It has nothing to do with bitrate and everything to do with PROCESSING LEVEL. You'll get lower bitrates and higher quality if you increase the processing level which Handbrake allows you to do. Take more time to compress your videos.

I remember doing a bunch of tests of my own years ago to find the best compromise of file size/render time/visual quality. Took me days to settle on something and haven't dared look into it again. I would've killed for something like this back then! It just so happens that I've upgraded my rig recently and can now afford both bigger files and higher bitrate due to faster hardware, so I'm incredibly thankful I didn't have do all those rest renders again. Thanks for all the hard work that went into this! I sure do appreciate it and I'm sure many others do as well

I can not thank you enough for this video. Time and time I'd render an almost lossless 1080p video in DaVinci and when I upload it on KZbin, I didn't even want to look at it due to the quality loss. After watching your video yesterday, I tested it out by privately uploading an 1440p upscaled version of the same 1080p video that I had published on my channel recently and then played them side by side. The difference in quality was significant. Upscaled 1440p looked way better than the native 1080p. Obviously, the best thing would be to buy a 1440p monitor to capture videos in native 1440p resolution but for the time time being, this will do for me till I am able to save the money to go for a decent 1440p monitor (preferably oled🤑). I have also seen people on KZbin suggesting super scale feature in DaVinci. But that feature is for the studio version which cost quite a lot in my currency. If you have had the opportunity to use DaVinci Resolve Studio, please share your thoughts on the super scale feature. Will you suggest it over buying a 1440p monitor?
@TechGuides
@TechGuides 29 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching buddy! I don't even own the Studio version of Resolve so I have no idea how good the super scale feature is. From my experience though, rendering a regular old 1080p in 1440p with a bit of sharpener added looks pretty much perfect so I personally would not bother. I used to even upscale 1080p footage to 4K and that still looked fine at 1440p ;)

thanks! i only have 15Mbps (Upload Speed) and my streams have a lot of "garbage", so what i did is: 1- upscale my 1080p res to 1440p to get VP9 2- Put youtube in normal mode (30 sec delay) to get some time to the platform to get a better image in my stream 3- Bitrate to 13000 (youtube says 6k to 30k for 1440p) 4- and use HEVC because this code reduce 1/2 the amount of bitrate usage for the same quality yeah, i got some garbage in Final Fantasy 14 for example when moving, but a lot less gargabe than 1080p with 6000 bitrate. Its not a perfect quality, but its ok. Sadly i cant for now get better upload speed, but i prefer getp VP9 with 1440p than use 1080p AVC1.

Thanks I used your previous video to have a point of reference for 1080p->1440p when I first started. However some videos later I'd like to add my findings and empirical experiences: Due to how the codec algo works when lots of pixels are changing (very common in games as opposed to real shootings with static background) you need as much bitrate bandwidth as you can get. This means that regardless of the resulting single VMAF number score that may say "1% difference", higher bitrate videos have a cleaner picture when everything on screen is moving, because this is where bitrate is strapped and if there's not enough in that one moment the quality degrades. In practice a 100mbps game video is going to be (arguably visibly) cleaner than a ~70mbps one despite the VMAF saying there is not much difference. Also if youtube transcodes again into vp09 as the final rendering, then ideally the upload version should be as close as possible to the raw recording (and not an intermediate step that further degrades quality). I resorted to use the maximum configurable bitrate for recording 1080p (100mbps in radeon relive, OBS should have no limit) and same 100mbps when rendering into upscaled 1440p, and I let the youtube vp09 work on it.

YT can be so stupid sometimes. They would save themselves a huge amount of data and speed up the upload and re-encode process if they would just do a better job of handling 1080p video instead of degrading image quality in the process.

Would you happen to have any input, or a video on what color formats to use? E.g., NV12 8bit 4:2:0 2 planes vs something like I444 8bit 4:4:4 3 planes. KZbin reccomends 4:2:0 color subsampling for non hdr content. But they also reccomend .264 encoder. Im not sure how much I trust their own reccomendations.

You are the first result when I google this specific question that provides useful information. Regardless of how precise I am in search (emphasizing recording not streaming) the first slee of results give some insanely low number (most I think are addressing streaming and not recording). I still struggle with this and I use the ms paint of video editing software - I have been recording at 65000 kpbs and then bc of all the transitions and fades I mix down the edited content at 240000 kpbs. I just increased my obs recording bit rate to 85000 kpbs for a yet to be released video I'm working on. At some point I was using way higher bc my old recording files were like 15 gigs for 10 mins of recording - I think I know the video I used that for and it does look better. I have started to mix down at 4k despite tte native recording resolution bing in 1080, not sure if tgat helps for KZbin but I read things I guess. Just discovered this channel, maybe I'll learn it right for now on.

You can find many threads on Reddit and other boards where people are asking for help in bettering their KZbin videos quality, and the "experts" respond there with absolute confidence that upscaling doesn't improve the quality at all. Technically that's true, but not in the case of KZbin. Firstly, there is the AVC1 -> VP9 trigger at 1440p that you mentioned here, and secondly, KZbin allocates more bitrate in general for videos of higher resolution. Yes, it is even beneficial to upscale from 720p to 1080p, which is a useful tip for people who record retro games.

When you set the davinci project settings to 1440p then drag in 1080p footage, doesn't it stretch that footage to fill the canvas and make it look awful? I'm just a bit confused, I was thinking when working with 1080p 50k bitrate footage you would keep your davinci project's timeline settings at 1080p to edit the whole video, then in the render tab you would choose 1440p 60k bitrate, and it would work some sort of space magic to make it better haha. Can you clarify? Thanks!
@TechGuides
@TechGuides 8 ай бұрын
So when you drag in the first clip Davinci Resolve always asks if you want to adjust the canvas settings. I always drag the highest res clip that I will want to work with in first to let Resolve select the appropriate project settings. Then right before rendering I just change the Project Settings to 4K and render. I think (though I have never actually tested this) this is recommended over leaving the project settings, say at 1440p, and using a higher render resolution in the render tab since there appears a warning if you attempt to do this. From my experience this works perfectly even with a 1080p clip.

If you live in a place with fast internet this is totally fine. But if your upload speed is limited, nothing in this video makes sense for said case scenario. Could you say actual bitrates people can use with a 12Mb upload for 1080p@30fps? Also, I think it's just bad from KZbin to not use VP9 on 1080p content, it's like people still using it being stuck 10 years in the past for quality. I was told in OBS, to use 1920x1080 and upscale 1920x1080. My monitor res is 1920x1080. I have a Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070. My upload is 22 mbps. I was also told to set kbps to 10,000-12,500 but someone else said 18,000. Then I was told 18,000kbps was overkill. Then I see they say to go with 20,000 sub 3 so go with 17,000kbps (incase of dropped frames/lag). I am so confused here. I am a new channel and starting out. I have tested videos and they pretty much all look the same. I go to KZbin Studio and create a custom 1440p stream key and place that into OBS. I use H.246 coding. If I record like mentioned in this video, I would need to increase it to 80.000 kbps which sounds a bit much? Also do you only talk about DaVinci Rendering kbps or also on OBS recordings? Upload was for about 1.5-2hrs and processing was completed but said: "Still processing" and never made to complete even after 24hrs, therefore had to delete it and still trying to lowering bitrate and fps to get it to process. Also used "send feedback" method a couple of times which failed to show me success. Am I doing something wrong?

Hey there! Sorry for the delayed response but I think with 1hr+ long gameplays you just have to be super patient. The 4K processing will inevitably take long and could probably take more than a day if you're unlucky. Sometimes my videos are processed within minutes, other times it takes hours (for ~10min long videos)

OK, now I have a problem. So I've been recording with Nvidia Nvenc h264 at 10000 kbps CBR. Most footage looks good and the overall size of the files is small (I have 7TB on my PC and still almost at full with all the VideoGame series I record, roughly I have recordings that are 5hours long x 20 to finish the series) But everyone was saying to switch to H265 for smaller sizes. GREAT, so I watched your previous video, but then you said to record at 1440p (which will increase the file size) and also that the minimum should be 60k bitrate. I use 10k. What do I do?
@TechGuides
@TechGuides 25 күн бұрын
You have a 1440p display though right? If so I would definitely recommend recording at H265. But 10k is definitely too low in my oppinion. You could try to use CQP at a level of about 20 instead but then editing might become laggy...

@@TechGuides I played for 7 minutes the same mission in Halo 2 with 4 different things. 1st was H264 1440p 60fps with cbr 12kbps 2nd was h265 1440p 60fps with CQP at 23 3rd was h265 1440p 60fps with Cbr 12kbps 4th was h264 1080p 30fps with Cbr 12kbps My result was around 600Mb for a 7-minute clip for Every single CBR. Almost the same visuals as I use a Speedrun strat that generally looks the same. So I knew I had a level playing field. Nothing changed in terms of weight between h264/h265 or 1080p/1440p or 30/60fps. CQP was 3 GB!!!! For the same length, and only looked better in one instance where CBR was "struggling" (it just lost quality for a second in the same point for all 3, confirming we had a level playing field!) With these numbers, I'll take the 12kbps. And I will stay at h264 as it is less demanding in general (even for editing) Edit: roughly it takes 7,7MB a second for CQP vs the 1,47 for all CBR. My grounded series is 72 Hours long which makes it 384GB for CBR. With CQP it would have been 2TB!!!! OK! 1 series and I need a new SSD 😂

Would recording at 1080 and then rescaling to 1440 be the same as recording natively at 1440? Which option of the 2 would be better in terms of quality-storage? Sorry if i miss something, im using google traductor
@TechGuides
@TechGuides 9 ай бұрын
Not quite. The 1440p native recording would certainly be much sharper compared to the 1080p recording. Especially when you're playing in 1440p. So I would recommend 1440p ;)

@Gershy13
@Gershy13 11 ай бұрын
@@TechGuides I'm currently doing a 1080p to 1440p upscale when I stream to KZbin as streaming 1080p with high motion games is genuinely unbearable at native 1080p no matter what bitrate. It's not too bad for me performance wise using nvenc on a 3070. I'd love to see a video on the quality differences exactly like this one, and maybe also a performance analysis too? For instance the different nvenc OBS presets, and using the canvas scale method or the encoder output scale method.
@TechGuides
@TechGuides 11 ай бұрын
I see! Yes I have actually a very old video where I compared exactly that - the performance impact and resulting quality of the different upscaling options. As I mentioned, its pretty old so I should probably do an update :)
@Gershy13
@Gershy13 11 ай бұрын
@@TechGuides Yeah, the new nvenc has quality presents and with KZbin's high bitrate support, it might be a good option to reduce the preset for less performance hit while increasing the bitrate if your network can handle it. I do also remember hearing somewhere, it might have been EposVox, but apparently the hevc Nvidia encoder is sometimes more efficient and uses less performance than the h264 one.

Of course I do ;) I would not advice it. I actually once tested this and the native resolution at a high bitrate in OBS produces the best raw video which can then be easily upscaled when editing.

Don't worry, upload speed does not affect the final video quality. If you record at 1440p then definitely also render at 1440p. The final video on YT will be much better quality than if you would render 1080p because of the inferior codec which is assigned to 1080p content.
