The RE320 uses neodymium magnet unlike the RE20 which uses a ferrite magnet like the SM7. Neodymium magnets-based microphone tend to be brighter microphones. It was designed for a particular price point. It's a good mic, but other than sharing the Variable-D for controlling the proximity effect and the same outside shape and mic mount (and support for the Electro-Voice 309A Suspension Shock Mount), it doesn't really share much with the RE20. For some voices, I think the RE320 sounds better than the RE20. For my baritone voice, I prefer the RE20 over the RE320. On a side note, the RE27N/D is the RE20 reengineered with a neodymium magnet and a few other tweaks and it's brighter than the RE20 and the RE320, not to mentioned more expensive than either the RE20 and RE320.

I think that a big factor when it comes to speaking and preferring microphones is having a good reference. And the difference between the HD 600 and M50X is huge.
@AudioHaze2 жыл бұрын
That's true! I actually really like monitoring in the M30s because they're really not complimentary at all. If there's a fuzzy high end, its SO much worse in the M30s, and the result is I'm super aware of hisses and stuff like that in recordings, and therefore tend to catch them pretty well. Low end...thats a different story.

When you made the remark of the RE320 sounding like a RE20 , I pretty much did the same reaction, that Bandrew did and when I realized, I mirrored him, I sniggered. And then, this thought formed in my head. I was like: "Wow, he didn't even bother brushing over it!" This is something not many people dare to do anymore, even though it's our mistakes, that make us human. And I really appreciate your courage here to let it go and go on. And this Video is packed with information - from both of you, two of the KZbinrs, I watch the most. Damn.... props to you, again and again to be able to channel your thoughts like that. I don't know if I could stand up to someone like him, who used so many microphones, that probably nobody on earth can hope to match his knowledge. This is probably among my personal top 3 of your videos so far. Fun, creative topic! Was happy to see the KSM32 get some shine; it's a sleeper. Keeping with your theme - you touched on it but SDC mics typically used for instruments, drum overheads, etc. can also work well for interior dialog/voiceover, making them very versatile general-purpose mics in any locker. One possible caveat: some of these so-called "pencil" mics have lower sensitivity because they're designed to capture instruments at close proximity. For video production on a boom, where they might need to be a couple feet away, they could benefit from a gain booster (something like a Fethead Phantom) to increase sensitivity and keep preamp noise in check.

I’m late to this party, but I agree that the RE320 and the RE20 sound massively different. I bought and returned the 320 in very short order. In fairness, I didn’t try it on a kick drum which is where many say that’s is where it shines. A quick comment on the SM57. I was trying many different mics I own for different situations (singing voice, voice over, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, etc.) I have a Heil PR-31WB. It’s the smaller version of their PR-30. I acquired it for literally almost nothing (long story) and while many do not even rate these mics I found it sounding fantastic compared to many of the other mics I own and was convinced it was my “new” go to dynamic. Then I put my SM57 in front of my guitar cabinet. At that moment, I realize why the SM57 is the “go to” dynamic for versatility. It was hands down better at least in that application as well as many others. But, for my speaking voice I still prefer the Heil PR-31 WB. Just a mic for some to consider.

The Telefunken M80 would be on any list where a GREAT vocal (dynamic) mic is needed especially for live or spoken word. It literally makes anyone's voice sound better right out of the box. I have a few and love them for live vocal work. I also have a few SE V7's and will ALWAYS pick that over an SM58 or BETA58 given the choice. Love them on female voices especially. I use the RE320 with the kick drum setting processed through a dbx 286s for live spoken voice. I have RE18, RE20, and RE27N/D mics. I find the RE20 needs more EQ for my voice than the RE320. I believe it and the RE27N/D make good live voice mics for heavy low mid voices like mine. I also use an Earthworks Ethos mic for my live voice. I love it. I like it better than the Earthworks Icon USB which I also have for when I've gone minimalist minimalist with just a mic and a Windows 11 ARM processor notebook. I can't always completely control where I do live voice or the amount of baggage I get to take. Nice video. The RE20 and Ethos in this video sound really good on the voices for which they're used.

If you have a home studio, with no proper treatment, you need a dynamic mic. For that get a beyerdinamic 201. It is a fantastic mic, very flat, sounds great on voice and it can be used in any situation you would use a 57 because it can handle high sound pressure. It sounds amazing in wind instruments. I bought it for my sax and I regret not buying it before, I spend some money on cheap condensers, trying to avoid the awful sound I was getting from a 57 and other dinamics. the condensers sounded better, but the 201 goes very low and very high so it really sounds very detailed and REJECTS undesired noise and room reflections.

Hi I'm looking for a condenser microphone to record rap vocals in an untreated room. I have a nasal voice so I am looking for a microphone that attenuates it and doesn't take up much room but I don't know which one to take. I have a budget of $300.

Honestly a good old SM57 or some alternative like the Se V7 or SM58 will get you there just fine. You may need to EQ the peak on the SM57/58 from 5k-10k to be a bit flatter though. I would stay away from condensers until your rooms treated or at least not very reflective :)

re320 can be modded to sound more like re20, and it's not a super hard mod also.

What mic is Bandrew using in this video? His voice sounds fantastic... Wait... too funny... He just mentioned. That mic does sound great on his voice. LOL.

I just bought a hififman 560 V4. What would be a good gaming mic for it. Thank you

I think most dynamics would do the trick! My inclination is an RE20, but anything from an mv7, sm7, the earthworks range, they're all great! Neat King II is a great affordable condenser so spoken word as well, looks great on camera too

Your least confident choice was the AT2020 and not the mic you've never heard before? :P
