Dear Marie-Anne, Thank you for showing us these Breton tops--so helpful. You look lovely in them all, especially with the frilly blouse under one of them. I would have never thought of that combination. Leave it to you to bring elegance to a casual top! Believe it or not, when Banana Republic was first established as a private boutique by Patricia and Mel Ziegler in little Mill Valley, California--just the one itty bitty store--they sold military surplus clothing and even canteens, and yes, Ready-To-Eat Military meals! I bought a Breton top from the French Navy there, and I loved it, very high quality. I wish that I still had it. I wear the Breton top for years in Toronto; it was so difficult to get in the 80's I have to order from Europe; my friends call me Breton lady as I have around 25 pieces....I like especially French and English and some are made of 'rough Silk' which looks like a cotton. Cannot wait to put them on in very soon as the weather is Summery now. Cheers Madame from Toronto! I wear often 'nonchalant' and with the silk scarf of many many colours and silk only. I purchased a Breton from FatFace (UK-sustainable-$46 USD) and it is VERY well made. The knit is substantial, with a boat neck, and a curved hemline. It comes in several color combinations --highly recommend!

As a woman of limited means I am not able purchase some clothing items due to their price. But I have a boat neck, 3/4 length sleeve, striped top that I purchased at Walmart of all places. It is white with thin navy stripes. I wash my clothes on delicate cycle and hang to dry. It still looks terrific after a large number of years. I wear the top with dark wash jeans and navy or black loafers/flats. I am proof that you can look stylish and classic even on a small budget.

I’ve always had at least one Mariniere in my wardrobe since I began college 42 years ago. I remember my first one, it was from Marimekko, expensive for it’s day, but lasted forever. Now I have lots of colors and wear them a lot. They’re not supposed to “look good on me” because I have a larger bust, but I just buy them sized so that there is no strain across the bust and I think they look great on. I love them with my white jeans, linen pants or navy trousers and skirts. They are so comfy and versatile, and so classic and chic.

I have all my life believed that the stripe blouses are not suited for me, that somehow they are to strong of a pattern and cancel my figures. But ever since I started to follow your channel, I have found the perfect marinieres for me - the ones that haven't got stripes in the upper part, so they are rather white near the face and the stripes start just around the chest. I have bought several and wear them on repeat. Now the same struggle with the red lipstick. Boy, I have tried, but I look weird - maybe because of the fact that I wear no make up on day to day life. But I do not give up yet, like you said earlier: there is a shade of red for everyone. I love the Breton top - I have several styles of it in black/white , navy/white , camel/white . One of my recent and now favourite buys is a French Connection version that is grey/white . It goes with much in my wardrobe and is really attractive with a grey cardigan for extra warmth on top . Never have I spent $300 on one - the most was $95 .

Marie-Anne, I have not seen the Armor Luxe brand before, but I quite like that particular top. I opted for the Navy with white stripes as one of my choices, and the white with blue (like yours) as my other choice. I have a lovely Breton top from Everlane that is at least 4 years old and still looks great. It's heavy cotton with a nice boatneck, side splits, and a slightly cropped length that works well on my petite frame. My favorite way to wear it is with jeans-white in spring and summer, black or indigo in fall and winter--but I have also been known to wear it with a black pencil skirt and sneakers or ballet flats, or over or under a black slip dress. It's definitely one of the workhorses in my closet!
