First time using the G7th Art capo this morning after 25 years of using the Shubb capo on my 6th String Takamine. Well I was impressed. In terms of how well it works as a capo the G7th is no different than the Shubb - it’s does the job well. Where the G7th Art capo shines is it’s one handed operation without constant adjustment. Playing at church switching capo positions fast between songs works really well. I’m glad I bought the G7th Art capo now.

I've been playing guitar since 1968 and own 70+ stringed fretted instruments.I put my capos on from the top.Who wants to fumble/drop a capo onstage?.I don't like the big unwieldy spring capos.They don't store in case compartments well,resemble tools of the trade for the Spanish Inquisition,and press down hard causing tuning issues.I've recently acquired 2 partial capos.One simulates dropped D(leaving string 6 to ring),the other being a 3 central strings 'cut' capo.Me and Shubb capos go back a very long way on six-string,twelve-string,banjo(I dislike their 5th-string product)and dobro.My conventional Shubb(now with the more modern wheel clamp)and G7 are more or less interchangeable...UP TO A CERTAIN FRET POINT!!.The G7 has no inclination to flip off mid-song up where the neck gets thicker.The only Shubb 5-string guitar capo simulating dropped D comes with the older style of capped screw--and SHARES THAT PROBLEM WITH ITS 6-STRING SIBLING.I intend to buy the G7.Don't know if the wheel mechanism Shubb 'cut' capo will behave in the same way where the neck thickens up.Re strings I used to sell by mail every variety known to man.I have used for a long time now round-cored(tighten up to pitch before snipping off excess)Thomastik Spectrum Bronze SB111 on my 6-strings.Their products for other stringed fretted instruments I personally find weird gauge-wise.D'Addario Phosphor Bronze will suffice for everything else.Ok not the obliging company they once were(they'd make the guy in the street custom-gauged strings) but D'Addario invented Phosphor Bronze (thicker)wrap wire encasing thinner core wire(producing greater ductility)making them different to the competition.

Thanks for the info Nic. I agree that the Shubb and G7 are interchangeable. I actually think now I've had the G7 a while that I'm happier with the Shubb.... there you go. Always good to try things though! Thanks for watching. All the best Simon

Should've made it clearer Simon.I like the G7 but find their less expensive Newport better.Some makes now manufacture a Paige(among others)cradle-style capo(perhaps a larger company has bought the patent?).I thought the Paige was good if costly years ago but now be prepared to add £90 onto what you'd pay for the standard competition we've discussed.Maybe the standard G7 is mentally harder re figuring out how it can possibly function as well as it does?.😛.

Hate spring capos, springs are too strong and they dont compensate as you go up the neck where the thickness changes - the worst ones are Dunlop and Kyser. Garbage, bad design, always have to retune. Best buy for me was an Alice, cost 2.50 from China. Better than any, and I've used many over the 45 years I've been playing.

Pretty amazing that most capo reviews don't address the main issue on capos besides just keeping it in tune up the neck. And that's where to put it when your not using it. Do you park it in your ear. Do you stand up and shove it in your pocket? Co you put it in your shirt pocket when you have a shirt without a pocket? And so on. I think the G7 can be parked on the nut or the headstock without readjustment although you'd never know that by this review. I don't use the clunky Shubb because this is a two handed affair and and can easily fall on the floor just taking it off. By the time I get this in position and latch it in, the audience has gone home. The Keyser style capos do a reasonable job (especially the new lower tension one and it can spring on to the headstock. But wow, what a high profile that can easily get in the way of certain hand positions. But it's what I'm using now. I'll consider the new G7 art 3 if I'm sure it will be the last one. I certainly don't need another to add to my seldom used collection.
@SimonMorelguitar
@SimonMorelguitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Gene, yeah I know a lot of people put the clip styles on the headstock. I've never ever done that. I've always just gone the pocket when gigging, I've never found it a problem. Or music stand if it's that kind of gig. Thanks for watching, sorry I didn't consider that. Like I said, it's nothing I've ever done.

Hey there, thanks for watching! I take your point, but if you squeeze too hard you will put the guitar out of tune. Putting the g7 on and then having to retune anyway kind of negates the point of the expensive capo right? Shubb is still the best for me. All the best Simon

Hi I brought a G7 as it looked cool being able to put it on quickly and it does work well. One word of caution however after 12 months of playing it on my Martin D18 it has marked the neck on the back. Obviously could be me putting it on wrongly I guess, but I've just brought another Shubb and will be using that from now on.

Hey there, this is interesting. Sorry to hear it's marked the guitar. Did you leave it on over an extended period? I don't think it is because you put it on incorrectly. Either way, I think the shubb's better value and works just as well. Thanks for watching the video. All the best, Simon

@@SimonMorelguitar hi no I take it off each time as I'm very careful with my guitar. It was my 40th birthday present after wanting one for years. To be fair its only a very small scratch and doesn't alter the guitar in any way. However thats not the point, over time I think it certainly would. The mark is just around from the strings so almost on the top. The capo doesn't offer much cushion in the corners I've noticed. Thankfully I've spotted it and my Shubb is coming soon. Thanks for all your support, you are doing a great job 👍

Hi Good Video !! :) Well, recently purchased the Shubb Deluxe S1..Annnd i don't like it... I find that it is a good design idea ...but it is not a precise design... as it is built unevenly where as the clamp design is off center of the guitar neck when clamped.. and the top part that sits on the frets falls off square to.the fretboard which caused the bass side strings to shift and go sharp when capo is clamped. Also it seems the shubb company could have made the top metal and rubber part a little longer so as not need to say on packaging....."Fits Most Guitars"... I don't intend to go through all the bother of returning it to Amazon... I am.gonna try and re-shape it so that is clamps down square to the neck and strings... the way it should have been before it left the Shubb Bench. P.S. Glad you had success using your Shubb Capo ! :)

@SimonMorelguitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, thanks for the note. I have never had a problem with the Shubb, so I'm sorry you have been frustrated by it. I don't quite understand what you mean by 'clamps design is off centre'. Did you try having the capo clamp less hard? I think after trying the G7 for a year or so now, that I actually prefer the shubb because I can permanently set it exactly how firm it needs to be, while the G7 you need to get used to how hard you need to push it. Wha guitar are you using it on?
