together on the way home. I have also seen people use the cheap IKEA bags for this. The easiest option though? Madrid airport has those plastic wrap machines for luggage. Just wrap it in plastic and check it. No problem for sure then.
@rnewland893 жыл бұрын
I heard about a people donating hiking stuff like the pole someplace somewhere along the Camino. Maybe someone else can use it and you won't have to check your bag
@CaminoGuide3 жыл бұрын
@@rnewland89 I don't know if it is still going, but there was an art project in Santiago with donated poles. But they weren't used again. It's wasterful, but I have said before that if a person only plans to do one trek then buying cheap and tossing in Santiago is probably best. I just had a chat in a forum the other day about how cool it would be if there was a place that would receive them in Santiago and then take them back to St Jean to be sold cheaply. There really should be a way to get them to people who will use them.

You can follow backpacking/hiking or bicycle touring gear lists, and just remove any items that don't fit (related to isolation). PS: Temperature, conditions and needs change according to each trail- coastal are warmer but humid. Interior routes are hotter and dried during the day, but colder at night. Plus you will find less cheap housing the farther away you are, and the less popular the routes are.

7 times, always the CF? I’m leaving in 4 days for the Del Norte so I wonder if your packing would change due to that route. I’m rethinking some on my packing after watching this. I.e. do I need both the rain jacket and poncho, may leave the jacket behind. I have a sleep shirt, a long sleeve shirt and 3 collared dry fit shirts. My 40L pack is starting to fill up so I’m again looking at my packing. I plan to start off with 2 lbs of jerky (if it fits) for something to snack on due to not knowing what will be open.
@CaminoGuide3 жыл бұрын
I'm always on CF because I normally lead groups there (not this year). The CF is the only one that can sustain groups of 20+ in albergues, bars, etc. Your shirts is a good example...obviously I think 5 is way more than needed. I consider 3 a luxury and 2 are needed. Obviously I have no experience of the Norte, but my presumption is that being near the coast means a bit more breezy and moderate. If that is true then I don't think I'd change much...maybe include a thin fleece or my puffy?

Dude, this is great information and a very good video. Let me pay you back for your information. Read James Nestor's book "Breath". He goes over what it means to the body to breath thru the mouth vs through the nose. The best advice I ever got re mouth breathing. He recommends using a tiny, 1.5 mm piece of tape from top lip to bottom lip when you go to sleep at nite. It is magic. No more snoring. You will be amazed and everyone around you, very grateful. Have a lovely life and you will be so much more healthy. Buen Camino. Thanks again.

Sitting here, nursing a Spring cold and wishing I were in Spain so the next best thing . . . Some good points here but, while we each walk our own Camino, I'll just say: too many clothes, too big a bag. The temptation is: Oh, I've got some space, what else ought I take? I did my first CF Camino (2001) with a 60L pack which was what I had, by the time I got to Pamplona I shipped home about a third of the gear. Since then I've found 40L is more than enough. If you carry two water bottles drink from the one in the left pocket first; on the CF you are walking west and the sun is on your back/left hand side. The left hand bottle gets warmer and tepid water mid afternoon is NOT refreshing! Summer, in Spain, on the Camino and no hat? Tsk, Tsk! Also, Duct tape - take a few metres worth wrapped around an old store card. Finally, and this is the most important point DO. NOT. PIERCE. BLISTERS. WITH. A. NEEDLE. AND. THREAD! As a friend, a feisty Irishwoman and a medical doctor who has worked with MSF in war zones and refugee camps across the world and who doesn't suffer fools lightly once put it to a major in the Spanish army medical corps who was busily piercing blisters: "Why not give them a shot of toxin instead?" If you get a hot spot tape it up, even duct tape will do. Keep it clean, keep it dry and let the air get to it when resting. If you have to walk on it tape it over - again, even duct tape will do. ¡Ultreia y buen Camino a todos!

Apologies, I commented before watching the end of your Vlog. I have never stayed in an Albergue so, some of the things you suggest packing are not necessary for me. Reasons? Too old, need my own space, room and toilet; also don't like to walk in the dark so early.....what's the point other than racing to the next town to get a bed?
@CaminoGuide Жыл бұрын
Ahhh….that’s a good point. If you’ll stay in hotels every night, then there are several sleeping items and some hygiene stuff that will be provided for you.

Yes. One outfit on and 2 in the pack is the very most you need. Most would do one on the body and one in the pack.

Great video, learned a lot. However I heard down it’s in the best to use because of the bedbugs. Do you have a fiber down?
@CaminoGuide3 жыл бұрын
Mine is actual down. I assume that they say don’t use down because you can’t put in a normal washer/dryer? That’s one of the reasons the blanket is better. No crevices for them to hide. I would just take the down blanket out and shake/brush it outside if it seemed to have bedbugs. But I forgot this important step in the video. I treat everything with Permethrin for the bedbugs. I don’t have much problem with them then.

Well, thank you for saying comment all you like. So I have yet another question. Do I need a visa? I want to be able to stop at times for a couple of days when I feel I need to rest. So, there is 60 days between the time I land in Madrid and my return flight. If I end up with extra time at the end I thought I would just wander around Spain. Is that too long a stay without a visa?

Jeremiah, did you have any trouble getting through security with trekking poles? I'm planning on not checking in my rucksack since it should be small enough to carry on thr aircraft.
@CaminoGuide2 жыл бұрын
I have NEVER been stopped with trekking poles in a US airport. They are against TSA regs. But I’ve never been stopped. I’m ALWAYS stopped by Spanish airports. My suggestion: go early when you leave the US and try them through security. If you get caught, go back and check them. In Spain? Check your bag and get it when you get home.

I don't know that route from Lugo. But in general I would say for older pilgrims or for those out of shape (like me!!!), just don't push too hard. For a group like yours...the slowest person must set the pace. And the other folks must decide they will enjoy the pilgrimage at that pace.

Tks for all the tips. Will change some things out. Couple questions . Where did you get hygiene bag? And can you take trekking poles onto plane or must they be checked?
@CaminoGuide3 жыл бұрын
The hygiene bag was just one of the small dirty sacks you can get in any camping store. Usually they come in packs of 3 or so. TSA regulations say no trekking poles in carry on. However, I always take them in with no issues in the US. Normally, I leave myself time to go check them if they tell me “no” and have never needed to do so. But every airport I’ve tried in Spain has stopped me. Don’t even bother trying. So for me, I carry them on in my backpack on the way there so that my backpack can’t be lost and delay my Camino. Then on the way home, I check my backpack with poles inside. I don’t care if it gets delayed on the way home.
