My ping is alive and catching gnats as we speak (end of feb in Ontario) and mine has been in sphagnum since the day the nursery sent it to me.. and I keep it damp all the time.. sooo I am doing the exact opposite of your suggestions. I must have a super ping 😉💚🌿💪

It's rarely black and white with carnivorous plants. I'm so happy your ping is doing great! I will caution you however. I started my ping collection with 3 plants. I kept them all in a tray of water all the time. They all grew great for about 6 months. One day, I noticed the bottom leaves of one of them turning yellow, by the time I figured out what was wrong the whole plant was fading to yellow, this was only a matter of a couple days. It was rotted and dead about 5 days later. By the time I realized my plant had rotted it was too late. The other two never had any leaves fade, but this one was hit hard. I figured out then that these plants can do great in a lot of water, until they don't. I would still caution you to let the ping dry out just a bit between waterings. When rot hits, it hits hard and swift. I hope you never deal with rot, but a plant in water all the time is subject to it. Also, my pings just seem happier and flower more often when I let them dry out between waterings. Good luck!

Your channel is awesome, it's been a huge help in caring for my venus flytraps and an amazing knowledge base. I'm looking to grab a pitcher plant and a sundew, do you have any suggestions for which varieties of those two plants would grow well outdoors in Southwest Florida? (the flytraps seem to love the outside heat and sun with tons of new growth, and I'm going to put them in a mini fridge come winter)
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
Most pitcher plants and sundews do not require a dormancy, which can be the tricky part of having carnivorous plants in Forida. I'd say you can pick almost whichever kind you really want and they should thrive down there. Neps really like some extra humidity. The sundews will need some extra sun but most neps don't need a lot of direct sun. Thank you so much for your kind words. Comments like this are so motivating for me!

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub From what I have read, they are from South Africa but in decline in their native habitats. They grow in a similar manner to Darlingtonia with the cool roots, but their roots need aeration. So, I'm going with long fibered sphagnum moss with perlite and orchid bark in a white pot. It's actually the only species which I'm aware of that doesn't mind fertilizers in the soil albeit highly diluted unlike other species. Tricky to grow from seed because they wind up starving to death. Mine will be bigger so I'll be taking some root cuttings in case I lose my first one I'll have some backups.

Can I pot pitchers sundews and flytraps together???
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
Nope! Actually, all three require fairly different watering and winter periods. Flytraps need a cold dormancy, so they can't be with either of those. Sundews love sitting in water all the time and nepentheas do not. They want to dry out a bit before watering again. I'd probably avoid planting any of these together.

Do nepenthes need good drainage in their pots if they're being top watered? Also, what humidity level do they need? It's pretty dry where I am so do they need to be misted at all?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
Yes, they do not like sitting in water, good drainage is a must. Top watwr until you see water draining out the bottom holes. You can mist but that's been proven to not help a lot with humidity. Try to place above a kitchen or bathroom window for extra humidity. Many nepenthes need excess humidity but ventrata can grow pretty well with low to moderate hunidity.

Keep sundew definitely not for beginners. It's dyind without any reason, even watered by less then 10ppm water. Neither fungicide helps to stop rot on drosera. The dionea or pinguicula, are more or less capable to survive at beginners bands.
