OH MY GOD I PLAYED THIS LAST WEEK!!! Thank you for all the work you did on it! And by some incredible coincidence I played the EXACT same song as you did at the end of the video on it! Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the very few songs I know. Learned it by ear when I was 7 or 8, and still somehow remember the whole medley! I think those cracks definitely have caused it to detune much quicker than you might have hoped, and the keys seem to have more run ins with intoxicated guests, so a few still stick, but it's so special to have a public piano available and playable here! For those interested in this kind of work, being a pianotuner/tech is very much about improvising. Everything would be easy if you had the instrument in a workshop, but with limited tools somewhere far away from home you have to improvise. Like using the gauge for scraping or turning the keystop felt upside down etc. Its not wrong, but very often you have to do these kind of things and like you said. Normally you would replace etc, but most often you dont have the exact same parts with you. If they really wanted to have it replaced you would have the right ones with you next time. Good job! I've been in the business for the past 24 years and the thing i love the most is the people. The next thing is the improvise and invent tools, solutions etc when encountering new challenges.

For Doc or anyone else working in an airport- I'm an airline mechanic and we stock cases of isopropyl alcohol for cleaning right below the concourses in our flame cabinets. If you've got airport permission to work, you could always ask a company rep to ask the AMTs for some alcohol, or maybe the bar for some disinfectant cleaner 👍

Isopropyl might not be a good idea to clean an old piano. It may make the exposed wood very brittle/crack it, and may react with glues or lacquers etc. Regular soap & water would probably be a safer bet. It'd probably be fine, but a bit like using a vacuum to remove dust from your computer. 9/10 times there's no issue with static charge

I serviced a Wurlitzer spinet that had sat in a garage for 30+ years. It had leaves, sticks, mouse droppings, dirt and more inside and on top of it. I gave it a good cleaning, then tuned it two and a half times since it was about -150 cents below pitch (no broken strings in the process, miraculously) and now it's sitting in a coffee shop for their customers to play. Not quite the job you had, of course!

I was gifted a Wurlitzer spinet piano many years ago, after being without a piano (old upright) for several years. I kept it tuned and cared for but never enjoyed playing it. The last time I had it tuned the tuner said it was "the best" he could do. Not a quality piano. I went to a wonderful store, was guided through two warehouses of used pianos. After 2 hours of tinkling many pianos, chose a Yamaha studio upright. I had no idea how different pianos were. I now love playing my Yamaha. (P.S. the store took my spinet and donated it to a music program for children who could not afford pianos)

Actually a plastic 5-in-1 tool is really handy to have in a tool kit. I’d also recommend a straw nozzle attachment for the vacuum. Now if this becomes a habit there are many ways to assemble an almost complete carry-on tool set: a lot of shorter tools (7-inch length restriction), non-metallic pieces, some you can custom 3D print, etc. Felt sets and brushes they don’t really care about. The wires and replacement parts are the hard part…that has to go in checked bags most of the time.

This is actually the dirtiest grand piano I've ever seen and after you cleaned it, fixed it and tuned it, it started to sound like a brand new piano again! I have 2 pianos but they're both keyboards! One is a 61 keyboard and another is a 88 keyboard! Anyways, this piano should be a lot more fun to play in the future!

If you have keyboards you do NOT have a piano. A piano does not plug in!!
@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648
@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648 Ай бұрын
@@JoanBrown-j3e There will always be that argument. However many pianists are now okay with good modern digital pianos which mimic the touch and sound of an acoustic piano very well. And anyhow if you have a humidity regulator in the piano, this DOES plug in, lol -- as do a number of player pianos, even some with built in lights. The one thing I never saw the point of was to put a digital piano in a grand piano form factor. I thought these would be deluxe when I set out to try them. They're not. Putting speakers under the "hood" does not reproduce the grand piano sound. A spinet upright form factor suffices, and it is more realistic. And most decent stereo headphones work well with a digital piano.

DUDE!!! the ending playing "He's a pirate" was awesome and funny because I got auto tabbed from the video I'm using to learning it on guitar🤣🤣. Awesome Job on the restoration! That feeling you get not enjoying playing as much anymore is a common people face around that age, I ended up putting my guitar down for years before picking it up again because I felt like I had to focus on getting my life/career on track. what I can say is find a new challenge on the piano and push through it, DON"T walk away from it because you will be kicking yourself for it later on in life because it just feels like you missed out on so many new skills/songs that you could have learnt. Hope the feeling passes and you can start feeling the full joy of music because your music is awesome!

Sad to say I just played this piano a couple days ago and it’s *very* sticky and fairly out of tune again. I hope someone with tuning knowledge saves it once more! Judging by the creator’s comments, this tune-up actually happened about a year and a half ago, so the deterioration makes sense.

Wow, you are doing a very good job. Thanks for your videos! I am an Italian guy and I live in Germany. I wanted to play in public when I was at the airport in Palermo, but the piano is very untuned and I did some mistakes because sometimes the untuned key are difficult to manage when you normally use a tuned piano. I learned to tune a piano on KZbin, I am not a professional tuner, but I have some videos of my work before and after. I saw your videos when you said that there are not so many tuners in your area and in general and I thought to learn how to do a professional tuning job. I will do it if don't find a job in my field in the next Year. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New year!

I actually played this exact same piano about 10 years ago when i was a kid. My mom was a piano teacher, and she was begging me to play, and when i eventually did play, i played the exact same pirates theme. Crazy to see how much worse the piano has gotten over the years. Seeing the bar next to it, and the gate was a complete shock and sent me back.

Great job, kiddo. I was mesmerized watching this for the whole thing. Just popped up in my recommendations for no particular reason that I know. My mom wanted me to play the piano and I had lessons as a kid, but I was rubbish at it. I thought it sounded great at the end. Fascinating. I had no idea it could take that much effort to clean and tune. They really need to put up a sign at least to ask people to please not put drinks on the piano, etc. Very informative video.

Great video bud. If you ever find yourself dealing with gunk like that again, go grab a bottle of hand sanitizer. Most hand sanitizer is 70-80% Ethanol and it's a wonderful organic solvent. Specifically in this case, that gunk was all dissolved in ethanol once upon a time (it was an alcoholic drink) so it would likely just wipe right off with some of the high-test stuff in hand-san. Basically any gel hand sanitizer like Purell will do.

There are like 100s of way more epic pieces he could have chosen than "Pirates of the Caribbean". If he'd spent 10 minutes just gently dusting it then Pirates would be fine. 8 hours of cleaning requires something like Chopin's Heroic.
