Do you know how the Japanese make insanely genius furniture because of their small tatami apartments? I feel like America is going through that right now too, with all the tiny homes and van conversions. Today I saw a folding loft bed that was using cabinets as stairs and had a small office under the bed.

@@francesnance9110 with all the stuff mounted/placed on the floor, I doubt it. Sure there will be some weight on top but not enough of a difference between top and bottom to be considered "top heavy". If a bed can outweigh several gallons of water + batteries + appliances then that ain't a bed lol. Also you can just lower it in use-position while driving.

Interesting. I have a concept in my mind a bit like a roller garage door, a slatted bed base board and attached compressible mattress that rolls up, into a roll near the roof at the back doors (slats joined with strong webbing bands). When deployed side guide rails on the van walls each side guide it as it unrolls down to sort of the normal rear bed position, like they do on the garage doors. As an engineer the holy trinity of vans bed-toilet-shower in smallest space are a fascinating challenge, everything else can work round those.

@susie98939 ай бұрын
@@nsmith3128 pretty much. Washing (body wipes, pressurised pump spray bottles, bathing natural water sources - anything to save on water usage; you can keep clean without actually having a shower). Many will have a shower every other day at a gym (some will even check in to a caravan park once a week to shower and do laundry); but if you're off grid that's not an option - and if you're off grid where do you fill up your water? And carrying a whole heap takes up a heap of space plus it's very heavy - so that's extra in mileage). Don't forget all the other things you need to use water for other than drinking and showering - there's laundry and cleaning.... When you take all that into account you begin to see why including a shower in your rig becomes impractical

The double bed slide out in the kitchen area option 10 is enough. The back section can be shower toilet, storage, a single spare sleeping spot or storage for a tent for guests etc etc. I love the vibe, aesthetics, decor of this van most of all. The clock Lol, just love it.

I got a 2020 Transit Medium roof in May. I'm going to build my bed in a DIAGONAL across the back. I'll be able to open the back door and step up into a triangular "mud room" with a pull-out toilet underneath. There will be triangular spaces at the head and foot of the bed, and I'll be able to sleep full length, without sleeping diagonal in a cross-bed. I already have swivel seats at the front, so I'll have a large space for the kitchen/dining area. I plan on using unistrut so I can dismantle, or even re-arrange if I want/ need to. BTW...this is my 12th van since 1973, after I came back from Europe where I saw VW vans all over the place.

If I could somehow design a van with a drop down bed in the front of the van over the front seats where the seats could spin around 180 degrees and the bed come down from the ceiling that would be cool. Put the bed away all day when not in use and be perfectly comfortable sitting in the front seats while driving or spun around while parked. The fixed bed for me just takes up so much space for something you only use when you are unconscious. For simplicity however, and ease of use I gotta say that side murphy bed is awesome as well without as many moving pieces. I would probably go this route if I were to build a van.

murphy wins. Single pivot with positive latch is bomber. as a mechanical engineer, you typically want to choose the most robust solution unless the client has specified something else. If I were to upgrade, perhaps do a slam latch, or get cute with making the Murphy wall functional for daytime. Linear systems suck unless you overdesign which means $$$ and space to house components. A parallel four bar would be my suggestion if the client wanted a bed to hug the ceiling during the day, a solution used in motor homes from days gone by.

I’m making a transverse bed lift where the frame rides on rails and expands or collapses across the width of the van while hugging one wall as it is lowered or raised. A repurposed bench cushion fills in the foot of the bed on the opposite wall after the bed has been lowered. I’ve spent a fair amount of time on the structural engineering details and it’s not at all straightforward. This bed is for a Sprinter 144 to make better use of living space. I’ve only seen one other transverse lifting bed and that one had deep fixed cushions to fill in the gaps on both sides which significantly cuts into the living space below. Not ideal. I think there are some pretty good reasons why we don’t see bed lifts like the one I have in mind but that also makes it an interesting design challenge so we’ll see how it goes.

i prefer the electric bed lift but... this one doesn't have windows .... i prefer the electric bed lift with side windows, for viewing when I want to sit and relax and gaze outside without going outside.

Wish the gal with the murphy bed would have turned it slower. I have it on 1/5 speed and still it goes so fast i cant hardly tell HOW it works.
