Awesome video! helped me gain some clarity. But maybe I can ask for some advice still from you? It's a long one...but detailed...I'd really love some help 🙂🙂🙂 I've been using 1 G7x Mark 1 & 3 SJ4000 action cams for about 2 years now The canon does great in low light, however, the battery life and recording limit is horrible and I need something with longer record time because I can't interrupt my drumming to change batteries/start another recording and it doesn't start another video file after another (though I'm told some DSLRs and point & shoots Do start another file after 4GB--which I'm fine with) Reason for my purchase: 1 of my SJcams broke a few weeks ago. At first, I thought I should just get another action camera, then I thought maybe a point & shoot, then DSLR, now camcorder...basically, I have no idea lol If I find something that meets all my needs, I would probably end up getting 1 or 2 more of those cameras in the future to match the quality, BUT I don't really want another G7x Mark 1 OR 2 because it only shoots videos up to 16 mins in 1080p60fps and 30 mins in lower resolutions.....I need a lot longer video recording than that. One stipulation is that my studio is virtually pitch black when I record. Aside from the 2 Neewer 176 LED lights I use pointed on me and my drums. There is no other light source in my studio (ceiling lights are turned off) ^^^ I've researched and learned that action cams don't do well in low light and adding more light can even make a bad camera better and is probably my best option, but I also wanna keep that "infinite black background" look. So I may be getting 2 more of those Neewer lights and have 1 on each corner of my drum rug, but not if that will take away the black background look. What do you recommend? Action camera? DSLR? Point & shoot? Camcorder? BIG NOTE: This camera is strictly for video recording! Since I already have a g7x, I can get great pictures and I don't need something for that. I don't plan on selling my g7x because I probably won't get much for it in 2018. --------------------------------------------------- MY STUDIO: 1. Black background all around my walls. 2. No ceiling lights on. 3. 2 Neewer 176 LED lights on myself and my drums at roughly 15-25% brightness (basically pitch black) 4. Drums --- so there are reflective surfaces in terms of lighting. I DON'T NEED: 1. Great Audio quality --- I get that edited 2. Stabilization --- they'll be mounted on either a tripod or a boom mic stand. 3. 4k --- I think 1080p60fps is enough for me to get a cool slo-mo effect (I could be wrong tho) I DO NEED: 1. Price --- $300-$500 USD (Since I may need to get 2 or even 3 more of whatever camera I choose) 2. Video Quality --- GREAT video quality in super low light with a pretty good Color Profile (Little to no Grain/Noise) 3. Record Time --- NEEDS to be able to shoot video for 30+ minutes ^^^Bonus if it can record while charging. 4. Settings --- Adjustable settings (WB, ISO, Exposure, etc) 5. Ease of Use -- Easy to use & easy to get my footage off the camera --- I prefer just plugging my SD cards straight into my laptop the "old-fashioned" way. 6. Auto-Focus --- I'd like to have continuous auto-focus for that price range (Drumming means my arms are flailing around) ***#2, 3 & 4 are must-haves. SOME OPTIONS: Action cams --> DSLR/Point & shoot --> Camcorder 1. Yi Lite --- Should be coming in the mail tomorrow 2. Yi-4k --- Should be coming in the mail tomorrow 3. SJ7 Star --- haven't ordered. 4. Canon EOS M50 5. Canon EOS Rebel T4i / T5i / T6 6. Canon EOS Rebel SL2 7. Panasonic Lumix LX10 8. Panasonic Lumix G7 4k 9. Panasonic G85 (I'm told this has no video recording limit) 10. Panasonic GX85 (I'm told this records multiple files once it hits 4GB - which I'm ok with) 11. Sony Handycam CX405 12. Canon Vixia HF R72 Camcorder (But there are many more that I have to research on) Is the SL2 the camera for me? Or the G7? Or G85/GX85? Or a camcorder? Or even just an action camera? 🤔 I'd really appreciate some help with this. I'm not a photographer/videographer by any means.. This stuff is confusing lol Thank you in advance.

I absolutely agree with "the camera you already own." But I would add a category to your list - action cameras, especially GoPro 9 Black, and DJI Osmo. Their tiny size and light weight have caused them to be used by LOTS of KZbinrs.

I have always found shooting with various types of cameras, in my case a DSLR, a camcorder, a waterproof action cam and a run cam to give the best flexibility in a shoot. It does however add a lot of complexity for lighting as all of these require different levels and styles of lighting.

Yep, there is no 'perfect' camera for all scenarios, depending on the shoot I'll try to cover all bases with a range of cameras too. The exciting part is you can still get great results across the board with the cameras available these days 😀

I've been using my mirrorless camera for most of my video shoots (I also use an action cam and a couple of smartphones). The only thing I don't like about using the mirrorless is that it will occasionally go in and out of focus while I'm shooting. Is there a way to set it so that it doesn't do this, yet will automatically readjust the focus when panning onto a different subject? I'm using a Samsung NX-3000 btw.
@PrimalVideo7 жыл бұрын
You should be able to select manual mode for the focus on your camera or change the autofocus settings so it doesn't check the focus as often..

Great explanation of the gamut of camera options! I have a few questions: 1) You talked about the audio synch issue with a webcam and also using something like a Zoom recorder externally. Is this "variable" issue, only something to be concerned about for webcam based recordings? 2) You didn't mention action cameras like GoPro. Do they have a place for talking head video on KZbin, or better to just keep for action usage? 3) At what level (price; perhaps you name a few brands) DSLR can you get more than a half-hour recording length. Unfortunately, my Nikon D7100 is limited to 20 or 30 min, depending on quality setting. Thanks in advance for taking time to answer :) ... Gord
@PrimalVideo7 жыл бұрын
Hey Gord! Thanks for the ongoing support 😀 To quickly answer your questions.. 1) Yes this is typically only where a variable frame rate is used which in a lot of cases is the default for webcam recording - can also be an issue with smartphones using variable frame rates (or non-standard frame rates) too. 2) Was trying to keep the length down on this one and look at the most obvious / best options (in my opinion anyway) and the video was still ~20mins! Gopro's can be good.. again.. use what you have and are comfortable using.. BUT personally i think the super wide / fish-eye look isnt great for 'talking head' videos and even setting the cameras to a less-wide setting the picture quality then isn't great and the video motion can be stuttery.. so really comes down to the type of videos you're creating too i suppose 😀 If you need super wide angle then they're an awesome option. 3) My personal preference for DSLR / Mirrorless cameras as mentioned is the GH4/5 because of the no recording limit, no overheating issues and great battery life.
@GordIsman7 жыл бұрын
Thank-you Justin. I'm thinking that my next camera might just be a Panasonic. I wish I was able to get 60fbs @1080p out of my Nikon, but I can only get 30fps @1080p. That said, I'm just sitting in front of the camera for my KZbin vids so, it's no biggie for now. Cheers!
@JkDubbed6 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I needed to know! I need a camera that has no limit. As much as I love my g7x mk1..it stops recording after like 8-10 mins. Are there any point and shoots with no recording limit? Or, yano, something that isn't $1,000 lol Maybe $300, $500 max?

HI Justin, following watching the above i bought a Panasonic HC-V770. I enjoyed using it, all essentials (for me) was the ability to use external mic and listen at the same time. I've found a limitation (for me) when operating as I find the screen to small and a lot of the time the app doesn't work on my android phone. I have issues with my eyesight I'm afraid so i think a bigger screen for settings / monitoring would help. I'm now thinking of going for a samsung note 8 or 9 or an iphone 8 plus or the new iphone out next month. I was also thinking of getting moment lenses and an ipad pro as a stationary second camera. I have an mackbook pro 13" 2017. the notes are good as they have a 3mm jack for lavalier mics. I intend doing vlogs plus stationary interviews. Another reason i'm switching is that I recently bought a zhiyun crane m and the camcorder doesn't naturally balance. what do you think? maybe do a video for me!!! cheers alan

I watched the "How to Film Yourself with a DSLR Camera!" and downloaded panasonic's app, really bad feedback. I've tried it with own mic, rode video micro and iRig lav. Tried searching the forums but with no success! Any ideas? Maybe it's because I'm using a smartphone? I've switched off wifi, mobile data etc... alan

Thanks! $ is a big difference. The stabilization is definitely a key feature with the GH5 and also the better slow-motion options and 4k 60fps support. I'm confused, you say that the battery life on your camera lasts all day, but then say the battery life on dslr's and mirrorless cameras aren't that good. Am I hearing you correctly? thanks.

Use what you have, upgrade when you can or need too. I think you'd be surprised how many people (and some huge channels on youtube) just use webcams like the logitech c920 for ALL of their videos 😀

Video feels a little bit too long and cut yourself off at the end. That said, it was quite informative and useful. However the typical KZbin viewer might get bored before the end because of the length of the video and the video mostly being you talking to the camera. Some visual examples of footage would have made this a lot more interesting. Just some feedback and thanks for making it in the first place.

Thanks for the feedback Mr Nive! It's always a trade off of short length vs more information.. not too many complaints about the longer videos and our % watched on videos is actually higher 🤣
