We sent Howard Ritchie to a Volkswagen driving day in Oxford. His mission? To take advantage of the free lunch... and get his hands on the "secret weapon of the company car fleet", the new Volkswagen Passat. It starts from just over £200 per month to lease currently, which we think is a steal.
With the new Passat GTE just launched and clever new engines both in petrol and diesel we investigate which of the engines might be worth a look from the 1.5 TSI to the 2.0 TDI.

For me vw make some of the best cars on the road, I have the vw passat 2.0 tdi scr b8 R Line Estate, 7 speed dsg and I love it. Its easy car to live with and I love the drive, I've always been a fan of estate cars, as I have no need for over weight terrible MPG Suv, no thank you. My R line trumps them all, bomb proof Engine, great paddle shift on steering wheel, love all the space love the R Line seats, drives fantastic, great looking car for an R Line, it's just a great car around and u like my car to do many things a bit sporty, huge boot when I need it and comfort, great MPG, and relaxing, I highly Recommend the b8 passat Estate all day long, some great bargains out there if you take time to look around for a few months the right model comes along, very happy chappy 😁👌👍

Some 20+ years ago, I was given a VW Passat Estate to try for a week to see if I wanted one. And I can honest... Hones... Hone... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... Needless to say, I didn't get one. But these latest models are so, so different. OK! They're still not the most riveting car we've seen you drive. Not by a long way. But they look pretty decent from the outside and that's how most people are going to be viewing this car. Loved the bit about the "non options" list. But the pie did look nice :-))... Have you heard anything from the BBC yet about Top Gear? 🤔

I would not hesitate to buy the passat alltrack with the 239 ps bi- turbo tdi The 1.5 tsi would stress out for such a heavy car

PASSAT B8 which this car basicaly is was car of the year 2015!

You *can* go wrong, however, with the 1.5TSI which is flawed and VW have been unable to fix it for nearly 2 years.

elvis1231 Has a terrible judder in low gears and hesitates on take off. Can be pretty dangerous. Google “VW 1.5 TSI problems”, it’s discussed on all of VAG forums. Same engine used in Seat, Skoda and Audi too so affects them too. My car has it and I’m currently trying to reject it.
