BEST Camper Conversion Bed :
When I made my first van tour video, my number one question was "how did you make your sliding bed", so in this video I decided to take the entire camper conversion bed apart and walk you through the process of putting it back together. This bed is in my opinion the most logical conversion setup possible for the small space of a standard camper conversion. This is not a stand up van.
first you need to build a box with 2x4s as a base for the seat and the sliding conversion bed platform.
The next step is to attach a drawer slide to the base. I used a 500 pound capacity drawer slide. You can find this drawer slide on my website ( stealthdweller.com )
Next you need to attach the other end of the drawer slide to a small piece of wood. Then drill plywood to the top of that piece of wood and make sure that it can slide freely.
The final step is to attach a second sheet of plywood to the first one using a piano hinge. this part will cover the hidden storage space located beneath the seat when the camper conversion bed is in couch mode.
This is by far the best bed setup that I could come up with for my camper conversion. I hope that you can find some inspiration in this camper conversion bed build! Thank you for watching!

One of the things I like about this design is that when you are putting your bed back into couch mode, the big space opens up underneath to jam in all your bed pillows, duvet, sheets, whatever. Nice!

I teach engineering and really appreciate how you have incorporated the natural "elastic" deflection of the drawer slides to allow the bed to open without the legs contacting the floor and then provide support under load. Very few bed designs take advantage of material properties in this way... GREAT JOB! A+

Just one recommendation: drill some holes in your bed boards for air circulation or the condensation from your body through the mattress will eventually cause the wood to get mouldy. Cheers Mate!

THIS DESIGN IS FUNCTIONAL. Yes you have a good set up. Not hard to get to the storage underneath, no messing around with lifting or refitting 3 foam cushions or any one of 4 timber bed top pieces every time you want to access under storage like I have to. I had been thinking about what to do to get easy access and storage and still have an out of the way fold out bed. You have helped me solve my problem which will allow me to do away with a single bed/seat, gain storage and a comfortable seat using my newly bought foam and still have a bed when required. I have removed the table (used to make a big bed and one side of the U shaped cafe seating which previously gave me the option of two single beds because I wanted floor space. There is still too much seating for me as I am a solo traveler driving a little motor home (fits in a standard size parking bay) with an over cab double bed. At the moment I have L shaped seating across the back and down the other side. Under the back seat area in one corner is the water pump, the rest is storage to where the two seats meet on the other side over the gas box (accessed from outside. Next to the gas box is storage and three batteries and associated electrics to the stove cupboard. I have planty of over head storage. I can now remove the seating along the side and install a cupboard with doors, making access to the batteries easier and giving me a bench top (with a pull out table) the same height as the stove and a bit of floor space too.. When i was a kid, my dad took 2 twin bed frames and hinged them together in an old delivery truck turned camper. He created a "futon" back in the '60s. Wow he was so smart and way ahead of his time!!

I've been impressed with the super clever design ideas you have. That sunken shower was another extremely clever idea! GREAT idea to use the drawer slides! I've seen people do the same thing with alternating slats too for a more low tech approach, but I really like the slides for their smoothness of function.

What about using a hole saw to drill holes in the plywood to let a bit of air flow and avoid moisture under the cushions? Also, there is this aire-flow or den-dry net to put under the cushions or mattress to avoid moisture too. Depending on where you camp or store your van, that might become handy. Humidity sucks 🤣 Add an open containers with cedar chips in the compartment under the plywood. Smells pretty good

This build is the one, I do have a Question, the floating leg for extra support doesn’t touch the ground correct, which allows you to slide the bed without scratching the floor? If it doesn’t touch the ground how does it support the sleepers weight?

@DualEx I know you sold the van already but after watching numerous van build videos I see one concern about the bed is mold issue on the mattress. I believe slats are used for the platform to allow circulation onto the mattress to avoid moisture from sweat on the mattress which will later cause mold. I LOVE this build tho. Still watching some of your other videos to catch up as a new subscriber. Thanks for sharing.
