I am a young budget filmmaker/content creator. I know for a fact that digital creating is my passion and want to pursue it wholeheartedly. I am trying to find where I want to go with this passion to make a living while still enjoying it. I got my first camera, Canon T7i in 2021 and am still using that camera to this day. Great beginner camera, however, as I improve my creating, I am looking for a more capable camera that will provide high-quality videos and photos at a "budget" price. I was looking at the EOS R on the used market but there were just too many limitations that come along with it. I was so happy when Canon announced this camera cause it is literally the perfect upgrade for me. Just need to get a couple projects done for some companies/friends and then the R8 is mine!! Thanks, Manny, for the informative video.

As an RP user who recently got an R6, these features were everything I was looking for when I went to upgrade (minus the absence of IBIS). The RP had a HUGE buff with this one, I really thought there wouldn't be a refreshed and better version of a camera like this, full frame, uncropped 4K, CLog3 and 40 FPS that costs a lot less than the latest version of the R6 is crazy. Seriously if Canon just lifted the 3rd party lens ban they would sell so many more units of the latest RF low cost bodies to beginners which would most likely lead to return customers upgrading to something like an R6ii or an R5 or R5ii etc and eventually sporting all the Canon RF L lenses in the future. It really baffles me that Canon can't come to terms with this, it would probably make Canon the best in the business for all skill levels and niches. When anyone that's interested in starting a photography hobby I always steer them to Sony but if the lens issue wasn't a thing I'd absolutely steer them to Canon, just imagine how many more people are doing this, that's a lot of sales and potential loyal customers Canon is losing.

@chingymofo1 Жыл бұрын
I do have them, they do somewhat work but the problem I have is that it makes the kit heavier, every adapter I've used with both the RP and the R6 have issues quite often (trouble with connection fault which I have to turn the camera off and pop the battery out to "reset" it) which is very scary at a critical moments like in weddings etc, adapters also just don't sit right and always have a bit of wiggle and lastly the EF lenses are older now and there's no newer lenses coming out for a dead mount. Also if you're gonna say something about cheap adapters, I've used the Meike, Viltrox, JJC and of course, the Canon adapter, they all had the same issues with my RP and my new R6. It is do-able but it isn't very reliable in my experience. For any type of photography that doesn't rely on you getting critical non repeatable shots like landscape, street, portrait or car photography then really it's ok, but with events it's kinda scary when you have a malfunction in those moments. @@fredepstein

Thank you very much for this video and your explanations. As usual Canon loves to make cameras at unbeatable prices then after people are stuck with the camera and well they are forced to buy their lenses and there it hurts! Example : Canon R8 ($1500) with a RF 24-70 f2.8 lens ($2400), you are at more than $3900 !!! Sony A7 IV ($2500) with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2 ($900) and you are at $3400. With a better battery, higher resolution, two SD card slots etc... The day you want to change your camera, you will be forced to stay with Canon because you have their lenses and you are stuck! The stratagem is formidable. Imagine this R8 which is an excellent camera with the possibility to include Tamron or Sigma lenses, you will have the perfect combo to start with Full Frame !!!! However for me I will not switch to Canon until they open their mount to others. Peace D@vid

Though duel card slots is where the R8 fails imo, even Nikon put 2 card slots in their budget full frames. Honestly right now if you can deal with the worst AF of the Z5 it with the budget lenses is the best deal atm. And its not even like the Z5 has bad AF if you compare it to DSLRs from like 2016 lol

@RobDTom I guess it really comes down to what feature removals you would consider crippling the camera. For some users these changes may not be a big deal. I'll probably pick this camera up since I've been looking for a good entry point into the canon ecosystem but I know I will be buying lenses with image stabilization anyway so for me the lack of ibis isn't really crippling the camera in any way. I could certainly see where the lack of a second SD card slot would be an issue for a wedding photographer but for my amateur work it's a non issue. The small batter could become pretty annoying. Everything has a degree of compromise.

It’s interesting they consider this a replacement to the R but clearly used the body of the RP. It makes some sense though considering the body shares some similarities with the R62. I’m sure, as usual, there will be a lot of moaning and groaning about what Canon should or shouldn’t have done, but for the price point and the video features of this camera, it seems hella solid to me. Side note, I’ve been planning to make a video for a while on how camera manufacturers have really missed the boat on putting smartphone-esque computational AI in their cameras, it’s interesting to hear that Canon is moving in that direction, even if they’re hesitant to call it such. Anyway, great video my G.

From a spec standpoint, it is more closely an upgrade to the R/RP than the R6 (which has IBIS, dual card slots, etc) and is more a pro-sumer camera, versus more of an entry-level camera, which is what the R8 is intended to be (entry level FF with some features omitted like second card slot and IBIS, neither of which the RP/R have).

This body fits a very interesting spot. You better believe it's a cut down r62 because that's exactly what it is. No joystick, no ibis (ouch) a crappier battery, One less battery slot, and some omissions here and there. And it sucks how manufacturers are using the availability of a grip to separate the marketing further. Just pathetic. $1,000 less. There is a few gotchas. If you're coming from a R you're going to lose six megapixels. That's tough. Otherwise, this is a bullseye shot for someone wanting to upgrade it autofocus from the old R, genuine upgrade over the RP, and an upgrade for r10 users with a find out that their Rfs lenses are the trashiest in its class. Unless the users invest in adapted EF glass, they will have the option of buying very boring low end lenses or hyper-expensive L lenses. The icing on that crap cake is no third party lenses. It's like a trap door waiting for them lol. Canon marketing, you have earned your money. You guys are awesome and unfortunately the best and worst way possible.

Kinda, but I think this is geared more towards people just stepping into the R line. Although they consider it an R replacement, by some accord you can look at this as an RP Mark II, and consider that market. Is this going to produce less diffumination in the background? (based on your old video talking about "Why you shouldnt use electronic shutter for portraits").
@onlysublime Жыл бұрын
just so you understand, electronic shutter is when there is no physical shutter to actuate. A traditional mechanical shutter has a first mechanical curtain and a second mechanical curtain. As you take the photo, the first curtain will start to open and drop downward. The second curtain follows and drops downward. The shorter the shutter speed, the closer the second curtain follows the first curtain. Electronic first curtain shutter is where there is no first curtain dropping down but you still have a second physical curtain coming down. where I think electronic shutter mode matters most is color depth. At least on my R5 (I haven't tried the R8), if you put it in electronic shutter mode, you are shooting in 12bit color. If you shoot with mechanical shutter in H mode (6 fps or slower), you're shooting in 14 bit color. If you shoot with mechanical shutter in H+ mode (12 fps), you're shooting in 13-bit color. the other issue with electronic shutter is you can see banding in places that use lighting like fluorescent lighting. this can mean that if you shoot 5 pics in a row, one pic might be a little darker or brighter than the next pic as the camera can capture that flicker.

When you shoot subjects not a human being posing for a shot, like kids running around, sports, dogs chasing each other, IBIS is basically useless. You are going to use a shutter speed so fast that far exceeding any remote possibility of beneficial from IBIS. But AF and af tracking, depth of field, bokeh are still important. Canon R8 with RF100-400 will be far far superior and reliable in shooting fast moving subjects than equivalent Fuji system for the same total cost.

@@frankluo230 not at all - we’re talking 1-3 pictures more in focus out of 40 pictures with the canon R8 with the 100-400 compared to an XT5 with the 100-400 (which is basically a 150-600) not to talk about the 40 mp compares to 24 of the canon which essentially makes it able to crop and still retaining a sharper image. 24 mp for birds etc is really not useable in most scenarios and is a way bigger loss than having ibis (which you made it sound like it was a loss) lol Not only that, it has a mechanical shutter as well and yes, the ibis is useless (in most cases) when capturing stills in speed (which wasn’t what I was talking about) but in video or to capture movement, it’s the only way.
