Great video. I especially like your comments on BC. I shoot a 160 Partition in my 7MM Rem Mag at 2965 and get 5/8” groups at 100 yards. My friends think I’m weird for not picking a higher BC bullet. My response is when the partition stops killing critters, I’ll stop using it!

Sectional density only matters when it’s applied to bullets that stay together . That sectional density disappears when the bullets blow apart on impact . I’ve seen many people arguing that their Berger bullet has higher sectional density than a partition . Sure ..until it hits hide and bone . Great video as usual Randy ! Thanks

I use 100gr Barnes TTSX in the 257Wby running 3540fps and have had no issues with deer or elk as long as I have a good shoulder shot. The 250gr Accubond also worked well to 200yds in the 9.3x62 on elk. Absolutely kills like lightning out to 200yds(so far), I had a complete pass thru on an elk just behind the shoulder at 200yds. Watching your videos has shown me that 'hunting' is more sporting and enjoyable than all this 'long range' hunting that is ruining the sport! Thanks for your insight and experience Randy.

I second the accubond! Damn fine bullet! I use the 180gr and the 200gr in my 338 Win. Shoot amazing and are absolute killers. ~3,000-3,100fps The scirocco I had accuracy issues with.. More so I couldn’t come up with a load that shot expectable. Hopefully I’ll get it figured out soon. I love that “idea” of using it lol

I live and hunt in north central BC. That means moose, mule deer, black bear, mountain sheep, caribou, mountain goats and in recent years, more and more elk that are moving into the area. My go to rifle is my bolt action .270 but depending on circumstances I also use my .243 and my .300 Win Mag. At my local gun range an old timer gave me some reloading advice for hunting. He told me to use Nosler Partitions, 100 gr. for the .243, 150 gr, for the .270 and 180 gr. for the .300. He also advised not trying to attain the highest possible velocities but rather work up an accurate load at less than maximum loads. "It's bullet placement, not energy that quickly kills game." That was almost 40 years ago and I've yet to see the need to try anything different for hunting loads. Like many others, I also enjoy target shooting and my local club now has a range that goes out to 1000 metres. I'm happy to try all the latest and greatest long range target bullets, powder of the month, and "target primers" but that's a very different thing from hunting.

Randy, your videos are the reason I picked up a 7mm STW. It carries huge energy at 500-700 yards and that’s as far out as I want to be when taking an Elk. That 7mm will hammer and make a clean kill with a heavy bullet. I’m learning to load off the information you have shared and thank you sir. Hello Mr and Mrs Selby. I just wanted to say that I love Randy's videos. He's a wealth of knowledge. I've been a handloader now for 15 years and I've learned more over the past year of watching Randy's videos than I did in the past 14 years. I also wanted to say I love your gunsmithing videos. It's always been a passion of mine, any work I can reasonably do on my own firearms I do. I think it's so cool how many rifles you've built over the amount of years you've been doing it! It's something I'd love to learn. You truly do build some beautiful hunting rifles. And I also want to say as a hunter I appreciate your views on long range hunting. I've been hunting for about 17 years now and have shot a lot of whitetail and mule deer, and the furthest shot I've ever made was 250 yards. I totally agree with you that shooting animals at long ranges isn't ethical and I don't believe it's truly hunting. Like you said in one of your videos, slipping up on an animal in the timber and shooting it at a reasonable distance is hunting. I simply refuse to shoot at game at any distance over 500 yards, even if I could hit my paper target consistently at 1000 yards. Respect for the creature demands such self limitation. I shoot the 7mm 175 gr Nosler Partition for almost 50 years and can only confirm your experience. My experience with Barnes X bullets goes back only 20 years but they are also a great bullet, considering the longer bearing surface, which allows to step down a few grains and make them relatively fast, even in standard rounds. A little bit of experience with the 150 gr cal. 30 Grand Slam was also very positive in my 30-06 Blaser K77. The 175 gr GK from Sierra is the only projectile I had some negative experiences in 7 x 64, a relatively slow round, 2600 ft/sec. In both instances the bullet was deflected by ribs of medium size wild boars. Since then, Sierras are used by myself only as paper punchers, since they are very accurate bullets.

If we could all hunt out west we would because we truly love hunting however because of our geographical locations some of us are restricted to shorter shots and because of that we've chosen smaller cartridges for our rifles . I agree with everything you said Randy. My 70 years hunting big game in the PNW backs up all of it. I use my .300 Win. Mag. with Nosler Partitions when I'm hunting big or potentially hazardous and use my LR Accubonds for deer at distance and year round use. They have never failed to perform when I needed them to. This ultra long range shooting of our game animals is being promoted by so-called "influencers" a modern and worthless phenomena whos only purpose is to make money, not good decisions.

I've tried most other brands and styles over the years and have found nothing that is better and most aren't even close. I really enjoy listening to someone that knows what they are talking about. Totally agree using the Partitions in a wide variety of calibers and zero complaints. I've probably used 10 or 12 different brands but Nolsers is my go to for everything especially if there 400lbs and up. Whitetail are easy so Bergers kill like lightning on them and coyote. As everyone bullets are like trucks some die hard Ford's Chevys etc that's what makes life great.

What caliber are they and at what velocity are you shooting those bullets at? What has performance been like on game? I only ask because I have found those mono bullets to be very sensitive to velocity and shot placement. If you don’t have the minimum velocity and/or the bullet doesn’t hit something substantial enough, they tend to pencil through and not open up. I only have experience with hammer bullets and am not sure about others like Barnes. Not saying they are bad bullets at all but I think some people aren’t aware of what they require to perform. But maybe my experience was a fluke. I’ve shot 3 deer with them but that hardly counts as a large sample size. I’m interested to hear your experience. Thanks!

In my opinion as long as you use a bonded soft point that’s accurate enough for your typical distance then you shouldn’t have a problem. As far as factory ammo goes anything nosler or swift works well. Federal fusion and terminal ascent are also great for the price. That’s just my opinion, though.

I have been reloading since 1985, always sticking to the Reloading Manuel's. With a single stage press, which takes time and patience for each stage of the reloading process. There is a good reason why a couple series of bullets have been around forever and will be around forever, despite maybe being expensive or less than popular. Swift A frame and scirocco II, nosler partitions, spear hot core and grand slam and their once trophybonded bear claws ,barnes triple shock . Sierra game kings . All require understanding of their design purpose ,but do what they do amazingly well for their intended purposes /ranges. Many of the soft tipped bullets have two niche situations in mind. Small cartridges with low velocity like 7.62x39,.300 blk, .338 spectre, 6.8 spc,6.5 Grendel, and other intermediate cartridges OR extreme long range hunting of 600 yards + . B.c. does take consideration for extended distances because a high b.c. bullet retains inertia better which translates to more energy on target. However if it's not balanced with high sectional density bullet weight and bullet construction for the job at hand , it's cruel to use for anything but paper Targets or plinking. As he says , it's a merchandising trick to rely on that one measurement alone. A 0.500 g1 b.c. is enough to reach 1000 yards. B.c. changes with velocity. Sectional density does not... mass/weight and construction doesn't either. So learn to identify your needs and let them be met by all considerations of the bullet.

I've never had a bullet failure hunting big game using the nosler partition bullets, and I have used them for 48 years. I even bagged a big 9 point whitetail with my handloaded 257 Weatherby 100 grain partition and ìt dropped like a sack of taters from the shock of lightning 🌩

Couple of tears ago found a KZbinr by the name of Ranch Fairy (Troy Fowler) and he also talks about broad head construction. Yay. First comment. Big fan of yours Mr Selby. Shot this year's deer with a 180 Nosler E-tip. Because I can't afford the other monolithic bullets. Don't know if it expanded, but punched two nice holes and the deer ran 6 inches. For health reasons, I think I'll stick with the e-tip for a while.

I haven’t looked lately to see what the availability is but I had to settle for what I could get when buying ammo. Which sucks because I have about 10 different types and brands of ammo…….

In listening to the videos of cartridges, calibers, firearms, placement, and everything else, what is to me some pretty substantial rules, 4) The firearm is pretty much a matter of taste. Single shot, bolt, sem. Brand, options ect. 3) The caliber is pretty much a matter of taste A) The above-mentioned could very well be governed by governmental rules, availability, or cost 2) Placement, I am learning quite a bit about where and were not to shoot my game animal. I feel this is where some studying should be done. B) shoulder, neck, frontal, quartering, walking away from you, being in a stand, ect. 1) Type of bullet , this is definitely one of the top contributing factors needing investigated before going on a hunt. C) while as mentioned in A, this could be controlled by cost and availability, or law, if at all possible a investigation of " bullets " for target/ match, long range, short range, trajectory, ect. It is important to know that long range bullets do not necessarily work well for short range, or short range bullets for long ranges. In personal experience and reading stories or watching videos of the one that "got away" , with excellent calibers, or seeing and reading the "found bullets " stories. It might be beneficial to make a " Use this bullet " for Long range, for short range, do not use for hunting list. Even as Realgunsmith is speaking about the long range accubond and the short range accubond, I didn't know there was a short and a long range accubond. I'm going to up my studying the correct bullets so if I am needing ammo and I'm in a store or even area that is short on caliber, brand, and bullet choices, or I'm watching cash flow, I can still make a wise choice.

I have use grand slams too in my 25-06. The 120gn grand slam 25 cal bullets. Used Hornady interlock in my 30-30, also used Speer bullets in 30-30. For flat point bullets in 30-30 I prefer Hornady 170gn Interlock or cast.

Higher BC out at your long range shooting (5/6/700 yards your words) retains more energy than a lower BC bullet of the same weight at the same distance. All else equal, a bullet with a higher BC will put more energy on target than a lower BC bullet. Given two bullets of the same weight, shot at the same MUZZLE velocity, the higher BC bullet retains more velocity and energy down range. The extent of how much a BC will change depends on each unique bullet shape, aka design (higher BC). It's physics Randy...

The comments about velocity of the bullet at impact are very important. All bullets are designed to give their best performance within a particular velocity range. E.g. a bullet that mushrooms at 7x57 velocities would probably explode at 7mm Rem Mag velocities.

When I was a kid we switched from Core-Lokt to Partition as we were having a lot of meat get ruined by the Core-Lokt coming apart on blacktail deer at the close ranges we hunt them at. I've never recovered a Partition and the amount of ruined blood-shot meat went down considerably. A copper bullet like the E-tip would have been even better I think.

Very true for heavier animals. i.e. "game" animals. I like your no-nonsense presentations, keep on going. In Australia the only animals that require heavily constructed bullets are buffalo, scrub bulls, Sambar, possibly wild horses and big mud encrusted boars. The rest of shooting in Aust. is on thin skinned animals where expansion needs to happen with 4-5 inches of penetration. Over-penetration in loacations with higher people density is a safety hazard.

I have NEVER been disappointed with any Barnes bullet. I’ve never recovered one. The closest was one petal in the hide from a quartering to me shot. Thought he was broadside. I’ve also never had an issue with the Sierra Game Kings also. Oddly enough, they seem to shoot to the same point of impact with the same loads.

I have only recovered two after 50+ animals with them. One was a miracle basically. I found it laying on the ground some distance after it passed through a fall turkey in TX. The other one went from the neck to just under the skin on the hind quarter of a 220# whitetail.

I wonder if the 175 grain Speer Grand Slam bullets is too tough for Whitetails or Mule Deer out of a 7x57 Mauser at a little over 2500 FPS. Out to 300 yards will it expand enough or just punch through. It has a sectional density of .310. At 300 yards it will still be moving at over 2000 fps with about 1650 ft pounds remaining energy. I don't shoot an anything much past 300 yards.

​@@WayStedYouThanks. I just got a wild hare and bought those heavy bullets because they were available at a really good price. Also bought the 160 grain weights in the Grand Slam too. Also have some of the old 160 grain Speer flat point hot core. I think they called Mag tip. Plenty of 139/140 grain psp on hand. The gentleman I got my 9.3x62 Mauser from has hunted in Africa all his life and thinks the 175 grain bullet in the 7x57 is the greatest thing since sliced bread for African plains game up to 300 yards.

Randy, I am in the south. Here, a lot of guys got on the magnum bandwagon for no reason whatsoever. 99% of their shots are under 100 yards. I have tried to explain until I was blue in the face as to why they kept inexplicably losing deer with their various thin jacket bullets. To them, their bullets are going "too fast to expand" or are they are missing. You instantly become the stupid idiot when you try to tell them their bullets are exploding on impact and simply wounding the deer. I came to my knowledge of this due to my own bad experience. About 16 years ago I had a 139gr Hornady SST blow up on my biggest buck at the time. I was shooting a 280 Rem. The deer was maybe 40 yards away. Hornaday advertised a muzzle velocity of 3100 fps for those loads and they couldn't handle the impact. That experience sent me on a massive research project. I settled on Barnes and never looked back. They have been flawless from point blank to 250 yds on 50ish deer. Had my gun shot the partitions well, I have no doubt I would have been pleased with those as well.

I have watched many (if not all) of The Real Gunsmith's videos, and often give him a "Thumbs UP" but I do not recall him ever mentioning the "Hawk Bullets" (Salem, N.J.) or the "Trophy Bonded Bear Claw" bullets invented by Jack Carter. Or the four varieties of "A-Square' bullets invented by Lt. Col. Art Alphin. Those 3 brands of bullets have killed (very dead) many game animals. They don't fragment as the n o s l e r bullets do. {Sadly, the A-Square company is kaput / out-of-business.}

Partitions aren't always accurate out of a specific rifle but if your rifle does shoot them accurately there is no reason to use something else

Bergers have been phenomenal for me just sometimes picky on seating and powder load. Once you find the sweet spot they are excellent. Plenty of real world experience on game you can find on these style bullets

What I think I hear you saying is that there aren’t really many (any?) “bad” bullets, only bullets used at improper velocities and/or on improper targets. I don’t agree on disparaging BC entirely. It’s certainly overblown, but higher BC means more velocity and more energy down range, two things you promote.

Many high BC bullets have thin jackets & are poor game bullets. What needs done is to shot at ranges and know your drops as the BC is only a number and is constantly changing. Thanks for watching.

All true, but all else being equal, wouldn’t you choose the higher BC bullet? I think a good example is an LRX vs. TTSX. Both perform very similarly, but I’m choosing the LRX if I can help it for its better velocity and energy retention.

Energy is just a number. If you have 2k lb ft of energy and shoot through your game how much energy was transferred? How many deer have been dropped with a neck shot from a 22 lr? Caliber and bullet selection depend on the ability and willingness to take a less than perfect shot at game, which is why there are people shooting 300 mags at the same whitetails others are dropping with 223’s

@@jerryhorton2899 60% on average will be transferred when you have pass through. There is a formula and you have to calculate your environmental conditions, weight, diameter, construction. The 60% is based on the velocity of the bullet at impact on target, not muzzle velocity and 12-14” of penetration as well. A lot of variables come into play.

I’m going to Africa with my 7 mag this fall. Curious to see ho it does on plains game. I’m shootings core locket 150 grains. I feel the 7 mag is way to po for my Pennsylvania deer or bear.

Congrats! When I went to Namibia all game taken where in the 50 to 100 yard range. Alot of stalking... including Black,and Blue wildebeest. Impala, warthog, All taken with 270 win. I took nice Berchells and Mountain Zebras, Red Hartebeast and Springbok also. (I took these with a 375 HH model 70) IMHO your 7mm 150gn will be better than adequate for all African plains game .

I've experienced large entrance wounds with Hornady 450 bushmaster ftx bullets. Shots were under 100 yards. Small exit hole and little blood on the ground. Whitetail deer was the game. Give me a Hornady interlock. I'm not impressed with Hornadys ftx. BC 😂😂😂 agreed

Factory ammo is not taylored to the accuracy level of the likes of each rifle as handloads are. My shop is, first and foremost, an accuracy shop and I speak of what I use, not what I don't use. Thanks for watching.

HORNADY WHITETAIL I'd the ONLY bullet I've used ON ANYTHING since 1990 & before that was Remington CORE LOKT & Have NEVER had the First problem HOWEVER.... I don't hunt MOOSE, GRIZZLY, or ELK but ANYTHING ELSE Here in the EAST COAST MOUNTAINS I ALWAYS drop my game or the WHITETAIL doesn't go farther than 50 yards

Energy is over rated. Its bullet placement and construction. If it cuts vitals it will kill. Just like an arrow. Theres handguns that kill all sorts of game that dont make min recommended energy levels yet cause all sorts of damage. The whitetails ive shot with 6mm remington didnt die any slower or different than the deer ive shot with 35 whelen, 300 wsm, and 376 steyr.

Me personally don't like that, match bullets are used for hunting. I know some people use them but I will never use a match bullet for hunting game, just my humble opinion.

You say BC is of no consequence and make it seem that BC only affects bullet drop, then say people ignore energy. I wonder if you took 2 7 mm bullets of the same weight and launched them at the same velocity , one having a BC of oh say 50 higher than the other, how much the energy difference would be from let’s say 200 to 500 yards?im not suggesting you should use a target bullet on game. In my opinion that depends on what you’re looking for in a bullet. But I can assure you BC affects much more than a few inches of drop

No thanks! I do not like frangible bullets. Frangible is great for hand grenades, but not for game animals. In the 1800's people killed game animals with lead bullets very successfully. But,,,,, it seems all game animals since the 1960's have been taking "steroids" and only Weatherby MAGNUMS and frangible bullets can bring down a four-legged critter. 🙄🙃🤕
