Signal Hill has long been a guilty pleasure of mine. I love the simple straight-forward corn sweetness of the 40% version, and the extra mouthfeel of non-chill-filtering. The OP version amps up the flavour considerably. It is too hot for me to comfortably sip neat, and strangely does not respond well to water. So I have mine with an ice cube (gasp!). My research (limited as it is) suggests that Signal Hill is 95% corn, 5% barley, and sourced from Alberta. 🇨🇦
@briansimpson431010 күн бұрын
...and the price for both versions is OK, even by Ontario standards. Good value.
@WhiskyNeighbour10 күн бұрын
@briansimpson4310 agreed at the value. I could agree with that % of Corn/ Barley, too. A solid dram, cheers!

@WhiskyNeighbour For perspective, my favourite whiskies are strong smoky Islay scotches, so the Signal Hill is quite a contrast and a nice break for my palette. My current desert island whisky is Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength (any batch).
@WhiskyNeighbour10 күн бұрын
@briansimpson4310 That would be a contrast! Love Laphroaig, but it is so different then this sweet fudge in a glass!

The non chill filtered through me off too, especially on the 40% core. Definitely agree with the dessert like character sir and the Founders just has the volume cranked up. JP is a distant friend of mine, used to mix Deluxe back in my youth which had created a bit of a stigma towards them. I will try to keep an eye out for the more craft releases. Happy Canadian Whisky Week Jon! Cheers.

@SeawayWhiskyWire lol. This 23 year is a far, far cryfrom the regular JP. I almost can't finish a pour of the regular, while this is amazing! The Founders OP is good too, but just too sweet and not enough backbone to handle it. More oak, or char or spice might help balance. Cheers!

I am finding the best Canadian whisky is sold in the USA. While in Kentucky looking at bourbon I always look at the Canadian whisky section hoping to find a dusty Lot 40 cask strength 12yr. I found the Crown Royal hand select that also won a Canadian whisky award for best single barrel. It is delicious and it is literally a hidden gem. The 23 yr Wiser's that you love is available exclusively in certain states in the USA as a 24 AND 27 yr. I found the 24 yr but I haven't opened it yet(dry January). I just checked the Ohio website for liquor sales and starting January 29 Ohio is exclusively selling a dozen different Crown Royal single barrels. From your livestream with Sons of Vancouver they said their Realms of Rye #2 is available at Sealbachs and it is! Americans tell me that Canadians keep most of the good stuff in Canada but I am finding more and more good stuff is exclusive to the USA.
@WhiskyNeighbour10 күн бұрын
That is an impressive list and I would add all the "Found North" releases. Everyone tells me how good those are, and yet they do not sell them here! Which of the winners from this year's line up have you had?

@@WhiskyNeighbourFound north is fantastic. Batch 10 and Hover Hawk are both amazing. Their private barrel selections for season 4. The US oak is the best. Very similar to batch 10

Thinking about Canadian whisky, perhaps the smoothness and sweetness is what goes with the cold weather better vs a bourbon say that has a more sharp, stingy and abrasive taste that perhaps might be better suited for a warm US area. Likewise, perhaps scotch and Irish whisky go better with bleak, gray coolish temps of England and Ireland. Just a theory I gleaned from my friend who drank hoppy bears in the winter and normal beer in the summer as it goes down easier. Plus you had said that you prefer wine influenced scotches during a certain period of the year.

Interesting. I definately believe climate affects what we enjoy. I love a dark peated Scotch in winter. Helps me feel like I'm warming up by the fire! Cheers!

Alongside JP Wisers 42 year-old, this Hill OP at 60$CAD is also my Can-sk(e)y of the Year 2024 ! . . . i think the Malted barley does it ! --------------------- wait until you get a load of Canadian CLub 18 at 58% (90 pops in Ontario ) ! !

Another great Canadian whisky is Gretzky’s oat whisky at around 63.2 per cent alcohol for $99. This could have been a whisky of the year as well. This stacks up as one of my personal best whiskies. Gretzky whiskey usually smells good but the taste is lacking. This one has both smell and taste going for it and high proof.

@@WhiskyNeighbourI am so glad Macaloneys is getting the recognition. Their products are fabulous, and Graeme deserves it. He's poured his heart and soul into that venture. Sons of Van made a pretty good showing as well! There are a few of the Signal Hill OP left in Ontario, but none nearby. I might pick up the regular release, as it is around at the moment at a very reasonable price. I have yet to try any of their whiskys. We walked past the Distillery several times when we were in St John's Newfoundland, but it was off hours and they were closed, sadly. Next trip for sure... Great to see you post this review right on the back of the awards, so we can get a sense of it. You're also obviously feeling much better. Good! Cheers J 🥃🥃 Marian 🇨🇦
