The overland market has exploded over the last 10 years. People have gone from camping in tents near their vehicles....to sleeping in tear drop trailers & huge tent adventure trailers.
Basically...overlanding is making your vehicle a base camp with products "on top" or "surrounding" your vehicle.
With this explosion has come advancements in technology like solar power, on demand hot water, hi tech suspensions and elaborate tents and canopies. All these advancements have pushed the price of these tiny rugged trailers higher and higher.
Its now common to see basic trailers start at $20,000. Ad on beefed up frames, hi tech insulation and composite materials, dual pane windows, heating and cooling, etc...and now its common place to see trailers cost $30k , $40k $50k and up!!!
Yes they are cool. Yes they are built to last 5 lifetimes...but they are too EXPENSIVE!!!!
In comes a company called Hiker Trailer. They decided to keep the concept simple and inexpensive. Build a strong steel frame, strong suspension and a basic strong box to carry your gear and sleep in...all starting at only $3000.
Check them out at www.HikerTraile...
If I buy a trailer it might be a Hiker Trailer with my special request built in. Maybe I can build a MIXFLIP special edition model?

Nice to see someone building micro campers that don't cost more than the tow vehicle. Thank you for making a video about these guys, it is cool to see the half million dollar expedition trucks and it must be tempting to focus on the top of the line platforms and tech but so few people will ever have one.

One of the better priced trailers for the apparent quality of construction. I am/was a finish carpenter and have worked on boats and camper interiors as well. There probably isn't a great amount of profit in these for the company. Enough to get by but, I doubt they are hosing people at these prices. Built by your neighbour instead of in another country? Worth a few extra bucks in my opinion! As for one commenter asking about a $1000 single person trailer? What are we talking about for difference? A foot or two in width of materials cut out of the middle? You still have walls and suspension and frame parts and lights and efficiency of use of materials... I am sure it could be done but it wouldn't look this good!

As I get older, sleeping on the ground isn’t as much fun, but I still like to go camping. I’m starting to look at trailers as an option, but the prices are usually way too expensive and the features seem way too much. I saw your previous video when you rented a hiker trailer. These are more in my budget and it’s very simple yet versatile. Thanks for the info. I’d like to go to one of these expos to see for myself what interior feels like.

@@bigvin7602 I checked out the runaway trailers after your fiberglass comment. They look real interesting to me, especially with the no wood in it. I have a 2008 Tacoma 4x4 with a fiberglass slide in utility shell. It's actually set up to be camped in, but if I had one of these trailers, it would become my storage facility and the trailer would be my living area. I've been looking at all kinds of trailers and I'm struggling to get over the sticker shock from when I was looking at a couple of years ago. I just retired from trucking and I will be living in the US part-time and in the Philippines the rest of the time, so no fixed abode for me in the US anymore.

I always say...use the right tool for the job. If you are single and only camp with a dog and you want to go deep in the back country where travel trailers cannot go....then you need to figure out if these are for you? If you camp at the KOA with shore power and built in bathrooms then these are not for you. I love these trailers but I dont think I'll go this route when I build my overland setup to be honest. I need to stand straight up and I need a porta potty and I need a desk to work on my laptop. Basically....I need a tad bit more room like what a truck camper offers. But that's just me. Some people want way less.

I love the minimalism, and the price. I don't need seating, if I've got a tow vehicle. I can set up a tailgate kitchen on the tailgate of a truck. What's the point of spending $15,000.00 more, just to load down the tongue? I want as little hanging off the back as possible, and the storage space onboard just for the night. I'm basically going to crawl in, go to sleep, wake up and get out anyway. I don't need "Furniture grade cabinets" for that. If I can get that, just that, for 3 grand? (I'm not in the market, I have an Aeromate step van, but still.) The pass-through to the shelves is quite honestly brilliant. Why isn't that an Industry Standard?

These are the most reasonable priced ones that ive seen so far, i still wonder why no one is making traditional pop up style campers but more off road worthy. I am thinking of buying a cheap used one and just doing light mods to the suspension and frame so i can have a more off road worthy trailer and still be able to cook inside, hang out comfortably in case of bad weather and have more room for valuables and perishables inside....
@ambienteterrazas
@ambienteterrazas 5 жыл бұрын
@Don P You make a good point, but then again everyone has a different idea of what "serious off roading" is, some might consider it baja 1000 style and some others just driving down a light dirt road. I just like surfing and camping with my wife and friends and to get to some spots i requier 4x4, i am getting tired of sleeping in a tent and would like a little more comfort, here in baja ive seen guys with huge pick up trucks towing trailers with atv's getting to the same spots i do, i think i could handle well an 8ft pop up (i think those are the smaller ones) behind my xterra. But then again its just an idea you do make a good point, the longer the combo the harder to handle....

I've camped in a pop-up for 45 years. I've put them down in the rain too many times. You can only try to keep the bed dry when the wet canvas is folded onto it, but good luck. A pop-up has Everything is stored inside down lo under the seat. Lift the cushion, hold the lid, bending over next to the floor for everything. ax-food-kitchen stuff- hot dog sticks, matches, OFF. its just not handy to get at stuff. EVERYTHING! A pop-up would be improved if the curbside panel opened up from outside allowing access to the compartments from outside. Thats just what Hiker has done. Plus The best cooking experience is outside with a gas stove or dutch oven not inside a pop-up with a low counter. All day long. Not conenient. The outside galley and nice awning with the picnic table underneath is a better set up. A pop-up worked for my family of six. Now we are empty nesters and we ditched it for a Hiker.

Where’s that ‘under $3k he was talking about? These rolling cardboards boxes are way overpriced. At $13k, I’d want an engine and a steering wheel to be included. It’s funny that they only sell to cash buyers... once you roll off the lot, it’s your problem now. So it’s all profits for them since they don’t deal with collections or anything extra after you drive off with this gimmick. *For $13000, you might as well buy a nice low mileage used cargo van and convert it into a trailer. So you don’t have to tow it. I was laughing when he said the rooftop tent, wiring and screen door or door with a window are an extra charge. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bring a portable propane stove add at DC Refrigerator which would likely fit on bottom shelf or maybe they have one as an option that will slide out. You would have to have some type solar or electricity to run it. However if they install it then it cost more and they make decent DC Refrigerators with a compressor for 300 to 800 that are pretty good. I think the cheapest one is the Alpicool it is around 350 and holds maybe 20 liters it is small but it can easily run off of 100 Watts of Solar. Dometic, Whynter, Truck Fridge and Engel all make very reliable Refrigerator/Freezer that use very little power they are not large but most load like a cooler and are great for camping even people who live in Vans have them. I know some are as large as 50 to 60 Liters.

Maybe the 3K is older model? I bought a 2016 Winnebago Minnie for $12K on May 17 2020. Has everything I need. Including potty with shower. It's now October 2020 and I've taken her out on 17 hiking adventures. That's not a typo....seventeen weekends, due to COVID. Having a blast with my winnie. Even during a pop up t-storm we were snug as a bug in a rug watching movies inside my Winnie.

Listen id love to have one of these or any for that matter but lets be real this is one of the biggest shams going ok maybe not that bad but if you know how to do wood work basic carpentry design and metal work you can put together one of these for nothing there is nothing in that camper some doors and windows on a trailer - the electric is basic he avoided the battery question about how long it would last off grid, 2 hours max I bet , the one thing that's difficult is the suspension I think I don't know didley about suspensions ( now that I think about it I don't know didley about much of anything) its just the market is so over priced so many people want to get out there and they do it in old SUV's campers, well great vid take care!
@mixflip
@mixflip 5 жыл бұрын
It's actually not a scam at all. Price out the materials, wood, steel, windows, wheels, tires, axles, brackets, bolts, screws, industrial glue, wires, LEDs, switches, paint, paint brushes, screw drivers, drills, table saws, jig saws, welder, plasma cutter, angle grinder, clamps, work benches, wrenches, sockets, etc...how much is all that? Then ad up the man hours and double that if you are not Mr. Tool time Taylor....and I'm sure you can see how it's not a scam. I dont have time with 3 kids, nor the tools, nor the work space, nor the desire to do all the work....and even if I did do it.....I'm sure it wont come out have as pretty as their work which they have streamlined over a decade. Also if there was no market for these....they would have filed for bankruptcy....not expand to a shop in Ohio and Colorado. Who cares if I cant afford one. Someone out can....it doesn't matter what I think....or what you think. People want them. If Hiker doesn't sell them....someone else will.
@davidtrueslayor7474
@davidtrueslayor7474 5 жыл бұрын
@@mixflip Hold on industrial glue dude I forgot all about that, lol, you definitely make some good points and you are definitely on about always being someone out there who can and will buy them. One thing I didn't account for and you can tell me if you think this is a valid point, when I see these companies like forest river or Winnebago etc. selling a travel trailer that's much bigger with a lot of features, they are huge companies as where a lot of these other guys are smaller and starting out. That has to play into the pricing right ?
@mixflip
@mixflip 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidtrueslayor7474 lol I only mentioned the glue because some of these guys use automotive epoxy so strong that the wood will break before the bind does. I am sure it's more expensive and harder to find than Walmart glue. As for a 50 year old corporation with large bulk purchase orders on materials....I'm sure that plays a factor in pricing for sure. I will say....$20k for Rockwood travel trailer with a shower and a bathroom and sleeping for 4 is a fantastic deal....if you camp at a KOA campground. There is a market for rough and tumble rugged hard core off road campers that fit on technical narrow jeep trails where a 5th wheel cant go. That performance and durability cost money. That's just life in my opinion. I'm not ready to buy anything higher than $10k right now myself so I have my eyes on a few lower cost options. I'm not against anyone who spend $30k on a camper. Who am i to judge? I'm not paying the bill lol.
