Best bullets for hunting

Almost every bullet has a story from someone who hates it and a story from someone who loves it. If killing is the metric, they all work, just maybe in different ways. There is a place for all hunting bullets imo, except match and fmj bullets. Cup and core, bonded, monolithic, and various hybrids. Are you looking for the best penetration, the best accuracy and bc, the best expansion? Then find the bullet that fits that application. All the bullets you mentioned are good picks.

Oh dang I follow and I am subbed to hopefulballistics👍 I agree with his opinion, minus hammer rounds I have no idea. I reload these projectiles alot for my friends and relatives who swear by them for their Moose hunting👍👍

About 35 years ago I dropped my first deer and I did it with an old shot-out Savage rifle using a partition. And from there forward I have always used the partition. I feel lucky too. They have been quite accurate. Deer aren't hard animals to kill so I haven't gotten too creative with bonded or monolithic bullets. This year, I think I'm going to buy some Accubonds for my 270 and see how they shoot leading up to fall. Thanks for this great video. I really enjoyed it 👍

I have been using Partitions over 60 years and love them but I switched to accubonds for elk size game and when using any magnum calibers because of Partitons coming completely apart at hundred yards or less on elk! For deer Accubonds are not needed but are more accurate most of the time in the hundreds of guns I collect!

I have a 300 Savage, Model54 30-06, a custom 270 (Shilen match contoured barrel on a Model110 action) which is my light hunting rifle, a 223, a 22-250 custom varminter, and a 28 Nosler with a mod reamed barrel. this is my heavy 1000yd bench gun that weighs 23 pounds. That's all I have....

I love working up loads with Hammer Hunters. Fast, accurate, and relative ease working up a load. However, my main hunting is whitetails and the Nosler Accubonds are “the standard”. Before started to hand load in late eighties, I used factory loaded partitions for a number of years and were great. After I started hand loading, I shot many different bullets but mostly shoot Nosler AB’s. Not happy with their production of bullets for loaders but still am a Nosler man.

I used the 110 Grain Accubond in my 257 Weatherby and it was extremely impressive on a whitetail. Also one of my favorite is Federal Trophy Bonded Tip. I have them for a 280 REM and they are absolutely devistating. Excited to try the Terminal Ascent in a 270 Win when I get them. Also Federal factory ammo has been one of the most accurate factory offering I have used.

I've had really good luck with Barnes ttx tipped 150 gr in 300 black out and they expanded well no tracking needed just my experience with them my son uses them in his 308 same result

My favorite bullet is the Federal Terminal Ascent. I dont have to use a solid copper and prefer a cup and core but acknoledge the certain advantages that a solid copper bullet offers. The Terminal as ent combines the best of both designs. Next I really like the Nosler Accubond Bullet. The Partition/A frame are proven winners. Federal Fusion is another down right dandy bullet. I consider all those premium bullets. I use them but not regularly. My bread a bullet bullet is a Hornady inter Bond and a Speer Hot core. I have used these 10x plus and they have never been a issue. Sierra has always been a "accurate" bullet for me. Also always a bit fragile. Always loosing its core. But its seldom been a problem. I used the X bullet when it first came out a d with 3-4 animals found that the lack of shrapnil caused slower deaths. Animals shot with cup n core dies faster. I ttied Barnes a few times some dozen years later and saw the same things. Deep penetration but marked slower incapacitation. In other words longer tracking jobs. My experience is with deer and hogs and a few bears. A western hunter shooting at longer rangers might be different from mine or from a Alaskan hunter where critters are tougher and alot bigger.

i started reloading about 5 years ago when i started shooting higher power rifles. it was a way to save money at the range at first. it became a hunt for the perfect hunting bullet for each of my calibers. nosler accubond tops most of my ammo. what isnt topped with a nosler is crowned with Barnes. the only problem now is finding the nosler and barnes bullets to relaod with

@Derek McMurry there are several retailers in fairbanks ak that i check regularly and several online (midway, grafs, and even nosler itself). i can find what i need at times, but nosler accubond is difficult . i have been using more and more barnes, which works well, but I prefer nosler

I'd say the trophy bonded tip line of bullets, which includes the terminal accent, are the best mix of all. They expand at very low velocities, under 2000fbs, yet stay together very well at extremely high velocities.

Never been disappointed with Nozlers partitions . I use them in both my 270 Wby mag and 300 Wby Mag. My 300 I shoot the numbers out at 100 yards. No problem hitting the same holes. Just have to match the right amount of powder that matches your barrel

I've lost one deer in 40 years. I've used archery, rifle, muzzleloader, handgun, shotgun, and a Ford truck😁. The deer was in Colorado - mule deer, about 45-60 yards down the hill from me, quartering to me, shot him with a 140 Accubond from my 270 in an exact POI opposite a quartering away shot. He dropped. My brother heard the shot, took him about 5 minutes to get to me. We walked to the buck. At about 10 yards, he jumped and ran off w/o offering any shot it happened so quick. We tracked him through a valley and up the opposite ridge which ended up being about 3/4 of a mile. Never found him or any more blood despite another 3 hours of searching. I honestly believe had a taken any of my Barnes ammo and had the same scenario, I would have definitely had a pass through and the deer I've NEVER had a problem with Nosler BTs which is what I've used most - 270, 280, 30.06, 300 RUM, 7mmRemMag, 6.5-284 Norma, 308 Win, 6.5 PRC. I did have a buddy shoot a pronghorn in TX with his 308 and Hornady SSTs. He had to unload all 5 shots because they kept blowing up on impact of the scapula In my experience most animals tend to run a bit after hitting them with TTSX, TSX bullets but great blood trails and never far. Btips - DRT. I did kill 4 deer with my 6.5-284 Norma this past season with the 127 Barnes LRX and all DRT. All of the game I've taken with Berger VLD hunting bullets were either DRT or made it about 10-20 yards and the majority of those were the 150s from my 270 Win over H4831SC at 3000 fps. My longest shot/kill was right at 800 yards and the only reason that happened was it was my last day, private v public land access made it hard to get closer, and conditions were as perfect as you can imagine. Personally, I prefer every shot inside of reasonable archery range which, for me, is 40 yards or less I have killed black bears with Scirocco bullets (flawless performance) and 1 deer with Nosler E-tip

Fantastic video! I agree with your choices AND ethical distances. Deer are the only game animal I've harvested with more than one bullet type. Barnes monolithic bullets didn't do well for me...went right through and the animal ran forever. SST was the most lethal. Every animal I harvested dropped on the spot--heart and lungs were jelly. The only deer I ever had to shoot more than once was using Nosler Ballistic tipped bullets--wouldn't recommend.

Nosler bullets hard to beat in general from my experience, my favorite factory deer hunting ammo is still Winchester supreme controlled expansion silver ballistic tip ( they seem to drop deer size game quickly with little to no run away from 20-500 yards ) and for elk nosler accubond trophy grade is my new fav but still love partitions. Whoever said partitions aren’t accurate either had a bad batch or a pretty off rifle. Never handloaded a partition that wasn’t accurate for my 270 win, 25-06 or 30-06. Just shot a 1 1/8” group from 100 yards with a a funky swirling 20 mph down/across wind to get ready for a blackbuck antelope hunt going on.

I’ve been hunting for about 25 years now. I’ve used Sako factory 50gr sp for my .222, 100 gr Norma sp for my 243 and 150gr rn pmp for 270. It did good but 7 years ago I started shooting prs matches, reload 140gr eld-m for my 6.5 creed and ons of my friends invited me on a springbuck cull. All my ammo was finished and only had my match ammo for my 6.5 and thought, screw it I’m going to shoot head and neck shots and never looked back. Nothing and I mean nothing kills quicker than a proper shot placement. You’ve made good points about distance. I agree with you about get in closer to make an ethical shot

I would like to remind people that all modern bullets marketed for hunting will work for hunting. Inside 300 yard with 30-06 speed or less, cup and core will hold together. I have no problem with bonded bullets but only think they are absolutely necessary with fast magnums. Also heavy weight cup and core bullets tend to hold together better. I have shot elk with Hornady eldx 220gr. out of my .300 rum and I don't know if it held together but there was an exit wound. Hell I even think the hated Hornady sst is fine for most hunting. I do agree copper or bonded is better, but how dead is dead? Thanks for the videos.

Swift Scirocco’s are amazing. Definitely best bonded polymer tip bullets. Acubonds are very good though. And the A frame is way better then the partition.

Hunting fl. white tail don"t require deep penetration bullet to get a pass through. Cup & core work, bonded can pencil through. Shoot bullets that are designed for what u are shooting.

Ive developed alot of data and used the 180gr Partition with great confidence producing consistent overlapping shots out to 176yds, inside of a dime out to 255yds using my REM700 in 30'06 on a leadsled. When it comes to confidence, bullet construction and accuracy for moose hunting my standards are very high👍👍

I've already understood why you chose this round because I don't leave home without my box and 4.5-14×44 scope to go with it😁👍👍 I've never would've believed, overlapping groups out to 235yds is amazing I can't settle for anything less. Only thing, I'd rather not attempt such shots but get as close as I can possibly get headshots are easier from close ranges👍👍

Have you read the "223 on deer, elk, etc." thread on Rokslide? It's long but worth the time as it may change your opinion on cup and core and match bullets terminal performance. It did mine.

I have read a lot of that thread and with certain bullets the results are surprisingly good even on big stuff. There is a similar thread on the 260/6.5 Creed and again the results are pretty amazing. I had no issues taking out my 260 Rem or 6.5x55 for moose already but would have never considered the ELD-M and X for them. The results speak for themselves.

Used a Speer hotcor on an elk in 2007. Terrible. Zipped right through him. 200 yards with a 25-06. Every shot was a killer, but zipped right through, never dropped. Did not care for the Speer. Dropped an elk in 2012 with a Trophy Bonded Tip. 30-06, 75 yards. Really like the TBT. The Hornady Interlock is Muley medicine. I got them because they were cheap, but they shot great, and dumped Muleys. Then there’s Hornady’s V-Max. At 3600 FPS out of a 25-06, it will turn a jackrabbit inside out.

I bought the Speer hotcore to sight in my 257 Weatherby. It's really cheap ammo. I've always heard the interlock is an accurate bullet

Hammers have been accurate, but I’ve had some screwy results and I’m not as sold as I once was. Barnes gives accurate BCs and the expansion velocity issue is a but of a misconception that Barnes has done a piss poor job of combating. At least via their claims when you talk to them, each bullet in their lineup has different minimum expansion velocities due to differences in the nose/hp designs. Some have impressively low minimum expansion velocities, while others are about where the consensus of 1800 minimum, but 2000 for buffer. The 139 gr .284 LRX has a minimum expansion of 1400 fps, while the 168 gr TTSX is at 1500 fps. Bost are the best in those calibers when balancing velocity, bc, and SD needed for monolithic bullets. You can reach out a long way with a plain 308 and keep that 168 above 1700 fps and even further with a 7-08 and that 139 to 1600 fps.

Excuse me while I scoot down to Gunnies for some of those $18 Partitions... Well put. I cringe whenever someone uses the ELD-X as an example of a hunting bullet. It's a target bullet with a thick jacket as far as I am concerned. When I was in my early teens and still hunting deer with my dad and brother we got very tired of Core-Lokt blowing into a thousand pieces in anything but soft tissue on Blacktail. My dad suggested that we switch to the Partitions which were offered by Federal back in the day, even for my 7x57. They are not perfect, but a marked improvement. My last deer was shot at about 30 yds with a 308W with a 180 grain Nosler in one of those Federal factory loads. Nothing to complain about. If I ever go meat hunting again I'd consider a copper bullet from Nosler or Barnes. I'm partial to Nosler since they are fairly local.

I won't use the SST because it is designed to expand the fastest in the Hornady line. Supposedly, explodes on impact to damage the internals. I want a pass through and Sierra Tipped Game for deer. I am going to try a Barnes in the Fall.

I have been taking deer with the SST Superformance 140gr 270 ammo for going on 15 years. Dozen deer down and all passthrough shots. From 150-320 yards all went down and stayed down.

I have used 270 Superformance 140gr SST's for going on dozen or so deer. I am not sure how much they "shred" because I have no bullets recovered, what with exit wounds and such.

Horrible experience with Hammers. The few I used basically blew out, in closer ranges. I much prefer Barnes as far as Monos go. Never going to use Hammers again, after such abysmal performance. Accubond is probably my “no brainer” choice. It just works, all the time. BTs are a hit and miss for me. I had similar experience with them as with Hornady’s SSTs. Too much meat loss after “grenading” at shorter distances.

BEST is always ones OPINION. just as BEST caliber is ones opinion. BEST bullet according to Experts is one that dumps ALL its energy in the target. BEST bullet depnds on to many factors. you can shoot the so called best bullet at target at 50 yds and the bullet could fail that close where it could be amazing at 400 yds and vise versa could be terrible at 400 yds but amazing at 50 yds. Long story short THERE IS NO BEST BULLET OR CALIBER......
