I love seeing places like this! For me this is a typical scene from the north of Thailand. It's also great to see kids swimming in and enjoying the river not like their western counterparts sitting at home in front of an X box/Play station device. I rode the Mae Hong Son Loop last December and loved it,

what a great find, sitting under the shady trees watching the local children having fun in the river, getting served wonderful food by the beautiful girls! i'm with Dave here, the toilets get 10/10 from me! and the rest of the experience may be normal for Thais but for me (and clearly Dave too) places like this are a wonderful discovery oh, i'm guessing the red colour is from betel nuts. hugs to you both
