As a professional I have two EOS Rs which I've had for several years. They are great cameras and I use them all the time. Photo quality is excellent. I also have the 85mm F/2 and I love it for portrait work. I do some street photography just as a hobby, I don't make any money from it, and for that I use a Canon EOS RP. This camera is amazing. I'm always impressed by the images coming from the RP. It's also small enough to easily carry around. I typically shoot the RP with a 50mm F1.8 but I also carry an 85mm F/2 in my bag. But I could actually use the RP when I do my professional work if I wanted to--it's not strictly for amateurs. Amazing cameras. You did an excellent job. I don't shoot video, so I'm not interested in what any camera does with video capabilities.

Thanks. Ive been a professional portrait/fashion photographer for 18 years now. Best BUDGET setup for portraits IMO is the R10 and the RF 50 f/1.8 You get a camera with a great sensor, fantastic AF and a cheap but very good 85mm equivalent (81mm) lens with the crop sensor for under $1k. Thats $500 cheaper than just an R8 body. I just did a shoot for a modeling agency using this combo along with the RF 35 f/1.8 and it worked wonderfully. I even used the 18-45 kit lens indoors with lights where I was up around f/6.3 anyways and those look great too. Cant beat it for the price. Runner up would be the RP, which Canon has refurbished right now for only $599. A steal IMO.

Got the R50 w/ the 18-45mm kit lense. Its okay. Picked up the 50mm on a solid sale. Definitely need to look at the 35mm to round out the kit for the photos im trying to get. Since the crop sensor and space available make it tricky to use.

Awesome video! Thank you so much! I have a question pertaining to photography. When people refer to “those Canon colours”, are they talking about raw files, or straight out of camera jpegs?
@JamesReader
@JamesReader Жыл бұрын
Thank you Wasim! I think it’s both RAW and JPEG but the straight out of camera JPEGS are generally the best representation of Canon colours, only because how RAW file colours are processed is very dependent on what software you use. Lightroom can process Canon RAWs quite a bit differently to Capture One for example.

I'm building out my lens kit for this. Starting with a 35mm 1.8 because that's my favorite. The big things I'm considering are image stabilization in the lenses (due to the R8 lacking it combined with the smaller size). The decision probably comes down to getting a zoom vs just getting the 85mm F2. I like the idea of going with a lens kit heavy in fast prime lens for this camera. The huge zoom lenses feel too large for this camera.

The Tamron EF 1.4 35mm is a wonderful, inexpensive lens and the Tamron EF 24-70 and 70 -200 EF are both excellent. I have been using them with the EOS R since the camera was released and I have been very happy. ! also use the Samyang 1.4 85mm but I am not sure if it is still available.

Hey Luke! I would personally recommend the RF 85mm F2. The Sigma is fantastic, but very big especially with the adapter. If you don't mind that, then it is a great value lens but I prefer the smaller RF lens. The AF is still quite slow to go from it's minimum focus distance in macro to normal I'm afraid.

Hi. I wasn't going to be looking for another camera for awhile, but was wondering for low-light photography, would you still recommend the older camera models? I keep going back between the RP, R, R8, and R6 mark I in consideration of price, while also wanting to be able to take nightime pictures.
@JamesReader
@JamesReader Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The EOS R keeps up really well with the R6 Mark 1 and the R5 in terms of high iso performance. I tested this in an earlier video and shared raw files for you to check out. Objectively the R6 mark 1 is probably the best low light performer but in reality they are all very close.

How’s the RF 24-104 do for action in low (gymnasium) lighting? Looking for a versatile RF option to keep in bag aside from my 70-200 2.8. I’ll primarily be shooting volleyball.
@JamesReader
@JamesReader Жыл бұрын
The best option for this would be the 28-70 f2. The constant f2 aperture will allot you to keep your iso lower and shutter speed higher, great for indoor sport in less than ideal lighting. A very expensive lens however so other options are adapting the EF 24-70 2.8 or as you mentioned the RF 24-105 if you are okay with pushing the ISO.

Thank you for the video. Do you think it’s worth considering buying a used Sigma 35mm ART 1.4? Will it have a better image? In price it is equal to the new RF 35mm 1.8. So I wondered if it was worth using it for work?
@JamesReader
@JamesReader 4 ай бұрын
Both lenses are great. You will get a little sharper image from the Sigma if you step it down to 1.8. Personally, having tried both, I preferred using the native RF 35mm 1.8 for its small size and weight. Image quality is pretty similar.

@@JamesReader Thank you! Canon RF has more chromatic aberrations. But I noticed that many people are really ready to sacrifice image quality for the sake of size and weight. I haven't started working much in this area yet. But does weight really have that much of an impact on comfort? 😅

Nice video. R8 or R6? which one is a good buy right now?
@JamesReader
@JamesReader Жыл бұрын
I would generally go with whatever you can get a better deal on. You can record longer on the R8 without overheating compared to the R6, if that’s important. If you need dual card slots and IBIS then R6 is the way to go. Image quality in photo and video are so comparable that you won’t notice a difference between the two.
@yuvaraajas
@yuvaraajas Жыл бұрын
@@JamesReader Thank you for responding. I'm not going to use it for video. Just concerned about the lack of IBIS on R8. Will this have an effect on the still image? I'm wondering about the advantages of IBIS on still photographs. If there is no impact, I will choose R8. Please share your ideas. I appreciate your time.

Should I choose r8 over R6 (mark I) ??
@nicofuentes7149

Could I bother you with a question. I'm deciding over a Eos R or a R8. With the 1.4 firmware update on the R it gets good eye tracking (witch the R8 has a great one in contrast) and I keep seeing the R8 has overheating and weather sealing problems where the R is a tank. I shoot portrait and fashion (not fast moving subjects, not video) and for commercial work I'm leaning to the 30 mgpx of the R (r5 is out of budget) but I keep wondering if the Dynamic range/shadow recovery/color/image quality of the R8 is that different to the R to justify less battery, no weather sealing, potencial overheating and 24 mgpx (most people say it doesnt matter but If you have worked with commercial clients, the ALWAYS want different crops after being told to get it on camera haha so more resolution for me is almost a must). I know lens quality is pivotal but I'm trying to see witch body is more suitable for me. Thank you in advance for any feedback!!
@JamesReader
@JamesReader Жыл бұрын
Hey Nico! In your shoes I would go for the R. I’ve compared the R for dynamic range etc against the R5 and R6 and in my opinion it keeps up so well that it’s not a concern. The EOS R has a tried and true sensor relied on by many pros in the industry. I would only recommend the R8 over it if you need good video quality. Other than that the R is excellent.

Hi James, always love your review as all very insightful. I am R6 shooter and mainly shoot as event photographer. I now own EF 85mm F1.4 + Sigma Art 35mm F1.4 + RF 50mm F1.8 + Tamron 70 200mm G2 F2.8. I am thinking to trade in my EF 85mm F1.4 + Sigma 35mm F1.4 into one lens, i.e. RF 24 70mm F2.8. Reason: to complement holy trinity as I already own 70 200mm and also I thought that 24 700mm is very versatile lens with fast apperture for low light. Pls note, in Jakarta used RF 24 70mm equals to two lenses I own (EF 85mm + Sigma 35mm).😊 Do you think one RF 24 700mm F.28 is worth trading in with two lenses: EF 85mm + Sigma 35mm? I think I am gonna loose the F1.4 aperture of my two lenses, tough, while will get a versatile focal length 24 70mm but slower aperture. Appreciate your feedbacks soon...!

Thank you! That’s a tough one. I think the 24-70 and 70-200 are perfect lenses for event photography. I suppose I would ask how often you are shooting in low light situations? I’d you are keeping the RF 50mm 1.8 then I suppose that’s a very versatile lens you could use if light conditions are poor. Overall I think the RF 24-70 is an excellent investment.

@@JamesReader Hi James, thanks for the insight. Yes, it is a tough one to loose 2 gorgeous lens into one RF 24-700mm. I mainly shoot at office's event and frequently encounter low light condition, also several times in tight space (a group photoshoot), hence wide angle zoom such as 24-70mm really comes in handy. Not to mention that I don't always have the luxury to zoom in/out by feet, as I am not always near the stage (have limitations to come near stage, if you know what I mean). Alternatively, I may opt third party 24-70mm lens, such as Tamron G2 or Sigma Art, however I may not get the image quality as good as the native lens. Await your views, pls.
