The commercial with Nicole Kidman and Rodrigo Santoro, I think, is a true piece of art for itself (including the music of Claude Debussy), as I remember watching it back then, it was really something very special, extraordinary, beautiful and sophisticated. Loved it so much

Marion Cotillard is my favorite; I think probably because of La Vie En Rose. She seems so quintessentially French to me. Estella Warren is the first one I remember seeing in magazines with that mermaid-like dress. Nicole of course is classic glamour. I’m surprised Vanessa Paradis isn’t one of the No 5 reps. She was the face of the original Rouge Coco line and I think one of Karl’s favs. 🤍🖤

Anna Wintour just talked a bit about Nicole Kidman, Lagerfeld and Chanel No5 in the Vogue channel. Apparently the way they went about these commmercials were as if they were filming a big budget film.

Hey, Allie :) I was looking forward to my commute to watch this video and it made time fly! Thank you for this topic, very creative! Before clicking on this video at least 4 faces popped up in my head, including Marion's, but slowly I realized those faces weren't for No5, they were the beauty/makeup models!! So from No5, I'm exactly your age, so I only remember Nicole Kidman, Lily-Rose and I do find her campaign captivating but it is like white noise next to Marion. Im biased about her, I love the characters she played and her eyes have a slight resemblance to mine (the heavy lower lid), her jawline is like my mother's etc... So she is and always will be my ultimate favourite since I feel like Im represented :') Thus said, the Pitt commercial is just wrong from every possible perspective. To mention a good men's commercial from Chanel is their white Asian male models using makeup. Even that is weak, but at least it isn't a laughing stock and it does have the Chanel splurge vibe not like Pitt's mortuary blackandwhite. Hope you had a great weekend! xx

🤍🖤 Hi Ali, great video, I enjoyed it very much. My favourite face of Chanel no5 was Nicole Kidman. I loved tne little story of the advert, and she is so beautiful. I was a teenager in the 60's so I remember Jean Shrimpton, I don't remember the adverts though. Probably I was more focused on shopping for clothes at Biba or using Mary Quant make up. I love a lot of men's fragrances, a favourite is Bleu by Chanel. A lot of womens fragrances are too sweet IMO. But if a man wants to wear a woman's fragrance well go right ahead.

@@deborahmorse8435 @Allison Chase I just went poking about to see if there are photos and I have a suggestion for Ali. - it seems there was soe sort of revival of Biba makeup recently which I have not explored BUT there's some amazing youtube resources including a news profile of Biba's founder and her store kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoHVlXh6r62Vo5o and Lisa Eldridge collects Biba original pieces and did a demo! There sees to be a bunch more ... I can imagine a great history episode with these and maybe quant if there's similar info and possible the early Betsy. Johnson boutique fashion before she became ... whatever she is now. I owned two amazing Johnson outfits - a navy corduroy pantsuit with tight peplum jacket and the widest bellbottoms imaginable and an amazing red dress with bird prints. sigh. So an idea ... I love the history series so much!

I love your Beauty History series. And this episode is fascinating, thanks! Have you considered doing a retrospective of DIOR beauty commercials? They have certainly had some of the most iconic campaigns. I still remember Monica Bellucci as a model for their Serum Lipstick (and I still consider it one of the best lip products that were ever created 😁)

I’m weirded out by the Marilyn ads too and for the same reason. Have you tried Chanel No. 5 les eau. I think that’s what it’s called. It’s a modern version of no. 5. It’s supposed to be lighter but I find it cloying on me after a couple of hours. I love how it smells from the bottle though. I love this addition to the beauty history series. 😊

Great video! Thanks for compiling this! I notice that Chanel fluctuates with showing a mature woman to showing a very gamine, young woman to represent number 5. In my opinion, a more mature spokesperson works better for this scent.

Carole Bouquet has been famous since the 80s and done many famous films. She was also one of the Bond Girls which helped propel her career. Her signature blue eyes has always distinguished her as well as her very French style. J’adore.

McGrath’s an actress and her power movie in the 60s was a rendering of a book by an author name. Eric Siegel called love story and it was like a pandemic. It created a pandemic among young people. It’s an interesting movie to watch on that street skyrocket it into fame at that time I noticed you didn’t maybe you will attend but this will be my only comment Marilyn Monroe was doing an interview. I know you probably know who Marilyn Monroe is the it girl from the 50s coming into the 60s blonde bombshell and she was ask what she wore to bed and she said only Chanel number five and sales went through the roof. That’s a true story.

If you know the history of Maryland when you’re from another country and from another time when I was a little girl in the 50s, but she was so lovely and she did not have good relationships with men. She was so desired by men because of how she looked in a presentation of herself, and she was a very artful, gentle person. You can feel it in the interviews and what not that she did as well if you ever watch some footage of her, I know you’ll pick it up. People are still fascinated by Maryland. They’re fascinated by her and how she lived and the way her presence among us and did and yet she holds that power to still in gender and peoples minds and hearts the beauty that she. She has a place in the marketplace. I think it should be tasteful the weather it’s done, and yet we live in a time when people mini advertising campaigns are not very tasteful, but if you study Maryland and know the kind of thing she went through the kind of person that she really was. You may alter your opinion.

Wonderful wander through the years ... for me Deneuve will always be the Chanel woman -- iconic, goddess, so intelligent, so definition of chic. Funny to hear your Ali McGraw comments since I was a hippy back then - high school years. We did not see her as one of us-- she starred in Love Story and we did not approve - rather cloyingly sappy with famous lines we all heard too much (Love is never having to say you're sorry.) and we thought of her rather too clean-cut and collegiate. Looking back I realize her nudity was rather shocking (the New York Times was still censoring the word "s-x" (printed like that!) Of them all - and so any are so beautiful, Jean Shrimpton owns my heart -- something about her look and energy just is the most strikingly beautiful to me. ❤❤❤❤❤

Ali McGraw is an American actress - so perfect for that era of advertising Chanel as well! I've never been a fan on No.5 - sadly. You kind of feel like you should like it because it's such a classic, but I never managed to convince myself that it was my thing. Maybe now I'm getting older I will change my mind? 😂 My favourite face of No. 5 must be Audrey Tautou - she's quintessentially French, just like Chanel 🖤 I also loved Gisele - a modern take on Chanel. Never thought I'd see trainers and Chanel in one advert 🤣Least favourite? Brad. I'm happy for them to use a man to advertise the perfume, but his advert made zero sense and instead of making me intrigued or tempted to buy it, it was just confusing.

Carol Bouquet is my number one. She was my idol growing up. She looked so elegant, so calm and everything teen me wanted to be. I wasn't a fan of Nicole Kidman. She came across too stiff. Nicole looks her best in boho, shoe free photo spreads.

My favourites, hands down, are the classic French icons - Catherine Denevue as the unbeaten No. 1, followed by Carole Buquet. Brad Pitt - yeah, that was weird.. The only thing that comes to mind are the parodies themed Kennel No. 5 🤭 Wasn't a fan of Gisele as the face of Chanel No. 5 - in my opinion, Gisele as an athletic Amazone doesn't really fit the image of Chanel No. 5.

I’m 60 year old African-American and would save my allowance to buy fashion magazines back in the 70’s-80’s. I would rummage through the pages and get inspired by the images. It would be an especially proud moment when I saw someone who looked like me. Saddens me that Brad Pitt (as gorgeous as he is) was chosen as a spokesperson for Chanel before any woman of color.

I thought Brad's was weird at the time!!! Not because he's a man, but bc he was way too scruffy, casual, and serious to be promoting an elegant, classy, splurgey item! Also thought Ali MacGraw (actress/Love Story) was a weird choice, as she seemed rather like the antithesis of Chanel and No. 5; very natural, low maintenance, like she would smell like patchouli if anything! I remember the campaign with Nicole Kidman. I really dislike her and think she is an average actress. The 3 min long commercial was ridiculous. My favourite muses were Coco, Catherine Deneve, the Canadian swimmer and the last few models/actresses from 2010 onwards EXCEPT the actress from Twilight. I dislike her aesthetic, very masculine. Doesn’t fit Chanel look at all (in my opinion).Brad Pitt!!! Hahaha. I agree with you about Marilyn, very sad.
