In the last months I fell in love with Shure PG52. It's kinda poor man's Beta 52, but with the right placement it actually just needs a cut around 250 hz - and I like it better than the Beta 52. As you can guess, I prefer less pre-eqd mics.

A lot of people don't realize this, but speakers and microphones are basically the same things (they are both transducers). I made my own kick drum mic out of an old solid state combo amp that I no longer needed. Just ripped the amp out and wired the 8" speaker to an XLR cable. Augmented with a room mic it can give you all the thump you need on a recording. It's a lot easier to do if you have an amp that has a TRS connection to the speaker. You can just unplug the speaker from the amp, plug that into a direct box, and do your standard XLR from the box to your interface. Just put the speaker in front of the kick like any other mic and get to work!

Thanks, that was a useful rundown. I use the Beta52A for kick in. I mix it with the WA U47 FET Jr. for kick out. Not a very cheap mic, but still relatively affordable, and can do mono overheads or mono room too, plus bass cab, smooth vox. I like the bass response of the Audix D4 for floor tom, and do use the D2 for rack tom. But that SE V7X did maybe sound better than D2. The SE8s sounded really good. For cheaper SDCs, I do love the Line Audio CM4, at about 110 eur. For ribbons GAP R1s are nice. Like you, I like the Cranbourne Camden EC1 Mojo set to 'Thump' for kick.

My drums room is not that big, it’s a 10x10 storage room with sheets and blankets to help with the reverberations. Where would you recommend a placement of a room mic? My drums take up a 6’x5’ space.

Put them as far away from the drums a possible. Behind some gobos so they sound darker. Maybe even facing the wall so they pick up more reflections. Then compress the shit out of them and see if that helps your sound.
