Just got a bottle of bulleit any tips on how to get used to a higher rye bourbon

Picked up the 2023 (unpeated malt matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in a Single Vintage Colheita Tawny Port Cask) and 2024 (matured in Virgin Oak Cask and finished in Caribbean Rum Cask) Christmas Editions at Paul John in Goa!

I am a SoV fan for sure, gotta support the local businesses and they make a good product. But how do you think they get that lovely rich colour with new oak aging?

I think Weller SR is good. It's delicate and approachable. It does grow on it's fans. There is a grape note in the finish

The Convalmore was a Diageo Special Release in 2013 and I am now on my second bottle: I took what was left of my first with me when I did the Dufftown Distilleries Walk for the second time and we finished it as a group outside the distillery itself - happy memories...

The one on the right looked like a worm was part of the pout😂

Knob Creek 9yr is what I'd bring to a party. It's affordable and readily available here. BT Is scarce, and when it is around, it's as much as Knob 9! Now, if there was a true bourbon enjoyer there, I'd have something like OF Statesman, WJ Decadence or Old Elk Wheated in the truck.

Yep…all good choices. Maybe Woodford Reserve as well. Each one is usually around in poor ole Ontario LCBO. Like that you avoided Jack Daniels and lower proof Wild Turkey. Your choices are good mixers and sippers.

A store near me currently has the 43% Glenfiddich 18 for $109 USD. Given that bargain price point ($15 - $30 less than other places I have seen it) and some good reviews, I am picking one up for Christmas Eve for my guests who may like something a little less intense than my usual fare, but is still something nice enough for me to enjoy, too. I've collected a few other 18's, my favorites being anCnoc, Balblair, Deanston & Speyburn. All are a bit pricey, but all are worth it, as far as my enjoyment is concerned. Really great stuff. A very decent 18 that is relatively inexpensive ($100) and has a 47.2% ABV is Glen Moray 18. It is more subtle than the others I mention, but be patient with it, give it some time in the glass, and it is a tasty, enjoyable dram. As for Auchentoshan, not a fan of the distillery, in general. Seems more like an light Irish whisky to me. Cheers!

Love the mixing part! I myself need to try more wheaters, the soft and sweet nature I think would give me what I’m looking for away from the complexities and divisive nature of some scotch. Merry Christmas Jon! 🎄

Costco is the third largest retailer...in the world. It's no wonder they can bring such low retail on their whiskys. I'd really like to try that 21, play around with water to open it up. Thanks for sharing a home blend experiment ... the more I get into whisk[e]y, the more I love playing around with home blends. Sounds like if you gave that particular blend a bit of time to rest in a sample bottle or other vessel, you'd have a winner. :) Cheers!

Thanks for the review Jon. I’m glad you enjoyed the GF 21. I really like it I have been thinking about the Kirkland 17 but I didn’t really like the 19 that much so it’s good to know. As for that store that I thought still had some they didn’t so I looked around and found two bottles, but I think they may only have a couple bottles left, but you have to find what store they’re at and it was $169 which compared to the regular 21 at about 250 is a-steal Cheers oh and by the way, have you seen the Kirkland blend for lunar new year? I think it’s the heaviest bottle I’ve ever picked up. It’s quite pretty would make a nice gift.

Let your blend sit for a few months and try it again. Every time I blend something I let it sit for at least four months. It’s surprising how much it changes and gets better. 🥃🥃🥃
