I tried SO many times to grow flytraps, but always"protected" inside. This year I put one on my back deck in full sun, a WOW, what a difference! I'm going to buy 4-5 more . and some sphagnum and perlite. VERY informative video...THANK YOU! SUBBED!

The basic issue is new growers tend to try and “baby” their new VFT, when they are actually incredibly hardy. Just make sure they’re ALWAYS moist in spring and summer, give them as much full sun as you can, and at the start of spring give them a spray of imidaclorprid to prevent aphid infestations. That’s all I do and I’ve had the same pot of batch VFTs for over a decade, have to throw out a handful of bulbs every spring though.

@@superiordelivery4256 Any brand will work so long as its sole active ingredient is imidacloprid:) I’ve used a few brands over the years, they’re all equally effective. Just go by the directions on the label for any other ornamental plant (normally the directions will just say spray until the leaves are saturated).

I love "Your flytrap doesn't care what you think." 😆 I have also made all of these mistakes. I did eventually find out that they prefer to be outdoors, and I usually water everything with rainwater, but I didn't know about their sunlight needs, or anything else. I might finally be able to keep a baby flytrap alive. What I'd like to know, though, is why growers don't ever include this information on the plants they send to nurseries. It looks like they really don't care if all of those plants die, so you have to go out and buy a new one every year. How irresponsible. 😠

Thank you for watching! Yes, this is why we produce these videos. There are lots of myths that still circulate, such as flytraps being tropical plants and require constant high humidity. Hopefully you will give these plants another try with your new knowledge.

If you do feed your flytrap, another important thing to remember is not to give it a bug that's too big. The insect shouldn't be bigger than about 2/5 of the trap, or less than 1/2, just over 1/3 really. If the bug is too big, it's prone to rot and kill the trap before its fully digested.

Sometimes, they catch things they shouldn’t. Several weeks ago, one of mine caught a slug. About a third of the slug remained outside the trap. Yes, the trap died, but the plant is fine. A particularly large trap snagged a bald-faced hornet. I watched as it chewed its way out. That happens commonly with Sarracenias.

I have had a Venus Flytrap since 1970 which has proliferated. I live in northern Germany, which has a different climate than Wilmington. I water them with osmosis water and use white peat or Leucobryum glaucum as substrate. She is still alive today. Due to the many offshoots, I was able to experiment with their hibernation. I can't hibernate her outside because she freezes to death because of the very wet winters and has a lot of stress from the changing temperatures. Severe frosts and thaws alternate constantly. It also does not survive a period of rest in a frost-free cellar. Consequently, I cultivate them at 20° to 25°C. It forms very wide leaf blades in winter to capture more light. With a rest period, it recovers very poorly in the spring, since the winters are very long here. This leads to the death of the plant. Without a rest period with artificial lighting, I have very good results! Since I mixed the white peat with quartz sand, mineral salts are slowly released into the substrate. This increases the conductance to approx. 200 micro Siemens, so that the mineral salts occasionally have to be rinsed out with osmosis water. The plants are still very vigorous for me, even if the cultivation conditions are different according to the circumstances. There is very little sunshine in northern Germany, so the plant is kept outdoors from mid-May to October.

Another way to hibernate is to put them in the refridgerator. When I lived in Michigan, I would dig mine out of their pots each fall,, gently wash of the soil in rain water bucket I had, then placed each variety in a ziplock plastic baggie labeled with the variety name and I would put it in a box or put it in one of the refridgerator compartments in the spare refridgerator in our garage. I had about 12 bags of traps, there were quite a few, and they were full. I did this for a number of years. I live in a hot and humid climate now, further south than N & S Carolina.. where they come from. in Central Florida. I keep them outdoors year round and dont have to worry about them other than repotting them every 2 years.

I bought them at a lowes depot and would water them with tap water, not knowing that they thrive on distilled water. No wonder my Flytraps never lasted that long. I can speak to its presence in South Georgia 40 years ago. I've seen multiple specimens growing in planted pine forests as far south as 5 miles north of the Florida state line. The specific areas where I've seen them were near swampy areas or fresh water bogs. Where the natural soil is high in peat and sand. There's very little clay, and the topsoil is pretty thin, so when you wander near old swamps, the topsoil is replaced with peat, with the sand substrate.

I´ve never managed to keep those plants alive.....now I know why. The sunlight......I always had them in my dark flat and it´s a shame that they sell them as indoor plants here. Like WCiossek writes in this comment section, it is possible to keep this species alive even here in Germany, but it´s a complicated thing. I won´t try it again. We should always inform, what a plant or an animal needs, before we take it under our custody and ask ourselves, if we can provide it. This are living creatures.

I'm in Phoenix and mine are outside and doing great. They survived their first winter and never went completely dormant. There getting lots of new trap now. They don't get full sun all day though, but maybe 15-20 minutes of direct morning sun. They're on a South covered patio where the morning sun slowly sweeps the patio. We'll see how they fair with our summers.

Those all look very healthy. I had one for four years in my Dad's unheated greenhouse when I was about 15. That was after three which died in the previous three years. I dug the last one up and it had rotted. The label always say keep it in a tray of water, after the last three I didn't and it lasted four years. Watered them with rainwater. I think the problem here is the soil which remains waterlogged, it seems to be peat with no drainage. They are all sold in this. I re-potted mine last year to put it up higher in another pot but it got attacked by two maggots eating the leaves and it died.

@@SarraceniaNorthwest Thanks for the reply. I took a look at your site, very interesting and informative. Your climate is very similar to middle England, possibly a little warmer in the Summer. Don't they love the Sun? I take mine out if the Sun comes out and you can also see them growing. I need to figure out a way of keeping them watered when on holiday in the Summer, I'm thinking of a chicken feed type thing to maintain a water level and leave them outside. I also have a sundew and a pitcher. The wife brought them home. The sundew has gone crazy although the pitcher still looks a little sad. I expect they were ones the shops were getting rid of at end of season. But, it is like re homing a pet and giving them a chance :-) and some get really happy and excited to be loved! I'm not really a gardener, but I got into air plants. A mate has small beech offcuts and I turn them into little pots and glue a magnet on them. Now they are fridge magnets and the entire side of the fridge is an air plant garden with about 25 of them. But the info you give is so helpful, so sensible and helps us make these little one thrive. Thanks.

Of all the videos on VFTs on KZbin, this is the best. Ive never seen them under snow. Frozen. Coming back in the spring. I thought i knew something, my mind is blown. As a resident of the Pacific Northwest... i might just plant them outside. But... its hard to believe. Can they survive several weeks sub freezing? If you say you live in Wash St., and have them outdoors year round... 1st, I'd be like WTF, secondly, I might start planting the clones outdoors. But im still skeptical. This is not their region. Can they really survive, outdoors, in the Pacific Northwest? Oregon specifically?

Glad i caught this vid. Where i am in rural se Minnesota our tap water is SUPER hard. Like wo a filter of some kind, your pipes will end up half blocked with mineral deposits. We use a zero water filter for drinking. Saving up for a 3 tank filtration system that hooks up to the water tap that comes into the house. But i water all my plants without filtering. So I would kill them so fast.

I had a flytrap once years ago before I knew anything about gardening or plants in general. I used tap water and it died. It refused to eat- not closing when flies landed on the hairs. I never use tap water on any of my plants nowadays. I collect rain water and when I run out of that, I buy distilled water. It's really cheap, so it's not a big deal. Then I use the empty water jugs to make clothes for winter sowing of seeds. I love this video! Subscribed!

One more question. Just curious. If the plants are outside, catching their own fertilizer, do they "turn off " their pheromones when they've caught enough? Or do all the traps catch what they want?

Thanks for watching! It's best to start with a healthy Venus flytrap. Sometimes the ones at the hardware store have been in very poor conditions for a long time, and they plants are weak to start with. You may have some initial difficulties with these sort of plants. It's best to purchase one from a reputable carnivorous plant nursery.

I live in Wilmington where these plants grow naturally. Not allowed to pick them so I bought two plants, put them in a north window - yes north as in zero sun - and they both grew and were very hardy. I put them outside for the winter and will see about putting them in full sun when things warm up. BTW, we get virtually no snow here. I twenty years we've had enough snow to barely cover the ground maybe three or four times.

Nice video. I would possibly have added two more bits of information. Firstly if you feed your plant bugs they must be alive. VFTs are smart and if they don't detect movement for a period after closure they will reject the fly assuming it's debris and inedible. This will waste one activation of the leaf, these being limited due to the biology of how it closes, so you effectively deny it a future meal. You can gently squeeze the closed leaf for a while after but it's time and effort. Secondly your explanation of the build up of energy in the summer would have been good to include the fact that the VFT is a bulb under the soul, i.e. a tight ball of swelled leaves just like a daffodil, crocus or even an onion.That is where the energy store is and what it comes back from. Showing people that would have highlighted the point you were making and maybe make it easier to understand as most people sort of get the idea of a bulb in normal plants. I often sell spare VFTs at markets and so many times hear that "I used to have one but I died" and when going through these exact same points I could rapidly diagnose what they did to kill it. People just don't understand and think they are difficult but the real issue is garden centres not explaining this plant needs adequately which is a shame.

very well done. I am outdoor grower in VFT's native north carolina. I was concerned about the plant medium (peat moss & perlite) freezing in the pot and killing the plant during dormancy. If that 2013 plant can freeze and make it through PNW winter, I feel confident my plants will do well here.

i think i may of just killed my seeds for my vary first fly trap i just potted it in garden soil and used the wrong water thanks for this grate video ill try again using this advice

Seeds are a difficult way to start. It depends on how fresh the seeds are. They are viable only for a few months, unrefrigerated. But, regular garden soil will do them in, too! Start with a live plant instead. From seed to a plant of flowering maturity can take up to 3 years, depending on your climate.
