That's the problem. "Reliable experts" are hard to find, even if one is willing to pay, and even then they will likely not outperform a basic ETF like spy ETFs. If you have any notable recommendations, feel free to share.

I’ve also signed up to sharesies as i’m currently researching individual companies (stocks to value invest in) so timing for their release of individual equities should be perfect for when I come to trade, other than that I just have some index funds. Hey Tom. Amazing videos coming out from you, really needed a Kiwi with some good insight into the NZ markets. I'm only 18 trying to invest what little I have into some companies through ASB securities, love them apart from the fees on small investments. Also think Hatch is super decent, fees are super good atm although USD exchange rates are pretty bad right now. Was wondering what you thought about the looming recession, do you think this will be worldwide? If so do you think it will hit NZ as hard as the US?

Hi Tom I’m also in Hamilton, New Zealand, currently have 25k in 8 month term deposit with ANZ which will only return $500, term ends in March 2020. Should i do this term deposit again or do you think investing it myself through Hatch or Investnow will be more profitable? I have downloaded Hatch but fearful to use it...have 5k in cash currently. Is there a way we in NZ can invest directly with index funds like Vanguard Mutual Index without brokers. Park it with their longer term funds with no middle man, and reinvest any dividends straight back into more share allocations (save dead money and exchange fees)?

I could be wrong, but my understanding is no. There's a 0.34% expense ratio for investing in the S&P 500 using the Smartshares US500 ETF, no top of the Vanguard fees (ETF inception). You can buy into Vanguard ETFs directly with Hatch, although they don't currently have a dividend reinvestment plan option (apparently they're working on this!)
