For this bench-top thickness planer head-to-head we evaluated several categories including:
Pre-Test Inspection and Adjustment - We looked at how level the infeed and outfeed tables were, we adjusted them, and noted how easy or difficult the process was.
Feed Rate (Speed) - We measured the no-load feed rate of each planer and compared that to the feed rates under load for different material types. In our opinion this provides a sense of how powerful the motors are.
Maximum Depth of Cut Performance - For this evaluation we measured the amp draw for each thickness planer under load planing several different types of wood. Again in our opinion this helps compare the strength of the motors during the planing process.
Depth of Cut Accuracy - For this evaluation we wanted to look at how accurately the planers remove a specified depth. Each planer has a dial that when turned a specified amount will theoretically remove a given depth in a single pass. We compared how accurately each planer was able to remove a fixed depth based on the dial.
Snipe Evaluation - Snipe is fairly common with thickness planers, especially benchtop models like the ones in this evaluation. We compared the length of snipe for each planer and material type.
Surface Finish Evaluation - Ultimately the surface finish is really important, especially if the finish reduces the time to prepare the work piece of paint, stain and or clear finishes. We applied blue chalk to the surface of the boards in order to improve our visual inspection combined with a physical inspection (feeling the surface) to rank the surface finish for each planer.
Blade Change Evaluation - Lastly we measured the time to do a blade change on these planers. Changing blades is a necessary task for any thickness planer so we wanted to see how they compared.
Warranty Coverage - We summarized all the warranties.

I've been using the Dewalt 735X in my shop for about 7 years and I love that planer. I haven't read the accompanying article to this video, so I might be mentioning a few things that they've already mentioned that were skipped in the video. The 735 is a beast at 90+ lbs and that's a good thing. There have been many times I've planned an 8 foot long 8/4 board and that planer didn't even think about tipping. Of course I used external work supports but still, you don't have to worry about the heavy boards shifting the machine in any way. Second, it has an internal blower that forcefully eject the wood chips. That means that you don't really have to connect it to a vacuum/dust collector. If you're setting up a shop on a budget and only have a shop vac, no worries. You can leave the shop vac hooked to your other gear. This planer doesn't need it. I built a cabinet cart for this planer that has a built in baffle , filter and exhaust port. I feed the 4" hose from the planer into the cabinet. All of the wood chips are collected inside. After each heavy milling session, I open the cabinet and shovel out the chips (filling a 33 gallon trash bag), and shake the dust out of the filter. The filters cost me a few dollars each at the big box store. Once a year, I toss the filter and insert a new one. Blade changes are easy and the blades are double edged, so that you can take them out and turn them around to a fresh sharp edge. They're also slotted so that you and shift them a little from side-to-side. Thus if you get a nick in your blades, all you have to do is off set them from each other so that the nick is staggered. This eliminates it showing up on your planed boards, further getting more use out of a set of blades. I run my planer on a 15 amp circuit without any issues or heating, but I've never removed 3/32" like they did in the test. My max cut is usually 1/16" and my typical cut 1/32". Each revolution of the height adjustment crank is 1/16" and I've easily adjusted my depth of cut reliably down below 1/128" increments. You can nudge that crank to take off a few 1/1000s of an inch. Much faster than hitting it with a hand plane. Just use the hand plane to remove any mill marks, which you won't have many of when removing less than 1/128" as a final pass. Oh, there's also a 'finish quality' speed that pushes the board through at half the speed rate letting the knives take twice as many cuts along the board, yielding an extremely smooth surface. To be honest, I've rarely used this feature for that. I use it to simply slow down my overall planning operation when I have a lot of boards to plane and I'm working alone. This gives me time to grab the boards as they exit the planer and stack them while still feeding in another board butted up against the one currently being planed. You only get snipe on the front edge of the first board (which can be scrap) and the back edge of the very last board (which can be the same piece of scrap), thus if you don't want to waste stock cutting off the snipe, just feed your multiple boards through as one very long continuous board. Anyway, that's when I use the slow speed. Fantastic planer!

Your comment on the chip blower makes a huge difference on the dust collection effectiveness. Without such an arrangement, you typically need much more of a DC (CFM- wise) to collect all the chips without clogging. The setup you describe with a stand containing the dust chip bin sounds like the way to go. Why take apart the DC bag constantly (total PITA) when your method is much easier. I would also add that for those of us with a single stage, smaller size, DC (like the HF), it is very likely to end up with clogs. My old Grizzly 6" jointer would clog that short piece of flex line constantly. The addition of rigid PVC piping and a Rockler style chip separator made all the difference. If I may ask, how are the Dewalt OEM blades for lifespan? Have you tried these against aftermarket units? Thanks for sharing your experience on this unit. It is likely my next big purchase.

Great presentation, you fellas worked hard. I own the Makita for two-years now, change the blades when it begins to pound the wood(twice a year on average) I dress the blades on a diamond-plate every few months. I like the machine overall, I will purchase the shelix head this year when it's available(costs more than the machine, but long-term satisfaction.) I think the quality of this Makita can be a life-time tool.

I think it is assumed that this entire category is for DIYers, maybe prosumer grade maybe, but no pro grade shop is buying a lunchbox style planer, they’re getting an $8,000+ floor standing planer. So I think they didn’t really address that too much because they kind of assume “these are all *mostly* budget friendly, you decide what price/quality best suits your level of DIY needs” I’m looking to buy one and I’m looking at the more expensive DeWalt, I’m a DIYer but I’m not going to use to all the time but my mentality is you get what you pay for, I’d rather shell out an extra $250 for a great planer than something I’ll want to upgrade a few years later.

I just bought a Dewalt 735X , it came with the extra tables and spare blades. The finish of the boards after planing was awesome and just as your testing showed it mows thru the boards. I love it and so look forwards to using this in my shop

I have had the Jet surface planer for over 20 years and a Ryobi for close to 15 years While not the latest and the greatest, they have run thousands of linear feet of boards flawlessly. I have however had my eye on the 735x for a good number of years and once I get the big shop built, I will be adding to my collection.

I had the 735x. I now have the 734 and its a much better machine. The 735x is a ferrari when your need an pickup truck. It has all the bells and whistles but its still stuck in the mud. 734 is a superior machine

@@dougk.5501 Just bought a 735. Came with crappy blades that only lasted about 10 minutes per side running new fir 2x4's. Snipe is worse than any other machine I've owned. Finish is not near as good as advertised. Will heed your advise and return this one and try the 734.

I love the head to head stuff you guys do and for me the Dewalt has been ahead for a long time. It's just the better planer and miles ahead of the rest. It has a lot of the features the pros have on their stationary planers like two speeds and the like. It's probably one that a lot of pros use now because it doesn't take the room a stationary one will take and for what it does I doubt there's a lot of planners anywhere close to that price range will do what it can do. Warranty well that isn't a major thing for me. All these will outlast the warranty and the thing that will fail is the rollers and I doubt any of the warranties cover those. And wax the table. It will make everything better.

I was so excited when I saw this video in my sub box. I always had a feeling the dewalt 735 was the best. But for me it had to be the 734 since I got a steal on it. Some guy had it sitting around and never used it. He was moving out of state and just wanted to get rid of it. $150 brand new factory sealed, can't go wrong with that. I’ve used the dewalt and think fairly highly of it. I’ve owned the delta planers and basically through them in the garbage where they belong. Chips(regardless of dust extraction) consistently wedged in between the knife locking bar and under the blades warping that lock bar. Also, even if I’d only run the machine for a couple of minutes the motor housing would be hot to the touch. I’ve had the Makita for10 years (fortunately I paid $400 for it) and I’ve found the performance superior to most including the finish. I can run it all day putting maple through it and the motor is cool to the touch. It’s just really well built.

Great article... As a former owner of a Dewalt 735X, I concur with your findings... I "upgraded" to a 15" General Tools planer and honestly I miss the lack of snipe and fine finish the 735X provided. I rarely use the increased capacity and miss the small form factor of the 735X. One thing I will say about the 735X is that it was LOUD! Nothing some ear muffs can't fix, but worth noting none the less. I purchased the Infinity Tools carbide tipped blades for my 735X, and they were still razor sharp when I sold it to a fellow woodworker. I wonder if he still has it and would be willing to sell it back to me... :)

I love your detailed tool comparisons, but I would make a case to throw a harbor freight brand tool into the mix as well. I know your a top level pro, and there's no way you would ever use them, but I would argue by far most of your viewers are just home owners and we often consider the Harbor Freight stuff from time to time. Especially when it comes to tools we just wouldn't use that often, such as a planer. And if nothing else, this would be a great showcase on how far less superior one them may be to something even on the lower end of what you're already testing. This may convince someone considering a Harbor Freight tool, that spending a bit more, is far and away the better option. Keep the videos coming sir!

I want to know how good it is; how bad it is; and essentially what spending each extra dollar, what that buys me: or if there are hidden gems allowing someone a decent entry point or a stepping stone to future upgrades

One of the things that a comparison video like this can’t very well determine is longevity or how well a tool works after extensive use. Most tools work pretty well when new, but how well will the planer you buy work 2-3 years and a couple of thousand feet of lumber, later ? That’s where the real question of quality and durability come into play. If a guy has a small budget and limited use for a tool then the cheaper option will probably suffice. I’ve owned a Foley-Belsaw, a Delta and two Rigid planers and have gotten good service out of all. The Dewalt and the Mikita are loved by my friends that own them and I think they’re good machines. Except for the price I would probably own one or the other. They’re not very portable, weight wise, however. There are so many factors that determine what someone might end up with. It was always a matter of price plus effectiveness for me. I’m pretty sure I’d go with the Rigid again especially considering that they now have a 3 blade cutter head. You can almost buy 2 of them for the price of the Dewalt or Makita and if used properly do pretty much the same quality of work. Just my 2 cents.

Very comprehensive research on the planers. I had the DeWalt DW735X in my cart on Amazon and not having used a planer before, I deciede to do some more research. I am glad that I saw this video. Good job, Well done.

I've had the Dewalt 735 for a number of years and am very happy with it, the only knock I have in it is the blades do wear quickly in my opinion.. maybe it's because I mill a lot of rough sawn lumber?

Having spent the extra money.. worth it. Amazon had the 735x for 499 a while back. Home depot, online only thought the chat, not in store... they operate differently, will price match.

I did alot of homework and went with the 735X before this video. Set it up last week and planned some 3 1/4 × 1 3/4 red oak I have had for 10 years. Made a shelf 5/4 thick x 12wide. After glue up ran 12" board thru the planer. Had uniform thickness and virtually no sanding was required before finish was applied. Am very happy with my investment in this planner.

That’s the one to buy IMO. It’s a lot closer to ‘stationary’ 220v/15”+ shop planer performance than any of the breadbox planers. That said we also have a DeWalt 734 which is surprisingly good - but it’s a 3-blade model. I think (?) they also made a 2-blade version. 3 blades def the way to go.
