I've worked on electronics for about 35 years and we all have to learn somewhere. You don't look stupid at all. It is very cool that you take the time and try to analyze how the thing works and not just going in there like you know it all. As far as you getting it for free, that's awesome for the aggravation that you went through making this work. About 3 1/2 years ago I bid on a Tascam MSR 16, 16 track reel to reel. In the description it was for parts/not working. When it arrived, it took everything I have to get it up two flights of stairs because I'm not that young anymore. I ended up getting it for under $300.00. I bid on it because something like that doesn't come up every day. It was said to not go into play mode. It looked like the machine had been dropped. When I tried it out, it absolutely didn't work. However, I took the front panel with all of the pushbuttons and because it got crunched, there were several buttons being pushed simultaneously. When I separated the board from the chassis, it worked. However, my one friend has a Tascam 40-4 and it had a bad pinch roller. Sure enough immediately after winning the bid, I immediately ordered a pinch roller tire. The part that they said was broken didn't cost me anything. I actually took that bent piece at the music store that I worked at in the 1980s that I did electronic repairs at because they also fixed band instruments and I took it to the owner and he looked at it. He put it in the vise and gave it a whack in a position that I would have never thought of and straightened it enough to get the board in with just one whack (Thanks Dan) and he didn't charge me anything. After pulling the gummy pinch roller off, cleaning the metal shaft and gluing the new one on, it works perfectly and sounds beautiful. All channels work and the heads are pristine. Just keep doing what you're doing and people will flock to you for advice and repairs. Great video.

@@travisraab I think your backstory is cool in a sense that you're rescuing this vintage equipment that may seem like it needs a lot, but it really doesn't. FYI I published some music using this machine as well. You can look it up if you wish but there are about seven or eight songs out there on my topic page and I did a video on my regular page testing the machine out and recorded a very sloppy version of Very Last Day by Peter Paul and Mary. I played the guitar, bass, and sang all of the parts. Have a great day and Merry Christmas.

Dude! I still have mine. I bought it in 1984, and it STILL WORKS! Also, way back then, I taped down one of the reflective strips in front of the 4-track mode sensor, just as you've done, and that's still in place. Probably most everybody who bought one of these did that. 🤓 I have pulled several EPs worth of multis of my four-decades-old original material into the Mac from this machine. And even though the tracks were recorded at a glacial 1 7/8 ips (the only option on this deck), I've been able to get them to sound pretty good with some judicious use of plugins in my DAW. I originally had the mixer as well, but I sold it when I found a used TASCAM Model 3 board a couple years later. Belated thanks for posting this!

Your story is funny for me Travis. My first 4 track K7 was the MT44. I have discovered multitrack recording with it. That was back in the 1980s ( I was 21 ). Then came my Atari with PRO24, my first computarised midi sequencer in 1982 ... then I bought a Tascam 388 that was gonna be my main multitrack recorder for decades with my Atari and Cubase. I did not changed these in my home studio until 2010 where I put my hands on Ableton Live on a Macmini ... I sold my 388 ( with regrets ... ) but I am so well today with Ableton Live ;-)

@@travisraab Yamaha MT-44D is a slightly different thing. This is a 4 track cassette with 6 track mixer. I want to buy one for myself in a couple of months... Artist name and album - Viktor Tsoi, Blood Type. This is probably the main figure of Russian rock of the last century (and even now). Moreover, the guys mixed it all by recording directly into the MT-44D, and then only processed it with an equalizer and a cheap reverb. And it sounds like a mix... The master was on a modernized reel-to-reel Soviet recorder. Crazy thing. There are hundreds of plugins people use right now, but they don't come close to that sound. Having learned this story, I decided that I would write all the music on analogue. I don't have any money yet, but I hope to be able to buy this cassette in a couple of months.

My buddy and I together owned this system (without the patch bay) in 1984. He had the recorder and I had the mixer so we joined forces. Surprised to hear the MT44 sounds the best, if only because it only runs at 1-7/8 with no option to double it. That bucket brigade delay gets pretty tiring when it's your only option. A good reverb would have been more useful. The whole sticker mechanism was odd. Why not just a switch? We had a lot of fun with it and lots of frustration listening to the sound degrade once you ping-ponged your original tracks, since 4 is never enough. Love the video. Been loving yr channel. I still have my mixer and even have used it to pre-amp and distort tracks. The MT44 needs some TLC as some wires are definitely no longer connected. Cheers!

Sorry but I had it and the mt44d and both ended up in the trash.. Best sounding one is Marantz pmd740 by far. 2nd best is Fostex 380S or Model 250 and 280 From yamaha there's MT3x and MT4x. Tascam has the 424 and the 424mkiii These are simply awsome machines.

I can't even listen to my music unless it has been conditioned with analog tape and analog compressors! 4 track cassette or 8 track reel to reel, I don't care!!
