Do you know how the Japanese make insanely genius furniture because of their small tatami apartments? I feel like America is going through that right now too, with all the tiny homes and van conversions. Today I saw a folding loft bed that was using cabinets as stairs and had a small office under the bed.

Avoid the Van Conversion Guide.. it's not very expensive, but they also sell two different electrical guides... meaning this conversion guide likely has no information on electrical stuff, which would be the whole reason for my considering to buy the book. I tried reaching out about this... crickets..

A hydraulic drop from the ceiling style bed is my favorite way of ensuring a bed is always ready and gives you seating underneath during the day which then gives space for a bathroom and kitchen.

@yukirevive2722

@@francesnance9110 with all the stuff mounted/placed on the floor, I doubt it. Sure there will be some weight on top but not enough of a difference between top and bottom to be considered "top heavy". If a bed can outweigh several gallons of water + batteries + appliances then that ain't a bed lol. Also you can just lower it in use-position while driving.

Interesting. I have a concept in my mind a bit like a roller garage door, a slatted bed base board and attached compressible mattress that rolls up, into a roll near the roof at the back doors (slats joined with strong webbing bands). When deployed side guide rails on the van walls each side guide it as it unrolls down to sort of the normal rear bed position, like they do on the garage doors. As an engineer the holy trinity of vans bed-toilet-shower in smallest space are a fascinating challenge, everything else can work round those.

Most full time vanlifers will tell you they never use their shower and end up converting the space to something else (it's all very well to have a shower but to have to access and carry around the water needed to run it....)

@@susie9893I've heard someone say that. Are they just not taking showers for days? Is it hard to keep water levels full? What's the deal
@susie9893
@susie9893 9 ай бұрын
@@nsmith3128 pretty much. Washing (body wipes, pressurised pump spray bottles, bathing natural water sources - anything to save on water usage; you can keep clean without actually having a shower). Many will have a shower every other day at a gym (some will even check in to a caravan park once a week to shower and do laundry); but if you're off grid that's not an option - and if you're off grid where do you fill up your water? And carrying a whole heap takes up a heap of space plus it's very heavy - so that's extra in mileage). Don't forget all the other things you need to use water for other than drinking and showering - there's laundry and cleaning.... When you take all that into account you begin to see why including a shower in your rig becomes impractical

In my bus I plan on having a fixed bed in the back and then mattress can lift up like a lid for the clothing storage(and I can have my water tank down there too cause the amount of clothes I have would fill about 1/3 of the space) I’ve never liked the idea of convertible furniture cause for me, it sounds like too much of a hassle to, for example, make the bed into a dining area, when i can just sit on the bed with a lap table. I’d rather sit on my bed than a chair and table.

So many great ideas.. i love 10 the Triple Bed the most i think, though.... i do also love the lift bed and the van that the bed melts into the sidewall. i like multifunction, day time is this - and night time converts to this rather than being a standard fixed design., And even though it's just for me........ The double bed slide out in the kitchen area option 10 is enough. The back section can be shower toilet, storage, a single spare sleeping spot or storage for a tent for guests etc etc. I love the vibe, aesthetics, decor of this van most of all. The clock Lol, just love it.

I got a 2020 Transit Medium roof in May. I'm going to build my bed in a DIAGONAL across the back. I'll be able to open the back door and step up into a triangular "mud room" with a pull-out toilet underneath. There will be triangular spaces at the head and foot of the bed, and I'll be able to sleep full length, without sleeping diagonal in a cross-bed. I already have swivel seats at the front, so I'll have a large space for the kitchen/dining area. I plan on using unistrut so I can dismantle, or even re-arrange if I want/ need to. BTW...this is my 12th van since 1973, after I came back from Europe where I saw VW vans all over the place.

I have a beautiful print cover over my bed, so it looks great all the time. I could roll up my mattress and strap it and snap the bench seats into place, pull out the hidden table if I need it, all in ~5 mins. But I don't need it because I have a fold away hidden table and a swivel chair in my galley, where I can eat inside by a window. Or, I can sit outside in a fold-up chair to eat, or use the picnic table. ALL NO- WORK OPTIONS! LOVE IT!

I like it when a bed design includes provision for bedding and pillows which some if these are great at, but some are not. Having to store and set up bedding every time is a pain. I think it's what makes the humble rock and roll so good, there's a natural spot behind the backrest to roll up and store this stuff.

These work great when you’re young. We each need to get up 3-4 times a night and without waking the other. My wife is also not going to climb up into a bed. I’m thinking 2 singles in either a twin Murphy bunk bed arrangement or L shape with mine up high across the back. Climbing is not a problem for me. I would have given the electronic, drop down bed number one but she didn’t show how it looked when fully up against the ceiling. Can’t tell if there’s enough head room during the day. If I could somehow design a van with a drop down bed in the front of the van over the front seats where the seats could spin around 180 degrees and the bed come down from the ceiling that would be cool. Put the bed away all day when not in use and be perfectly comfortable sitting in the front seats while driving or spun around while parked. The fixed bed for me just takes up so much space for something you only use when you are unconscious. For simplicity however, and ease of use I gotta say that side murphy bed is awesome as well without as many moving pieces. I would probably go this route if I were to build a van.

murphy wins. Single pivot with positive latch is bomber. as a mechanical engineer, you typically want to choose the most robust solution unless the client has specified something else. If I were to upgrade, perhaps do a slam latch, or get cute with making the Murphy wall functional for daytime. Linear systems suck unless you overdesign which means $$$ and space to house components. A parallel four bar would be my suggestion if the client wanted a bed to hug the ceiling during the day, a solution used in motor homes from days gone by.

I’m making a transverse bed lift where the frame rides on rails and expands or collapses across the width of the van while hugging one wall as it is lowered or raised. A repurposed bench cushion fills in the foot of the bed on the opposite wall after the bed has been lowered. I’ve spent a fair amount of time on the structural engineering details and it’s not at all straightforward. This bed is for a Sprinter 144 to make better use of living space. I’ve only seen one other transverse lifting bed and that one had deep fixed cushions to fill in the gaps on both sides which significantly cuts into the living space below. Not ideal. I think there are some pretty good reasons why we don’t see bed lifts like the one I have in mind but that also makes it an interesting design challenge so we’ll see how it goes.

The half flip up bed is my favorite one, it just seems so easy and not many steps! I kinda wish I could live the van lifestyle, but I can't drive and vans are expensive.

How come I have a full size ProMaster yet my twin size bed seems to take up most of the room? Everybody else's vans look bigger. Is it a fisheye lens or something?

R&R is best. You can buy a R&R bed system for £200 and about the same for cushions, make it as wide and long as you want. Held in with 6 bolts, you get a proper sofa and you can even get them with seat belts. Going from sofa to bed 1 second, from bed to sofa 5 seconds and you can store bedding behind the sofa.

My bed solution is not here...full width/140 with an extension of 60 cm. 2 mattresses with a length of 2 meters, where I cut the mattresses at 140. The foam rubber, not the cover. This means that the 60 cm part will be back to the rear doors. From "daybed" to bed: pull out the bed, then pull out the mattresses...done.

Truck manufacturers put a closable upper bunk in lots and lots of highway trucks... I don't understand why van builders don't ever buy one for the shelf and mechanism... There has to be some wrecker somewhere lol
