Hi, I have a difficult decision to make. Please help me decide between Roland Go keys 5, Korg EK 50L and the Yamaha EW425. Piano and EP has priority.

My son has been playing piano now for about 2.5 years (he's 8) and the Roland FP-10 is everything we need. Recently I've picked back up playing in earnest myself (I briefly took lessons in high school 20+ years ago) and can vouch that the FP-10 feels great. We don't need a ton of features or sounds, and the headphones, USB, and Bluetooth work great. We use it with Piano Marvel via my son's teacher and it connects great to an iPad and other third party piano learning apps like Note Rush. I've been able to learn and play a few more intermediate level pieces such as Nuvole Bianche by Einaudi and it sounds great, lots of dynamic range. Someday I can see us upgrading to a larger or better model but it works great in our living room for what we need.
@ClifBratcherАй бұрын
I'd honestly say the lack of functionality can be a big positive for a true beginner. I have a ton of synths but they're intimidating to my kiddo. Picked up a P45 (similar to the P145) over the holidays and she's been playing it almost daily. It's got some extra functionality but on the surface it's just power and volume. Nothing to distract from just playing.
@bitblueduckАй бұрын
Maybe I am in the minority but I feel the same about the number of tones. If I want to learn piano as a beginner, one decent piano tone, or a few is all that's needed. I mean sure, having more is better given they meet a decent quality, but I see that as an extra not a must have.

I totally agree. I got a Korg Liano, only 8 sounds, and I find the lack of 'bells and whistles' keeps me focussed on learning to play the piano rather than trying different sounds and effects. At a very reeasonable price too.

It has all the features you need: Weighted Keys, a pedel, good speakers, simple design, mulitple instrument options, and it is just plug and play. And at just $399 it is also one of the cheapest options out there for a full 88 key keyboard. If you are just learning to play and and do not want to break the bank, it is great option.

Thanks. There are many other quality beginner digital pianos out there for not a lot of money. I just purchased an AODSK B-83S 88-weighted key digital piano with a nice black upright piano looking stand (3 foot pedals & stylish music shelf) for our recent college graduate. We wanted something that looks and sounds great, but not too expensive, in case she loses interest and we have to sell it. I also bought the matching padded bench and it looks like a real upright piano! Total cost (2024) $400. A lot of bang for the buck! Equipped with headphones, volume adjustment, multi-tone selection, recording control, playback function, split keyboard teaching function, etc. Input for playing MP3, built-in amplifier, support for external speakers or headphones, suitable for different use scenarios. With 128 polyphony numbers 128 Timbres and 88 demonstration songs.

How have you found the learning curve on that piano? I'm seriously considering buying it, having only played a Yamaha DGX-200 digital piano previously (other than growing up with an ancient upright piano I loved). I picked up the Roland FRP Nuvola at Costco and honestly i love it. I would say it falls somewhere between the 10 and 30. Im less concerned about the number of sounds it comes with because I primarily use it in my home studio for producing. It was $700, which was kind of a lot for me since i only started learning piano a few months before I got it. As someone with large hends its been a pain finding a keyboard i can play without fouling sharps/flats and this one is big enough that fouling is no longer an issue. Made it worth it for because the first like three months of trying to learn were frusting bc my old keyboard was too small. One issue though is I'm 6'5 and the furniture set up is kind of short so i hit my knees on it a lot.

As someone who sells keyboards for a living I have a few thoughts. I think if we are talking about entry-level keyboards with all of the qualifiers you mentioned (88 key, weighted, velocity sensitive) it seems like possibly an omission to sell your own keyboard by excluding lower priced options such as the Yamaha P-45 and Casio CDP-S160 which both come in at $399 and offer the same features as that P-145 you did talk about. On the midi keyboards, almost any digital keyboard doubles as a midi controller these days so long as it has a USB to host output. However if we are talking about just a midi only controller, I am a big fan of the Nektar line, which come with full DAW mapping right out of the gate for many of the most commonly used DAWs, meaning you plug in and there is no configuration in the settings, the controller does what you want it to do immediately. My favorite premium keyboard is the Yamaha PS-500 as it has stream keys which I have not discovered on any other model that really helps beginners learn piano in a new way.

For children, speaking as a pianist, its the FP10 everytime. Limiting the amount of sounds is a GOOD thing because it focusses on the sounds the pianist will play. Novelty sounds distract. The Roland is a proper piano. It feels right to the touch and can be played for hours. Not very keen on Go keys it plays like a toy. The bluetooth means you can use backing tracks on the phone.

@Notmehimorthem6 күн бұрын
@@BestTrader-hp2sd Personally I would go for the Roland FP10 though both pianos can take you to intermediate and a pro would not be ashamed of it. A couple of things to bear in mid. The "touch" of the keyboard is everything. More than anything, a musician wants an emotional connection with the instrument and over time the fingers become ultra sensitive and can express emotion through touch. So many children get to start on bad keyboards with poor touch and that means that, they can feel the keys are not "giving back" even if they can't say why, and the can get bored. These two keyboards are pianist keyboards not Argos Christmas presents. Secondly, you will need some kind of amplification. A piano needs stereo. i would not recommend getting a keyboard amp until there are gigs. They are mono too so crush the sound into one channel. For the home you can run the sound out through an old hi-fi or something, to begin with. Put the speakers facing the ears if possible. If the student gets interested then usually you get an Audio Interface (I would recommend Focusrite - (you can get these used on ebay etc). THis can then be plugged into a laptop and this opens a whole universe, but this is later, first learn to play a bit.
@mydogeatspuke6 күн бұрын
@BestTrader-hp2sd it has 88 weighted keys so there's no reason why not.
@BestTrader-hp2sd6 күн бұрын
I'm hesitating to make the purchase because I don't want a piano that won't get me through the intermediate stage, it must get me through the intermediate stage and after that I can consider buying one with better key action. Both of your replies means a lot to me btw, with the p145 I'm concerned about the polyphony being too low for the intermediate stage of playing and the piano just not being durable or long lasting.

The less you spend, the less keys you get and the less likely they are to be weighted. If you want to learn to play a keyboard, by all means spend a couple hundred on a keyboard. If you want to learn to play the piano, though, you'll want those extras that cost a bit more. Yes 3k is absurd, but there are plenty closer to 500-600 that are more than capable. Hobbies are usually expensive, though.
