I believe in the philosophy of developing one’s philosophy over time through one’s life experiences rather than influenced by someone else’s thoughts. When you start practicing thinking, over time you will think greater thoughts. You don’t need philosophy books, they only hinder the possibilities of your mind. I see most people read such books only to look cool, and I believe the same is the case with the ones who wrote them.
@philosophizing_existence4 ай бұрын
Agree. It's better to learn HOW to think than WHAT to think.
@adi-qx8ls4 ай бұрын
Nah going through academic process is much better bcs for most of the people doesn't actually have that capacity to philosophise from the very beginning, getting certain level of awareness about the development of historical genesis of philosophy and current day philosophy will be more fruitful and effective way rather than assessing one's life and making meaningful judgement and deductions from it, like lol there's very little scope in it. How could you make deductions about logic, philosophy of science, mathematics, history, epistemology, etc. without going into the subject matter?
@adi-qx8ls4 ай бұрын
Also until and unless you doesn't actually interact with the thoughts of the named personalities mentioned here, you doesn't have any right to claim that they did so just to be pretentious, like come on there's a reason why millions of people read and research on their writings. That's a very shallow assessment from your side, which also further proved my point that until and unless you doesn't have a flair for philosophically inclined thinking, you can't develop that level of depth with in your thoughts without going through the written text material.

it always amuses me that none of these so called book influencers from India recommend vedant, geeta and upanishads in philosophy recommendations. they will recommend all sorts of books from around the world but miss the gem from (probably the best ever books till now) from their own country. I don't know whether it is deliberate or they are genuinely ignorant.

Funny thing is the stalwarts like Arthur Schopenhauer said that Upanishads are the pinnacle a human mind can achieve. Neitze held Buddhism in very high regard and he saw varna vyavastha in good light. Well, they probably think it's down class to read Indic philosophy.
@NabaneetSharma-u6v3 күн бұрын
I’m interested in both Western and Eastern philosophy and what I’ve observed is that although the Eastern texts are more insightful and dives deeper into the human condition, the western texts let you follow through their process of concluding a certain idea and also lets you navigate the context with related ideas and finally turning it into a bigger picture. Indian and other Asian texts just give you the idea and jump on to something else. I’m talking with respect to the 10 famous Upanishads and Bhagavat Gita. I think it’s because eastern philosophy came around with the purpose of Indoctrination. They’re like handbooks of wisdom while the western(not Greek but German and other modern ones) ones were written with the purpose of professing their philosophy and making a contribution to the academia of philosophy, which makes them prone to further questioning. Which is why Western texts will teach you how to philosophize by yourself. While a book like the Upanishads contain the amount of wisdom that can equate 10-20s of such Western texts of the highest quality, they don’t guide you in the process of your own thinking.

Dostoevsky for his understanding of human psyche. Nietzsche for his strong prose and his dissection of morality in a societal setting. Camus for the vagueness of the existential feeling as well as the existential person (more precisely the plane of consciousness that he calls the absurd). And lastly, Kafka because he's Kafka. He's in his own league and there could be no motivation to read his books. You just have to read them.

I think Dostoyevsky's "Notes from the Underground" is probably not a good introduction, especially for people who are just getting into Philosophy. The first part is the Underground man just explaining himself and his ideology - a ideology based in spite and sickness - which can be off putting to many. Instead i would recommend Crime and Punishment . It is a better introduction to Dostoyevsky, even though it is the longer of the two, it is more engaging as we follow the psychological turmoil of Raskalnikov after what he does to the lousy pawnbroker.
