LOL ... yeah, I've been told that I'm a difficult customer before :) I guess I should have said that I want the most versatility in the smallest footprint, but only for the stuff that I regularly work on. So for me, I can't remember the last time I needed anything SAE, so that's just extra weight and space.

I waited MONTHS for the ICON set to come back in stock and when it finally did I was able to pick it up on sale and got it for like $30. I am not really happy with it because like you said no sockets. I was putting together a little tool bag to keep in the car and I ended up getting a small set of 3/8 socket set with a ratchet to complete my bag. Along with a air compressor, a small jump pack and some tire plug kits. It is a work in progress. LOL. Thanks for sharing all of these, i had no idea that there were so many different brands of these kits out there.
@kintsugimoto19 күн бұрын
Hahaha, SAME !!! I almost went to eBay to buy one because my local store was always out of stock. I'm curious to see what will be included when their bigger set gets introduced with the sockets. They make combination jump packs/air compressors now ... I'm getting one to test for the channel in a couple of days, so we'll see if it's worth adding to the "go bag" Thanks for watching and commenting !!!

A good comparo. Yeah, there will never be the “perfect kit”, yet the individual will buy the kit that fits their needs the best. I have the ICON set and for me it’s been the knees of the bee. Thanks for the heads-up about the ICON 2.0 version coming out. That gives me a plan. We can thank Craftsman for its flash clearance sale of the V-series and to leave us scratching our heads about the future improvements and availability of the V-series tools.
@kintsugimoto13 күн бұрын
Thank you !!! Yup, agreed ... there isn't a perfect setup, but the Icon is pretty close to perfect for me. I'm finding some 3D printed cases that might just work with the Icon bit set and then there's space to add about 8-10 sockets. Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on with Craftsman ... I'm starting to hoard the vintage stuff from garage sales and swap meets!!! lol

That craftsman V series set is designed to hold a Facom ratchet. Craftsman swapped in their 1/4 ratchet, thats why is has those plastic parts in there to make it fit.

I have that craftsman v-series kit in my personal vehicle. First week I had it, I used it to replace a headlamp bulb, it's a nice kit. I managed to tetris some power torque SAE chrome nano-sockets in there just incase. I agree it's... Odd that the ratchet and driver handle just sit loose in the case instead of being retained, but it's not a deal breaker, I'm pretty good at remembering to open the case right-side-up I also have that larger kobalt kit, I bought as a semi-disposable kit to leave in my work truck for the rare few occasions I need to use it. I had the same problem with the ratchet being ridiculously hard to remove from the case, I used a dremel to cut some finger grooves in it to deal with that. Overall I think it's a good value proposition even if it's not the greatest quality.

In the V-series. It doesn't lock. It's made by same company that makes icon. The loose plastic is a cheap spacer. Buy a 15mm and turn it upside down and put on the driver. Fits great. Also, I put the craftsman flex head in there instead. Also. This kit is very very similar to the new icon coming out

The best mini tool set is the one that I assembled: 1//4in compact flex-head ratchet, 4in extension (with magnet inside), 37 bits of assorted sizes (10 of them "impact rated"), 10 sockets (5-14mm) 2 bit holders, 1 small 1/4in extension, 10mm 1/4in flex-head socket. With sales, you can get the icon set, Hercules security but set, and both of the Hercules magnetic nutset sets for about $70. Thanks for suggesting the netsets ... I never thought to pair those instead of the 1/4 sockets. The only thing is the netset has a long neck, so not great for tight spaces. The 1/4 Pittsburg sockets were just $8 this weekend, but they were not impact rated like the Makita ones.

Just get the Wera! It will do a lot of tasks but won’t do them all. But for a general fix around the house and som bike repair and maintenance in general it’s pretty good. And you don’t need to swap around tools in different boxes and stuff. How much did you spend buying all of these tools compared to the cost of the Wera! And none of them are as good a quality as the Wera. The only thing worthy was the Icon and that ratchet thing that made a T handle. That looks so useful in a lot of situations.

For $5 HF had their ratcheting screw driver on sale which comes with a sleeve of metric and SAE sockets and during their Icon ratchet sale I got a 1/4 drive cyclops for $20 but there again a case for it all is difficult to come by but in my opinion the flex head and cyclops (if you watch Hand Tool Rescue he uses cyclops heads on a lot of his machinery disassembly and assembly very effectively) The Klein starter kit is also VERY nice with a beefier ratchet that is pass through sockets. None of the Craftsman sets really impress me and I understand backdrag is REALLY bad on a lot of the new V series, which is a shame as we have some 40 year old Craftsman V USA made ratchets that are uhhhmazing. You are very right in that the perfect set doesn't exist but the Icon is close.

I have several different versions of these small tool kits. My favorite wrench is the one from the Icon kit. As you said the Icon set needs a set of sockets to really complete it. I have a Gearwrench version that I like a lot- however the case is cheapo plastic and the lid opens at the worst times. I realize the Wera is stupid expensive but can be found on sale around $70 and really is the best set. You just can't find anything else with the same quality as the Wera in such a compact package. Wera is just too convenient to throw in a bag and have all the basics in one kit.

How could you not need sae if it’s for edc? So many items use sae at least 7/16”, 1/2” and 9/16” are the main 3 Iv seen on tons of random things Iv worked on like any house items appliances or random things as random as like an awnings if you needed to tweak one at a friends place or camper. Heck campers are full of sae and most fasteners used to build anything at all are sae i only see metric in cars, bikes and cheap furniture sets a lot of times the Allen key is metric. Yeah you might find some conversions like 11mm for 7/16” but maybe our life experiences are just different and you truly never fixed anything sae just all metric. Also when you say edc do you really man carrying one of these in your pocket? Nothing wrong with that I’m just curious. I keep tools in my vehicle and I’m usually never too far from my truck or house so never felt the need to carry anything more than maybe a multi tool so it seems kind of crazy to carry a little tool set everywhere you go. Hmmm, maybe I should have said Everyday Car for car and motorcycle mechanics :) I mostly DIY on classic cars and motorcycles, so I've never touched any of the SAE sockets from my mechanics set. I don't do a lot of DIY around the house, but when I do it seems like whatever socket or hit is in the kitchen junk drawer works..I was looking for something to keep in my backpack, which I use to carry my cameras and microphones to help make videos. Most of my cars and motorcycles have their own tool kits, and then I supplement them with additional tools and some common spare parts if I go on longer trips.
