Subscribed ! Question(s). Can a 1tb iPhone 15 bypass the need to film with an SSD on the camera body and just off load the 1TB to the SSD when it’s full? And then you’d just need a 1tb iPhone and an attachment for an ND filter and use Blackmagic and internal LUT? If so I’m getting one today!
@Nata-ch2bkАй бұрын
If you're filming in HEVC (which a lot of people recommend, the difference in quality with ProRes being barely noticeable), you don't even need 1TB to record on your phone. For ProRes 1TB would help to record on the phone but it would still fill up decently quick so it depends how long you want to film before having to transfer. Also one thing I would consider, although I'm not so sure about that one, is that filling your iPhone memory and then loading it off all the time might deteriorate the iPhone memory in the long run?

The iPhone 15 Pros with BMC app have been a game changer for me. Thanks for your clear and pertinent video.
@digitaldevigner4080 Жыл бұрын
I do not agree with the ISO 1250 advice at all. The iPhone quality really suffers when you raise the ISO. Even if you may not see noise its because the camera uses very aggressive noise reduction which leads to very blotchy details and mush. Yes it lifts the clip point so you get more highlight stops but you destroy the fidelity of the video by doing so. It's much better to shoot under exposed like everyone else is suggesting. Apple log maps a ton of stops below middle gray and only 3 stops over middle gray. By shooting under by just 2 stops we now have 5 stops over middle gray or much closer to other log formats. Some of the best log formats typically only have 6 stops over middle gray. While shooting under is typically not the best choice the way the iPhone and Apple Log work there is a ton of detail in the shadows and it is much cleaner to shoot under vs using ISO 1250. You still get a lot of highlight range if you need it but much cleaner details. Plus one really needs to determine if they really need that many highlight stops of range. Getting 6 stops over middle gray only to crush it down to rec709 is kind of pointless. Log formats are not a one size fits all format. They are made so we can choose what is more important for the shot. Shadow stops or highlight stops. Sort of like how the BMD Pocket cameras work. ISO is used to determine how the stops are mapped under vs over middle gray. Apple Log at lower ISO levels clip sooner in the highlights but thats because more of the stops are mapped in the shadows below middle gray. The details 99% more likely to be seen and have importance to the story. Another reason ISO 1250 is not a good suggestion is because a lot of narrative work tends to be lit to be lower contrast and fit much better within a limited rec709 range. We rarely have details that go over 90% reflectance and just don't need a lot of extra highlight stops. They become pointless and a large throw away portion of the log curve values. Apple Log as it is is well suited for this since it easily covers a normal contrast range for rec709. Shooting at ISO 1250 would not really gain anything extra and what it did gain would likely be thrown out. Dynamic range is nice to have but not at the expense of sacrificing everything else important just to say you have more stops of range. Those stops need to serve a purpose. Finally ISO 55 outdoors in bright sunlight and 24p 1/48th already requires at least 7 stops of ND filtering. If shooting two stops under thats 9 stops of filtering which is a lot. Shooting at ISO 1250 is almost 5 stops more ND filtering needed. Thats at least 12 stops of ND filtering which is an insane amount. Its hard enough finding a decent filter system for the iPhone and a real challenge trying to use 12 stops of filtering.

Anywhere I shoot, inside or outside it's way too bright at 1/48 shutter with an iso at 1250 ISO unless it's nighttime another isn't any light but with any sort of lighting it's way too bright. Does increasing the shutter speed somehow compromise the dynamic range? I assume the only thing that affects the dynamic range in this example is the ISO and the shutter can be anything above 1/48.

did u find any help im struggling with the same issue right now when i locked my shutter to 180 degree and its just insanely bright in the sun or outside the house what do i do (i dont wanna buy an ND filter)
@Nata-ch2bkАй бұрын
@@realpnthr With 1/48 (or 180°) and ISO 1250, I think the only option is the ND filter. If you don't want an ND filter, I would first suggest to get the ISO lower (down to 100 maybe?) and if it's still too bright, boost the shutter speed up to 1/1000 (or more if needed). But of course you will loose the benefits of the 180° shutter speed and higher ISO (that one is debatable though, some people seem to think you don't need such a high ISO). If you want to keep those benefits you need a ND filter to adjust the exposure

Extremely useful tutorial, thank you! So many out there that don't explain the quirks of exposure in BMC, but you did a really good job. Here's a question: Why do you think there's no "AUTO" option in ISO? I wish I could lock the shutter speed for motion blur, but then have ISO be the wildcard that it uses for auto exposure. I don't see why that couldn't be an option, with an [AUTO] button at the top so you could disable it and go full manual. Maybe there's some expsure-triangle reason why it's not possible that I'm not thinking of... Do you know? Or should we be lobbying BM to update it 😅 (my ND filter and Neewer mounting cage are on their way. Like you say, I don't WANT to rig it up, but it does look like it's simply necessary to use filters, just like it is on all but the most outrageously expensive cinema cameras)

Because apparently Apple doesn't give you control over that. These developers have to develop their own algorithms to sorta fake it. The Dji app does auto iso when I use my gimbal. It's great. Sir, excuse: download for the first time ever the Black Magic app. Test it not 4K because I use lower iPhone SE 2020. I write you because of the audio inbuilt microphone of the iPhone that gives a lot of noises. Is there an setting for to normalize the audio sound. Thanks for your presentation, I made screenshot of the ISO and shutter speed settings because I hope off course it will help on 1920 etc. Luc

do you know why when I take a video with the application when I upload it to my photo gallery The file size is much smaller than that on the application

With that high iso you need to deal with the added noise in post, simply by doing what the camera already does automatically when you lower the iso. Yes you would get more dynamic range but you have to expose for the highlights and be prepared to crush the blacks to control noise, if I understand Gerald undone correctly.

Just to clarify, if you don’t expose to the right you will actually end up with more noise than with a lower iso. With min iso you are basically guaranteed 12.8 stops of clean dynamic range, which is still awesome and you don’t have to worry about exposure as much. In fact I get the same image from at least one full stop overexposed and one full stop underexposed when shooting log in high contrast situations like a sunny day so I don’t have to worry too much about getting perfect exposure every time, and this is why I like the 15 pro so much.

High ISO doesn't create noise- low light does. High ISO just shows you how much noise has been created due to such low light

@@giannobong6778 exactly so what I’m saying is that there’s no point In using an nd filter or faster shutter speed just to be able to use a higher use for higher dynamic range as implied here.

Any tips for shooting log via black magic in high light snowy mountains (I’ll be in Alaska) ? I did just get the polarpro nd case/filter for the 15 pro. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I’m very new to shooting in log

Hello there, with these settings (HEVC and Apple Log HDR), I can't import the files to DaVinci. It shows only the sound line. Can somebody help me?

Great video!! thank you, it was very helpful. Question: when trying to use the Blackmagic app with the iPhone 15 Pro it will not recognize the Samsung SSD drive I have plugged in can you advise me on this? Thanks Dave J
@whoismatt8 ай бұрын
Hey! You may need to reformat the external SSD. Try using exFAT

@@DavidJonesImages I think it doesn't recognize it automatically like the iPhone camera app does. You have to go in the Black Magic cam settings and choose for the app to record to the SSD, if I am not mistaken
